Nate Silver: Clinton Would’ve ‘Almost Certainly’ Become President If Not for Comey’s Letter

Comey had a large, measurable impact on the race. Harder to say with Russia/Wikileaks because it was drip-drip-drip.

There's more evidence, too: Late-deciding voters broke strongly against Clinton in swing states, enough to cost her MI/WI/PA.

Conservative CNN contributor and senior editor at The Atlantic David Frum reminded Trump and his supporters that actually, in spite of their claims to have a mandate,
the people "didn't speak" because "Donald Trump won 0.35 points more of the popular vote than Michael Dukakis in 1988."

[[["Dr. Stein has repeatedly stated that she has sought a Pennsylvania recount to ensure that every vote counts," Diamond wrote. "Granting her later than last-minute request for relief, however, could well ensure that no Pennsylvania vote counts. Such a result would be both outrageous and completely unnecessary; as I have found, suspicion of a 'hacked' Pennsylvania election borders on the irrational."]]]

It's hard to argue that the Republicans don't have a mandate when the Democrats now hold their fewest seats in political office since Reconstruction. The Dems got totally wiped out all over the map. Even in diehard blue states, "progressive" ballot items like carbon taxes and single-payer healthcare failed miserably.

Exactly. The "Soros" of the world. But, of course Media never called her on it. Nary a peep. They/"You" just waited. There was no need to track it thru CNN/MSNBC. The end was assured, only the matter was in doubt. So, Media backed away so as not to get hit with the shit when it failed. If it succeeded they'd a swooped in like locust and busted "our" hump & "our" Trump.
Not a word tonite on CNN as to the 571 votes picked up by Trump in Wisconsin. No, there just working this Russia business non fucking stop. And it's the same here as it was with the Stein business. The end game this time? Finding a link twixt Trump & Putin. They won't say that aloud because if it doesn't work out they're sitting there with their dick in their hand. But, make no mistake, this launched quest is for Trump's collusion with Russia in order to gain the POTUS. If they can establish that link then it's [Watergate] all over again.

No I wouldn't, because unlike the left, I understand how the electoral system works in this country.
The Dems have had the state with the most electoral votes (California) on lock for decades since Reagan's amnesty betrayal, and they've had the state with the third-most electoral votes (New York) on lock forever. Burqa Bou's ignorance is the textbook example of why we should have never stopped teaching civics in this country. There's a reason why Senate seats are apportioned the way they are. The Senate has always been intended to serve as the voice of the states, providing a necessary check and balance to the voice of the people through the House. That's why Senate seats are distributed evenly among the states while House seats are distributed by population.

The states lost. They lost the civil war. They lost with the 14th amendment. They lost with the new deal. They lost with the civil rights-era cases that expanded the commerce clause. To think that we're still a republic the way we were in the 1780s is lunacy.
And that says nothing about the profoundly disenfranching effect the Electoral college has.

doing away with the anti-proportional Senate's extreme imbalance of power favoring rural states is a great idea. CA Senator represents 19M people, rural state Senator represents a few 100K.
the problem is that USA is totally constipated and incapable of change, primarily because the VRWC (white males) has abused govt and defends its abuse by buying judges and politicians.

Eh, not with respect to the senate or the electoral college. Those institutions exist to give the states -- not the people -- a more direct voice in governance. I don't think it meant anything about being more diligent in policy making. Bicameralism for America meant the states and the people having equal say in governance. After 200 years of some pretty profound changes in government, law, and society, I don't see a point in giving the states a seat at the table.

