View Full Version : Looking Forward to a Good Week for the Spurs

If we can beat the Rockets and defeat a Blake-less Clips team we'll have a nice margin in the race for # 2 in the West. (For those who don't know Blake is out until January after knee surgery to be held early this week. As our game is Thursday, I'll assume he's out for it.)
I predict 3-0 on the road this week!:flag:

I don't like this second seed talk. That's what it's been the past few seasons. Why not go for number 1 seed? Should always be going for the number 1`seed. I will be happy with the number 2 seed if that is where we end up and tried our best, but the mindset seems to be to go for number 2 as number 1 in unreachable - I just don't like that approach/mindset.
btw, this is nothing to do with your post BillMc, it's a good post, but I just wanted to use this opportunity to mention that never outright going for the number one seed the past couple of years has bothered me. Nothing to do with your post. These two upcoming games are great tests to see where the Spurs are and like you said, it could give them an early grip on the second seed. Hopefully the Spurs are up for the challenge.

No problem bro. I'm all for the #1 seed (and we're only a game back) but the point of this post is we play the two teams right behind us, and excepting the Jazz and maybe Grizz, the only threats for at least the second seed. If the Warriors were on the schedule this week I'd have mentioned going for 1.

Yeah, you are right. I shouldn't have bought it up in your thread as that was not the point of it. It's a great chance for the Spurs to create separation from those two teams under us. I'll bring it up in another thread sometime.

The TD retirement was such an incredible experience for everyone.
After witnessing and listening to the speeches about what made Timmy such a unique champion, its hard to not try to follow the lead ( so to speak).
Wouldnt surprise me if the ceremony was be a spring board for a run of better play, better commitment and a lot more quality wins. Or if they caught Golden State by the All Star break or won 10-15 in a row.

It's cool you brought it up. I mean discussions are what this board is for. :toast

Tough road trip ... would have liked to see Clippers at full strength but will take the W anyway (which is not edged in stone). The Rockets will hunt the Spurs for the second seed ... they way they are playing (regular season bb) they might win more games down the road. Eric Gordon will likely continue to kill us. And playing at Portland is always tough, but they play no defense.
What do I want to say? it will either be 2-1 or 1-2 on this road trip ... I doubt we will be able to get separation from the Rockets.

I agree (except the Clippers and Rockets would race to drop to the #4 seed).

Spurs will lose both unfortunately.

Right. Given Warriors aren't on the schedule again until two home dates in March (10 weeks from Christmas), let's not worry about them until then. Build a buffer over the 3-4 seeds, who both have higher point differentials which is worrisome. Assuming the Warriors are within striking distance, one of two games would give the Spurs the tiebreaker.
Portland finally regressed this year, but the back-to-back on the road after flying in from LA with them having a day off likely means 2-1 at best this week. The Toronto game is the best opponent on the schedule, but they're on the road through the entire holidays and may be on fumes by then.
By the @ Cleveland game (15 games), team should be 33-9 or so. If better, Warriors will still be in striking distance.

Meh, the clippers game is a lose lose. I really wanted the spurs to play a full strength clips team to see where we're really at.

We need to win the 3 games.
No joking.
The team has played well in the last few games and need to continue to build on it.
We are looking for consistency, and a consistent team beats those 3.

not gonna happen tbh .... record wise the Spurs are overachieving right now (net differential is a good indicator for that) ... the last few gates we got out of the gates stronger, but I doubt Spurs will be able to win all three games

If we don't win all 3 games by a combined total of 50+ points this team of gutless worms is done.
The Rockets matchup should be interesting..
Long term, the Spurs should avoid the Clippers as much as possible in the playoffs but I don't think they can control that too well. The number 1 seed is pretty much locked up by the Warriors since they have no problem cruising through the softer teams. The Spurs still struggle versus mediocre teams. Just have to hope the Spurs land the 2nd seed and the Clippers land 4-5. Beating the Clippers this week would help.

Rockets coach Mike D'Antoni said Clint Capela (left knee) is not expected to play on Tuesday vs. the Spurs.
D'Antoni added that Capela is in "a lot of pain" and that he may get an MRI on his left knee.
It will be interesting to see the minute allocation on our bigs.

#1 seed might actually be the tougher path this season tbh. I'd rather only have to face GS without HCA than both GS/LAC with it.

Clippers are only scary for the Spurs. GSW doesn't have any problem with them. They might even prefer them over the Rockets.

Exactly, I'm talking about the Spurs. If they get the first seed and LAC the fourth, Spurs prolly lose in the semis. Let the Dubs take care of them.

Spurs aren't good enough for the #1 seed. They aren't nearly as good as their record suggests. GS is easily playing a level above the Spurs and have the much higher ceiling. Getting the #1 seed would be great, but it's not happening with Pop's horrible resting patterns and GS's fantastic play.

It's way too early in the season to talk about seeding anyway. What's important is to beat all the top teams in the West because that's what creates better seeding scenarios in the end. In the past few seasons aiming for the 2nd seed hasn't diminished our chances: it's not taking care of good teams early in the season that has come back to bite us in the ass, because Pop doesn't want to show his hands or is still fiddling with some crazy rotations... like a few years back when we had the 2nd seed a couple of games before the end of the season and ended up at #6 because we dropped a stupid game here and there.

We should return the favor of Capela's alley oops on the 2nd game against them, Dedmon should have no problem feasting over the height challenged Harrel & non athletic TOSB Nene. The guards just have to facilitate better, opportunities will be aplenty.

I agree the Trail Blazers game is the most likely loss of the 3. Not only is it likely to be a rest game, but that team, though clearly not as good as they were projected to be, is due to start playing better. Watch it be their enough is enough game.
The biggest recent development with this team, is Aldridge's increased give a shit level in the past 2 games. He still hasn't shot it well, but his frustration is clearly boiling over and his activity level has improved. I get the sense that he's about to go off.

So, we went 2-1 on a tough road trip. We beat Houston and got a little separation, and we kept the Clips at arms length as our loss to them was balanced out by their loss to Dallas.
All and all a good week for the Spurs and Spurs fans. Let's have a Merry Xmas (everyone) and enjoy a win over Da Bulls!
Happy Holidays.
