With the events occurring today and over the last two weeks, I think there's a possibility for something to occur that hasn't in over 14 years.
A football game between the Houston Cougars and Texas Longhorns.
Everyone is well aware of the bleacher-botch episode in Sept 2001, and how it essentially put a kibosh on these programs sharing a field for an indefinite period.
But even that was under the old regime of Deloss Dodds.
The two current ADs of each school, along with the school prez's, have a warmer relationship.
And now we have the hiring of the Houston football coach at the Forty Acres, followed by the (hopefully longterm) commitment of a UT legend to lead the team on Cullen Blvd.
I can see no better time than to finally bridge the gap, formalize and normalize relations, and end the frosty link between the two long-term rivals.
The first opening is in two years:
Houston has an opening in its non-conference schedule in 2018.
Texas is only committed to play at Maryland and home vs Southern Cal in 2018.
That would provide an opportunity for a 1 and 1 with the latter being in 2019, with the Horns having Rice and La Tech, could use a stronger G5 opponent in Houston.
The Cougars conversely can strengthen their 2019 docket with adding Texas to its already Big12 opponents of Oklahoma and Kansas.
I believe the Tom Herman/Major Applewhite connection will deliver the final blow to knockoff the resentment from the beginning of this century.
Personally as a long time (since 1991) UH fan, I cannot think of any opponent more desirous for the Houston Cougars football team to meet than Texas.
A lot will be proven during these potential games.
To the point the nation will have its eyes firmly planted on TDECU and DKR stadiums.