It's Official: Clinton's Popular Vote Win Came Entirely From California
Democrats who are having trouble getting out of the first stage of grief — denial — aren't being helped by the fact that, now that all the votes are counted, Hillary Clinton's lead in the popular vote has topped 2.8 million, giving her a 48% share of the vote compared with Trumps 46%.
To those unschooled in how the United States selects presidents, this seems totally unfair. But look more closely at the numbers and you see that Clinton's advantage all but disappears.
As we noted in this space earlier (http://www.investors.com/politics/commentary/outside-california-clinton-is-a-big-time-popular-vote-loser/), while Clinton's overall margin looks large and impressive, it is due to Clinton's huge margin of victory in one state — California — where she got a whopping 4.3 million more votes than Trump.
California is the only state, in fact, where Clinton's margin of victory was bigger than President Obama's in 2012 — 61.5% vs. Obama's 60%.
But California is the exception that proves the true genius of the Electoral College — which was designed to prevent regional candidates from dominating national elections.
In recent years, California has been turning into what amounts to a one-party state. Between 2008 and 2016, the number of Californian's who registered as Democrats climbed by 1.1 million, while the number of registered Republicans dropped by almost 400,000.
What's more, many Republicans in the state had nobody to vote for in November.
There were two Democrats — and zero Republicans — running to replace Sen. Barbara Boxer. There were no Republicans on the ballot for House seats in nine of California's congressional districts.
At the state level, six districts had no Republicans running for the state senate, and 16 districts had no Republicans running for state assembly seats.
Plus, since Republicans knew Clinton was going to win the state — and its entire 55 electoral votes — casting a ballot for Trump was virtually meaningless, since no matter what her margin of victory, Clinton was getting all 55 votes.
Is it any wonder then, that Trump got 11% fewer California votes than John McCain did in 2008? (Clinton got 6% more votes than Obama did eight years ago, but the number of registered Democrats in the state climbed by 13% over those years.)
If you take California out of the popular vote equation, then Trump wins the rest of the country by 1.4 million votes. And if California voted like every other Democratic state — where Clinton averaged 53.5% wins — Clinton and Trump end up in a virtual popular vote tie. (This was not the case in 2012. Obama beat Romney by 2 million votes that year, not counting California.)

"As we noted in this space earlier (http://www.investors.com/politics/commentary/outside-california-clinton-is-a-big-time-popular-vote-loser/), while Clinton's overall margin looks large and impressive, it is due to Clinton's huge margin of victory in one state — California — where she got a whopping 4.3 million more votes than Trump"

You touch on an important point.
400,000 people in wyoming
3 electoral college votes
Value of vote in wyoming:
0.0000075 (3/400000)
Population of California:
38,800,000
Electors
55
Value of a vote in California:
0.00000142
0.0000075/0.00000142=5.290909091
A vote in Wyoming is worth 5.29 times that of a vote in California.
California sucks anyways.

WATCH: Bill O’Reilly channels inner Afrikaner, complains that “the left wants power taken away from the white establishment”
"It sounds like he was defending apartheid" in talking about the "white establishment,"
http://media.salon.com/2016/12/Screen-Shot-2016-12-21-at-8.01.10-AM-620x412.png
“The left sees white privilege in America as an oppressive force that must be done away with,” O’Reilly said, without having any idea what he was actually saying.
Therefore, white working class voters must be marginalized and what better way to do that than center the voting power in the cities.
Very few commentators will tell you that the heart of liberalism in America today is based on race. (REPUGS PARTY OF RACISTS!)
It permeates almost every issue.
That white men have set up a system of oppression.
That system must be destroyed.
Bernie Sanders pedaled that to some extent Hillary Clinton did.
And the liberal media tries to sell that all day long.
So-called white privilege bad. Diversity good.
If you look at the voting patterns, it’s clear that the Democrats are heavily reliant on the minority vote. (KNITTERS!)
Also on the woman vote. (BITCHES ,HOs, pussies-for-grabbing!)
White men have largely abandoned the Democrats and the left believes it’s because of racism that they want to punish minorities, keep them down.
So that’s what’s really going on when you hear about the Electoral College and how unfair it allegedly is. Summing up, the left wants power taken away from the white establishment. They want a profound change in the way America is run. Taking voting power away from the white precincts is the quickest way to do that.
http://www.salon.com/2016/12/21/watch-bill-oreilly-channels-inner-afrikaner-complains-that-the-left-wants-power-taken-away-from-the-white-establishment/
So O'Reilly, "just a commentator", is propagandizing for White Male Nationalist Supremacy.
I would like an answer as to why so many of the nastiest fucking rightwing assholes are Catholics.

