View Full Version : PS4 or XBone?

What should I purchase this holiday season?
I have a xbox360, with a small collection of games with gold. Nothing I'm too terribly attached to.
Use Xbox live for netflix, hbogo, amazon, hulu, youtube. But I'm getting an Amazon TV to jailbreak and will prob stream movies on that thing bc it's supposed to have a higher speed.
Are there any 1 console games I should be aware of? What's the status on the pros and cons of each console at this point?
Thanks for the advice.

PS4 has double the users of Xbox so multiplayer is better.
Also, PS4 has more and better exclusives. Xbox doesnt have an exclusive that can really sway the tide. At this point Ps4 is like the warriors and xbox is like the Dallas mavericks of exclusives.
I suppose of you want a purely american experience, Xbox is your console since I would say xbox owners are about 95% Americans.
Up to you..Xbox seem to have a more "Patriotic"touch.
Power is virtually the same...

Tbh the only thing you should look at are the exclusive titles. Do a quick search and see what interests you. But for discussion purposes, PS4 has quite a few more. Some of which are extremely popular, like the Naughty Dog games.

I think PS4 has much better exclusives: for instance, The Last of Us, God of War 3, the upcoming God of War, Bloodborne, the entire Uncharted series, and there are some amazing looking exclusives like Days Gone, Horizon Zero Dawn, Nioh, Uncharted Lost Legacy, and The Last of Us Part 2 upcoming in the next couple of years. The only really good XBox One exclusives are the Forza series if like driving games, and Gears of War. XBox One does have backward compatibility for lots of XBox 360 games, which PS4 doesn't: PS4 has lots of remasters with better textures and better framerates, but for non-remastered games your only option is shitty streaming over Playstation Now. At a hardware level even the regular PS4 is significantly stronger than the XBox One, which means it usually gets better framerates and renders at higher resolutions. Or if you buy the PS4 Pro lots of games render at 1800p or 1440p. The XBox One S has support for 4k Blu Ray while no PS4 does if you actually watch movies on disc anymore.

Another strike against XBox One is every XBox One exclusive now comes to Windows through the Windows Store, so if you have a good computer you can get Gears of War 4, Forza Horizon 3, etc on your PC.

If you do buy one, get it Christmas Eve or earlier. PS4 Slim has a price cut to $250 until then (it goes back up to $300 on Christmas day), and comes with Uncharted 4. I have seen XBox One S for $250 with Battlefield 1 lately also. PS4 Pro isn't likely to go on sale, but is what I'd go with if you're running on a 4k TV.

That's crazy consoles get such great deals for Christmas. PC hardware usually sees big price spikes the second November ends.
In full disclosure, always been an Xbox guy. Gave the PS4 a real go for about a year this year. Was nice but just didn't do anything for me to say wow, I need to switch consoles. Had great exclusives but I still prefer the Xbox. Ended up selling the PS4.
Just my two cents.

Why? What was the big selling point for XBox One over PS4? Especially when XB1 renders games at lower resolutions and lower framerates most of the time? I was on the XBox side last generation since PS3 was such a mess the first 3 years. I remember XBox 360 games usually ran better and looked better until the last half of the PS3's lifetime when it finally started catching up. Plus XBox 360 was around $400 when I got mine while Sony was still a few months from their $600 release. But this generation PS4 seems worlds better unless you're a huge fan of Forza, Gears of War, or Dead Rising. XBone would only make sense to me for either those exclusives, for the 4k Blu Ray drive in the XBox One S, or if it got a price cut to say $50 below PS4 Slim prices. Oh, and the backwards compatibility is nice on XBone too. Shit, I forgot that.

The system costs twice as much but gets twice the performance. Nowadays a good CPU lasts 6+ years and a good GPU 3+ years for 1080p gaming. Not like the old days 15 years ago when your top of the line cpu was low end within a year and a half, and similar for the gpu. PC gaming can be a money pit if you're a moron who always needs the newest hardware and lots of pc gamers are like that, but most of that money spent is the difference between ultra and high settings which almost no one could tell apart anyways.

