Can confirm @MLB All-Star Game will no longer determine World Series home-field advantage, as @AP reported. @MLBNetwork

Too bad. It made the game competitive unlike the scrimmages we see at the Pro Bowl and NBA's All-Star Weekend.

And
This. Besides, it's better than using an arcade-style game instead of OT in poorball games.

So the home advantage will now be determined by the average weight of each squad?

HFA in the World Series should be based on seeding and record. In other words, if you have two 1-seeds, whoever has the better record gets it. If you have a 1 or a 2, regardless of records, the 1 gets it.
That's not perfect but better than the ASG determining it.

Totally agree. Can come down to ASG or record if same seed makes WS from both leagues, but this is fairest way considering only like 10% of schedule is played out of league and if one league is a lot stronger, puts their teams at huge disadvantage. NBA is about 37% inter-conf for reference.

MLB :tu
I would actually like to see the NBA adopt this.
The West has been the notoriously stronger conference for over a decade. Spurs/Warriors/Clippers/Thunder (with Durant) all had to play each other 3 to 4 times each, while Miami/Cleveland would beat up on 38 win "playoff" teams and the like.
Furthermore, home field doesn't really matter in playoff baseball. Even with the designated hitter rule change.

They need to abolish the leagues altogether or at least make them less relevant. They used to actually be separate leagues no different than conferences in college sports but it's all under the same umbrella of Major League Baseball now and has been for many decades now, where their minor league players compete and interact with one another, same umpires, no more legit league presidents, etc... The only reason the leagues exist is tradition and that silly little DH rule. If they ever get rid of the DH or in turn make a full MLB rule, then they need to just go to Western and Eastern conferences. Most of the historic rivalries would be preserved and some would be enhanced, such as White Sox-Cubs.

It was horrible, but Selig's dumbest idea was not going after steroid use in the late 90s - early 00s. Now the most hallowed stats like 755 and 61 are gone and replaced by blatant cheaters who will never get in the HOF. Second would be him not doing anything about games becoming so long. I can't believe Selig took baseball from the most popular American sport that young people loved to something that draws mostly old people now.

This rule was the real difference in this year's WS. The Cubs likely lose with HFA this year, tbh.

Steroids made Bud a lot of money and got people excited about the sport again after the lockout. Great business decision by Bud, tbh.
I don't think you can blame Bud or anyone else associated with baseball for getting surpassed by football. The reality is, the NFL just made a ton of smart business decisions starting all the way back in the 1930s to get to the top, from moving out of tiny Midwestern towns and into big cities, to merging with other fledgling pro football leagues, to creating the amateur draft, to getting every game on television, etc., etc.

I thought it was a lousy business decision in the long term. Baseball was the one sport where people really cared about records and now no one does. The history of the game used to seem like such a big draw. It's not now with it essentially being purged since the great steroid era players like Bonds, McGwire, Clemens won't get in the HOF.

Can you explain to me why the hell the MLB does that? Why have 1/2 the league play under two different rules.
Imagine if in the NBA the Western Conference was allowed basket interference (kinda like they do in European Leagues) and the Eastern Conference wasn't allowed it. Depending on which court you were playing the rule would be allowed/disallowed. That may not be a good comparison...just the first thing that popped in the ole noggin.
I think the MLB should get together and pick a side. Either every team plays with a DH or no team plays with it. Your thoughts?

Look at the enormous local TV deals that franchises have been signing in the last few years. The league as a whole has enjoyed 13 straight years of revenue growth. They aren't making NFL money, but they aren't that far behind. They're still comfortably ahead of the NBA, NHL, and every floptrot league in the world:

This has mostly happened in the aftermath of the steroid scandal, btw. Old Avante-esque faggots in the media whine about steroids and records, but it hasn't hurt the MLB's bottom line at all.

The AL had lower attendance than the NL in the '70s, so the AL owners banded together and adopted the rule in an attempt to boost scoring and put butts in seats. The NL never felt the need to follow suit, and the difference has stayed in place out of tradition.
I've always hated the DH anyway, it removes a lot of strategy from the game and encourages a less fun style of play. I greatly prefer NL-style smallball over AL "swing for the fences" ball. But the players' union will never allow the MLB to scrap the DH entirely, so the way it is now is a decent compromise.

The American and National leagues are literally two different leagues, much like the ABA and NBA were or the AFL and NFL were. Yes, they now both fall under the MLB umbrella, but they are ostensibly considered different leagues from a fan and historical perspective. Historically, the World Series is like the first few Super Bowls. The best teams from the top two professional baseball leagues in the US battle it out for supremacy. This is why purists are against interleague play, as well.
They should get rid of the DH rule primarily because it's shit.