What is sad about the Dems is that at a time when they should be introspecting, they're looking to shift blame for their own failures, ensuring that the DNC establishment doesn't actually change. This election wasn't actually a referendum on Trump, it was a referendum on what passes for the modern representatives of the liberal left in America, the Democratic party.
They're blaming the loss on everything, from sexism of Bernie supporters to Russia to fake news to everyone who voted against them being stupid. The left finally got an actual populist that talked about actual real issues like trade deals, stopping monopolies and putting term limits on Congress, and what did the DNC do? They crushed him to continue the failed policies of the liberal establishment.
They have abandoned their core principles. What passes for "liberal" today in America has almost nothing to do with classic liberalism (individual rights, freedom of thought/speech...etc). The great liberal tradition that rejects regressive dogmatic ideologies and which is compassionate to the working class stiffs that build the country is now gone. The left-wing movement in this country, at least going back the last 20 years or so, hasn't really been one of left-wing economics or individualistic free thinking, or using government to improve the lives of the working and middle classes. What's passed for left-wing politics in this country is really just identity politics: promising to give various handouts to some identifiable minority group (blacks, women, illegal immigrants, lgbt...etc).
Democrats, you have completely and utterly lost touch with the common man, whose concerns used to be at the very center of the political left.
Today that electrician stringing up wires of homes in Wisconsin, that welder putting together steel plates in Pennsylvania, that man fixing an elevator in Ohio, the many men across the country with dirt under their nails from working with their hands....these aren't your people anymore.
Instead you are now the party of the gender studies graduate with manicured nails, lecturing others about the evil racist sexist America, telling the struggling white working class that they hold white privilege and therefore hold an eternal debt to all non-white people based purely on the color of their skin.
The DNC is the the party of those who go absolutely nuts when a Christian baker doesn't want to be forced to bake a cake for a gay wedding, yet instantly jumps in to defend insanely backwards ideologies like Islam when yet another Muslim mass murders innocent homosexuals.
It is the party of collusion with media to mislead the public, of corruption and saying nice empty platitudes that have been filtered through 5 focus groups as to not offend anyone while doing the very opposite of these platitudes.
It is the party of Black Lives Matter, the oppression Olympics, of 20 different gender pronouns, virtue signalling and all the noxious ideas like "social justice" that claim that all difference in outcome must be due to some etheral discrimination, and that places the collectivist forced equality of outcome over the rights of an individual.
It is the party of the smug air of moral superiority, of ivory tower attitudes holding contempt and instantly discounting the views of regular people that don't hold a degree studying Critical Theory or the works of Juddith Butler.
And what has this disconnect lead to? The following:
Republicans have won a majority in the House of Representatives, with 238 seats.
Republicans have won the majority in the Senate.
Republicans now hold 33 Governorships, with a gain of three seats on November 8.
Republicans control a record 68 of 98 state legislative chambers.
Republicans now hold more total state legislature seats, well over 4,100 of the 7,383, than they have since 1920
A former reality TV star with no government experience whatsoever won the White House.
President Trump will have one Supreme Court vacancy to fill immediately and could potentially add at least two more justices before his first term is finished.
The GOP now controls all levels of our government, it is the most powerful it has been in over 80 years according to Real Clear Politics and Washington Post.
Come the midterms in 2018, the electorate map looks really good for the GOP and they could easily win enough seats to pass the threshold needed for them to start changing the Constitution completely unopposed.
You could have prevented this. You could have kicked out the out of touch elitists and candidates that can't connect with the average person, you could have listened to the common man instead you treated them like utter garbage, with the insufferable arrogance of guilt tripping and shaming everyone who disagrees with your identity politics nonsense.

How can you say that after this election? The republicans chose Trump over all the conservatives and things are gonna go more his way. I think you might (secretly) like what Trump does - if you can ignore all the "ism"s. He is fiscally conservative (well, compared to the Dems) but socially neutral/left-center (don't think he really cares about govt and social issues). He's probably aghast at what govt is spending see the F-35? (never can remember what number).
"The DNC is the the party of those who go absolutely nuts when a Christian baker doesn't want to be forced to bake a cake for a gay wedding, yet instantly jumps in to defend insanely backwards ideologies like [radical] Islam when yet another Muslim mass murders innocent homosexuals." - addition of radical mine
This is one I always think of when I analyze the flaws of today's democrats. It's way too much identity politics and double standards to ever hold up under objective scrutiny.

goddam, you're stupid.
Trash is a conservative, and extreme conservative in practice who will sign every bill the Congressional ESTABLISHMENT Repugs put on his desk.
Trash's Boeing and F-35 bullshit is pure made-for-TV propaganda. Both programs are huge Corporate Welfare socialism, transferring $Ts from taxpayers to BigCorp.

Do you think that a candidate that lost the popular vote by 3,000,000 votes really has any kind of mandate to carry out his agenda? Should he be obligated somewhat to govern for all Americans and give some leeway to the policy preferences of the majority who voted otherwise?

Except he is right. California is made up of retards and illegals and they set the precedent that enabled a cat like Trump to get elected. Remember that big meathead Rooskie that can't act that was elected by the retarded people of California had no problem electing a Republican Governor. American Sycophancy Ground Zero is right here in Los Angeles. Sycophants are retards and there is a shit load of wetbacks here illegally too.
Just remember when making stuff up, when you want to blame anyone for Trump's rise, blame the great retarded population here in California. The only thing that separated Trump from being Ross Perot 2.0 was American Sycophancy and their addiction to worshiping rich elitists because they are on TV. That is 100% of the reason people listened to him first and then realized he represented actual change from the last 16 years of the same person in office, regardless of how you feel about his proposals. It is indeed change from war mongering criminals who have been in charge this century and before.

