See no evil, hear no evil: Donald Trump is turning away his intelligence briefings

Source: Salon

Donald Trump has a disturbing habit of declining his daily intelligence briefings, and that’s causing politicians to be concerned.

“We find it particularly troubling that President-elect Trump has mostly declined to take the daily intelligence briefing,” wrote Sens. Ben Cardin of Maryland and Dianne Feinstein of California, both Democrats, in an editorial for USA Today on Thursday. “Presidents and presidents-elect going back decades have begun their day this way — understanding national security threats and opportunities, asking probing questions, and making tough decisions.”

The senators continue, “The information and analysis that our intelligence community provides to decision-makers is invaluable for developing a full and nuanced picture of the world.”

Does it make it any less true coming from somewhere else? I mean, point me to your favorite news site. It will probably be there as well.

How did they do a counter story for Trump over two years ago?

Generally speaking. They have been doing this for over a year now.

For example a couple of weeks ago it was that Trump wanted to put people in jail for burning the flag. A day later, they came out with an article about Hillary wanting the same in defense of Trump.

Always with the but but excuse.

Missing a daily status update is a little more understandable when you've been on the job for a while. For the most part, you're caught up, and most days probably don't contain drastic changes in intelligence. Any pertinent issues would still make their way to the President. It's not like they're going to put off urgent issues of national security because they didn't have their daily briefing.

lol @ comparing it to starting a new job and needing to get caught up on everything going on. Especially when you're starting from scratch (likely worse than scratch.)

Yeah I don't know why I qualified this with "likely." This is a guy whose literacy of current events is, at its BEST, illustrated by tweets that are predictably timed following FOX News segments on the topic of his tweet... at worst, illustrated by a propensity to take InfoWars news as fact.

Even though there is a lot about his personality I don't like, he certainly is not stupid. Definitely a compelling, interesting fellow. This will be a unique 4 years. So far he is all over the place. I am becoming more convinced that calling him a Republican is not a good fit.

I guarantee you he reads both the Washington Post and the NYTimes. They have things to say about him and both have reputations as very good on foreign affairs. He has already admitted to the editor on the NYTimes he thought it was perhaps the best paper in the world. NPR interview. But also that the NYTimes had been rough on him. The editor told him that he considered this doing their job. NYTimes got plenty of flack from Hillary dems about the Clinton foundation. By far the most legit story on the type of people and cronyism within this organization along with conflict of interest.

an online conspiracy theory for which there is no evidence — that the restaurant is a front for child sex abuse involving Hillary Clinton

The gunman, Edgar M. Welch, surrendered after telling the police (http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2016/12/05/us/document-Edgar-Welch-Criminal-Complaint-Comet-Ping-Pong.html?_r=0) that he had discovered that there were no child sex slaves being held at the pizza place, Comet Ping Pong, despite the lurid fantasies he had read online about a made-up scandal known as “PizzaGate (https://www.buzzfeed.com/craigsilverman/fever-swamp-election?utm_term=.bbaGd9AXM#.djyxoWZgQ),” which surfaced just before Election Day.

Those who had worked diligently to spread the hoax — and others who had a hard time accepting that it was obviously not true — had by Sunday night started to claim that Welch himself was part of the plot.

Flynn’s willingness to adopt the default position of conspiracy theorists — demanding that the rest of us prove that the wild fantasies they have concocted without evidence are not true — matters

but it is important to realize that the phenomenon we are confronting here is not simply fake news of the sort peddled for profit by apolitical entrepreneurs (https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/the-intersect/wp/2016/11/17/facebook-fake-news-writer-i-think-donald-trump-is-in-the-white-house-because-of-me/?utm_term=.fa9029df5f5b) on Facebook. This is something different: a hoax created and released into the darker reaches of the internet for the express purpose of damaging the reputation of the Democratic candidate for the presidency.

Trump says it’s OK if he skips intelligence briefings because he’s ‘a smart person’

Trump said he gets briefings “when I need it” because

“I don’t have to be told — you know, I’m, like, a smart person. I don’t have to be told the same thing in the same words every single day for the next eight years.

Could be eight years — but eight years. I don’t need that.”

PUTIN AGREES TO RECEIVE INTELLIGENCE BRIEFINGS IN TRUMP’S PLACE

http://www.newyorker.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/Borowitz-PutinAgreestoReceiveIntelligenceBriefingsinTrumpsP lace-1200.jpg

NEW YORK — In what Donald Trump’s transition-team members are calling a further example of international coöperation (http://www.newyorker.com/humor/borowitz-report/trump-to-split-time-between-trump-tower-and-kremlin), Russian President Vladimir Putin has agreed to receive daily U.S. intelligence briefings in the place of the President-elect.

Trump, who had earlier decided that he did not need the briefings and had assigned Vice-President-elect Mike Pence to receive them, said on Tuesday that Putin was a “much better choice.”

“No offense to Mike, but Vladimir Putin is just a terrific, terrific guy to do this,” he said. “He knows all the players.”

Trump said that, while he was “totally uninterested” in receiving the briefings, Putin appeared to be “extremely interested.”

“He’s just terrific,” he said.

Trump also touted his deal-making prowess in securing the Russian President’s services.

“The American people are getting an amazing deal here,” he said. “Putin is doing this totally for free.”