Somewhat. Uncharted is essentially tomb raider with a male lead. But UC4 plays almost exactly like the last of us with platforming

PS4 Slim is probably the best buy for 1080p, but PS4 Pro should look significantly better if you have a reasonably large 4k TV since it renders most games at 1800p or 1440p (and a few like The Last of Us and Skyrim are rendered at native 4k, eg 2160p). But if you like shooters like Battlefield 1 the PS4 Pro gets a significantly higher framerate even on 1080p. Check Digital Foundry's channel on youtube to see whether the gains from PS4 Pro are worth the higher price. They have a ton of PS4 vs PS4 Pro vs XBox One vs PC comparions.

Really? The gameplay on TR 2013 and ROTR are pretty similar to that of The Last of Us (at least the first couple of hours of the game that I have played). I don't think PS3 can do TR 2013 justice graphically. That game really pushed high end PCs when it came out. It should really look amazing on the PS4's gpu though (I think it's similar in power to the AMD HD 7870 XT). And then ROTR has a PS4 Pro patch to play at 1800p (and upscale to 4k).
:lol everything you just said at the end is why...the 4k, the price drop, the backwards compatibility. On top of that I just prefer the interface better. The frame rate and resolution is negligible when not playing side by side so it's not a deal breaker for me. The indie games on the PS4 are better than Xbox though.

people like to chuckle about the controller size but I like the Xbox controller. They fit in the Palms nicely and I like the action when there's an explosion or some sort of game dynamic. They have a good feel. Plus a lot of Xbox One deals come bundled with Battlefield. Are the PlayStation 4 controllers comparable? Do they have their own nice feel about them with a good in-game Dynamic feel? They look small in pictures. I'm thinking of picking up a PS4

I haven't played the XBox One much and can't remember what I thought of its controller, but I definitely like the XBox 360 controller more than the Dualshock 4 on the PS4. It does feel small playing with it. It's not a controller that's uncomfortable to use like say the NES controller, but it does feel lighter, smaller, and cheaper than the XBox 360's controller (which is the best I have used). I think Sony's best controller was the Dualshock 2 on the PS2, that thing felt solid as hell.

I don't remember anybody poking fun at the Microsoft controllers (not since those massive ones originally released with the first Xbox). Agree with BB though. The Dualshock 4 controller has been comfortable to use, but I still find it a little on the small side. As somebody with hands larger than Donald Trump, the 360 controller was damn near perfect. My boys have an XBone, which I've only played a few times, but the controller is pretty much the same.
My PS4 controller has a dead battery, so now I have to crack the thing open to replace it, spend $60 on a new one, or order a knockoff from China since there are no third party options. The controller is Microsoft's biggest (and probably only) advantage IMO.

GTA V is the one XBone game I have played (on my brother's system) and it looked great on it. NBA 2k should run great on anything. I'm not sure of Battlefield 1's performance on XBone, but it's one of the best optimized games I have ever seen on the PC side so it's one of the last games I'd worry about on the system (as opposed to say Fallout 4). Since you can get BF1 with an XBox One S for $250 and only want to play three games it seems like a no-brainer to go with XBone over PoorStation. The resolution on XBone vs PoorStation is very different in many SP games though. A lot of XBone games are rendered at 1600x900 when their PoorStation equivalents are rendered at 1920x1080. XBone uses a weaker gpu than PS4 since they were trying to cut costs to be able to fit in their Kinect bullshit at launch.

I'm not a fan of it needing that micro USB plug. I would much prefer using AA batteries like I do with my XBox 360 controller. Rechargeable batteries are cheap as hell and I never have to plug the controller into anything.

Had the system for a week now. Pretty happy with it so far. Runs quiet and doesn't get hot even laying on its side as long as you don't block the vent area. Was hoping to be able to run more television apps on it but it seems to block all of the spectrum apps. It's more of a pain in the ass to watch television on it than I thought it would be. Now I just use my fanless Mini PC for television streaming.
the newer controllers believe it or not seem a little bit cheaper than the older 360 controllers. Some of the Buzz's and boom movements fuel cheaper and more plasticky then before. They're made of lighter material. I might have wanted to consider just getting a PS4 and getting one of those controller changes that allows you to use an Xbox controller on a PlayStation 4.