At least 50 Donald Trump electors were illegally seated as Electoral College members
More evidence surfaces as calls mount to challenge congressional ratification of Electoral College vote
More than 50 Electoral College members who voted for Donald Trump were ineligible to serve as presidential electors because they did not live in the congressional districts they represented or held elective office in states legally barring dual officeholders.
That stunning finding is among the conclusions of an extensive 1,000-plus page legal briefing (https://my.pcloud.com/publink/show?code=788otalK) prepared by a bipartisan nationwide legal team for members of Congress who are being urged to object to certifying the 2016 Electoral College results on Friday.
“Trump’s ascension to the presidency is completely illegitimate,” said Ryan Clayton of Americans Take Action (http://americanstakeaction.com/), who is promoting the effort. “It’s not just Russians hacking our democracy. It’s not just voter suppression at unprecedented levels. It is also [that] there are Republicans illegally casting ballots in the Electoral College, and in a sufficient number that the results of the Electoral College proceedings are illegitimate as well.”
“Republicans like to talk all the time about people voting illegally,” Clayton continued. “We have a list of a bunch of Republicans that allegedly voted illegally in the Electoral College. Pam Bondi is the attorney general of the state of Florida and the Florida Constitution says that you cannot hold two offices. And she holds the office of Attorney General and she holds the office of federal elector in the Electoral College. That is a violation of the law. That is a violation of the Constitution. And the vote that she cast in this election is illegal.”

Sorry, North Carolina, But You Don’t Really Qualify as a Democracy Anymore
A group of experts that rates the integrity of elections around the world say North Carolina can’t really be considered a democracy anymore. The state where the outgoing governor signed a law stripping his successor of certain powers scored 58/100 in the 2016 election, according to the Electoral Integrity Project, a joint effort between Harvard University and the University of Sydney. That places the state alongside the likes of Cuba, Indonesia and Sierra Leone.

First, legislative power does not depend on the votes of the people. One party wins just half the votes but 100 percent of the power. The GOP has a huge legislative majority giving it absolute veto-proof control with that tiny advantage in the popular vote. The other party wins just a handful of votes less and 0 percent of the legislative power. This is above and beyond the way in which state legislators are detached from democratic accountability as a result of the rigged district boundaries. They are beholden to their party bosses, not the voters. Seventy-six of the 170 (45 percent) incumbent state legislators were not even opposed by the other party in the general election.

Second, democracies do not limit their citizens’ rights on the basis of their born identities. However, this is exactly what the North Carolina legislature did through House Bill 2 (there are an estimated 38,000 transgender Tar Heels), targeted attempts to reduce African-American and Latino access to the vote and pernicious laws to constrain the ability of women to act as autonomous citizens.

Third, government in North Carolina has become arbitrary and detached from popular will. When, in response to losing the governorship, one party uses its legislative dominance to take away significant executive power, it is a direct attack upon the separation of powers that defines American democracy. When a wounded legislative leadership, and a lame-duck executive, force through draconian changes with no time for robust review and debate it leaves Carolina no better than the authoritarian regimes we look down upon.

So that is the summary of some of the Replublican efforts at destroying democracy.
Let's dig into the details and supporting evidence.
Main website:

The Electoral Integrity Project is an independent academic project based at Harvard University and the University of Sydney. The EIP project is directed by the founding Director, Professor Pippa Norris, and governed by an International Advisory Board. The project is administered by the EIP Project Coordinator, Ms. Alexander Kennett. The work has been generously funded by many foundations and partners, notably the Australian Research Council Laureate Award.
AIMS AND OBJECTIVES
Since its inception in mid-2012, the Electoral Integrity Project has focused upon three issues:
When do elections meet international standards of electoral integrity?
What happens when elections fail to do so?
And what can be done to mitigate these problems?
EIP has sought to produce innovative and policy-relevant scientific research that achieves international standing in the social sciences and leads to a significant advancement of capabilities and knowledge about elections, democracy, and autocracy.

No group claiming to support electoral integrity can be taken seriously as long as they accept money from George Soros. His constant meddling in international politics compromises the integrity of the electoral process in every country he tries to subvert.

