So if Trump (or an actual conservative) nominates conservative judges, and the net result is they come to the perfectly reasonable, and arguable, conclusion that the right to privacy as defined in Roe v Wade does not exist, and that ruling is overturned, he is fundamentally at fault? Whom should Trump nominate? Judges opposed to his own view? Judges that will not only uphold Roe, but overturn Heller? One of the more amusing bits of fallout from last week’s election has been the safe-space response of many colleges and universities to the election of the “wrong” candidate. But on closer examination, this response isn’t really amusing. In fact, it’s downright mean.
Trump’s substantial victory, when most progressives expected a Hillary landslide, came as a shock to many. That shock seems to have been multiplied in academe, where few people seem to know any Trump supporters — or, at least, any Trump supporters who’ll admit to it.


The response to the shock has been to turn campuses into kindergarten. The Rev. Kelsey Hutto said she learned about the graffiti from an organist, who had arrived at St. David’s Episcopal Church on Sunday morning.

“And so I’m taking comfort in that, and I’m trying to make sure that my congregation takes comfort in that as well,” Hutto said. “There were conversations about trying to cover everything up, but in the end, we decided that we’re proud.

“We’re proud of being targeted for the reason that we were targeted for, at least in which we think we were targeted for, which is being inclusive.”

So, St. David’s Episcopal Church has decided to keep the vandalism in place.

The spray paint that appeared the first weekend after Donald Trump’s win will stay on the church’s exterior walls at least until the end of November, Hutto said.

The 400 laws set to be debated by legislators next year include regulations that would force anyone casting a ballot in Texas to provide valid identification at the voting booth, a proposal to ban sanctuary cities in the state, and a pair of bills that would bring the battle over trans bathroom use to the Lone Star State.

There’s also legislation that, if enacted, would effectively out LGBT students to their families.

Many of these bills, facing retaliation from the business community, were tabled or voted down. Those that passed faced sustained and organized resistance.

Matthew Pugh, 27, of Donora Towers, 685 Meldon Ave., was arrested Wednesday on a warrant obtained by Donora police on charges of attempted homicide, aggravated assault, simple assault and reckless endangerment.

N.C. man told police he went to D.C. pizzeria with gun to investigate conspiracy theory

A North Carolina man was arrested Sunday after he walked into a popular pizza restaurant in Northwest Washington carrying an assault rifle and fired one or more shots, D.C. police said. The man told police he had come to the restaurant to “self-investigate” a false election-related conspiracy theory involving Hillary Clinton that spread online during her presidential campaign.

The incident caused panic, with several businesses going into lockdown as police swarmed the neighborhood after receiving the call shortly before 3 p.m.

Police said 28-year-old Edgar Maddison Welch, of Salisbury, N.C., walked in the front door of Comet Ping Pong and pointed a firearm in the direction of a restaurant employee. The employee was able to flee and notify police. Police said Welch proceeded to discharge the rifle inside the restaurant; they think that all other occupants had fled when Welch began shooting.

Welch has been charged with assault with a dangerous weapon. Police said there were no reported injuries.

Interim D.C. Police Chief Peter Newsham said police arrived on the scene minutes after the first call, set up a perimeter and safely arrested Welch about 45 minutes after he entered the restaurant.

A D.C. police report made public Monday says Welch had been armed with an AR-15 assault-style rifle. The report also says police seized a Colt .38 caliber handgun and a shotgun. One of those weapons was found inside the restaurant; the other in the suspect’s car. Police did not specify the locations.

The police report also describes Welch’s arrest. Police said he surrendered shortly after officers surrounded the pizza shop and emerged with his hands raised above his head.

The report says in addition to the weapons, police seized a folding knife, a T-shirt, a hooded sweatshirt and denim blue jeans.

Vivek Jain, of Potomac, Md., was eating lunch inside Banana Leaf, a nearby Indian restaurant, when Comet patrons came rushing inside. He said Banana Leaf was locked down for about 90 minutes.