First methods and design of study.
METHODS AND RESEARCH DESIGN
To examine how any problems varied by state, and whether registration and balloting facilities influenced the perceived quality of elections, the study used an expert survey to compare assessments of the 2014 and 2016 elections across American states.
For the 2014 study, the study stratified all US states based on their population size and the proportion of the Republican vote in 2010, and then used a random sampling procedure to select 21 states. For the 2016 study, all states plus DC were included.
Electoral laws and voter registration procedures were classified by state, as well as their levels of party competition and voting turnout, facilitating multilevel analysis to determine whether perceptions of electoral integrity vary according to types of context.
Fieldwork using the PEI-US questionnaire was conducted during the month following polling day. The PEI-US-2016 survey was compiled from responses received from 726 election experts in total. The online survey questionnaire includes 49 core items on electoral integrity. These are used to construct the overall 100-point standardized Perceptions of Electoral Integrity Index and similar indices are created for each of the 11 stages in the electoral system.

Either their methods and data sets hold up to standards and scrutiny, or they don't.
If they told you that drinking bleach was bad for you, I am sure you would go right out and guzzle some Chlorox, because Soros funded them right?
That is the fallacy of ad hominem. Outright rejecting information and arguments based on the source is weak sauce.

Don't drink bleach. It is bad for you. Just want that to be clear.

What a ridiculous comparison. The fact that drinking bleach can potentially kill you isn't a political opinion. The claim that a Republican-run state is "destroying democracy" and is just as totalitarian as third-world dictatorships is a political opinion. And when a supposedly "independent" and "non-partisan" group is putting out partisan hit pieces, of course it's important to start asking questions - like, for instance, who's paying them to spew this drivel.
The combination of their absurdly hyperbolic claims against Republicans and all the money they take from the most prominent left-wing donor in the world makes it impossible to take them seriously. It also renders their methods and data sets meaningless. We all know Soros isn't going to pay the big bucks for methods and data sets that contradict his narrative.
That is the fallacy of ad hominem. Outright rejecting information and arguments based on the source is weak sauce.
If the parties were reversed and the Electoral Integrity Project was being heavily funded by the Koch brothers, we all know you wouldn't be spamming their study incessantly. You are a partisan hack, just be honest for once and admit it.

By the way, here's what a professional statistician has to say about the Electoral Integrity Project's methods and data sets:
About that bogus claim that North Carolina is no longer a democracy . . .
North Carolina is not even the lowest-ranked state! Alabama, Michigan, Ohio, Georgia, Rhode Island, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Mississippi, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Wisconsin, and Arizona are lower.
Hmmm. Whassup with that?
Here's the international map from The Year in Elections, 2014 (https://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=2567075), by Pippa Norris, Ferran Martinez i Coma, and Max Grömping:

There's North Korea in yellow, one of the countries with "moderate" electoral integrity. Indeed, go to the chart and they list North Korea as #65 out of 127 countries. The poor saps in Bulgaria and Romania are ranked #90 and 92, respectively. Clearly what they need is a dose of Kim Jong-il.
Let's see what this measure actually is. From the report:
The survey asks experts to evaluate elections using 49 indicators, grouped into eleven categories reflecting the whole electoral cycle. Using a comprehensive instrument, listed at the end of the report, experts assess whether each national parliamentary and presidential contest meets international standards during the pre-election period, the campaign, polling day and its aftermath. The overall PEI index is constructed by summing the 49 separate indicators for each election and for each country. . . .
Around forty domestic and international experts were consulted about each election, with requests to participate sent to a total of 4,970 experts, producing an overall mean response rate of 29%. The rolling survey results presented in this report are drawn from the views of 1,429 election experts.
OK, let's check what the experts said about North Korea; it's on page 9 of the report:
Electoral laws 53
Electoral procedures 73
District boundaries 73
Voter registration 83
Party and candidate registration 54
Media coverage 78
Campaign finance 84
Voting process 53
Vote count 74
Results 80
Electoral authorities 60
Each of these is on a 0-100 scale with 100 being good. So, you got it, North Korea is above 50 in every category on the scale.
Who did they get to fill out this survey? Walter Duranty?
OK, let's look more carefully. In this table, the response rate for North Korea is given as 6%. And the report said they consulted about 40 "domestic and international experts" for each election. Hmmm . . . 6% of 40 is 2.4, so maybe they got 3 respondents for North Korea, 2 of whom were Stalinists.
That 2014 report mentioned above gave North Korea a rating of 65.3 out of 100 and Cuba a rating of 65.6. Both these numbers are higher than at least 27 of the 50 U.S. states in 2016, according to the savants at the Electoral Integrity Project.
Political science, indeed.
What went wrong here? It all seems like an unstable combination of political ideology, academic self-promotion, credulous journalism, and plain old incompetence.

In short: :lol at buying into a Soros-funded study from a group that unironically believes that North Korea and Cuba have fairer elections than over half of the states in the US. I thought the Democrats were supposed to be the "party of science" and the Republicans were the "anti-intellectual" party?
