Hard for me to see the upward trend from Manu. And I don't remember seeing Kawhi play a worse game ever.

But for Manu and Kawhi's back-to-back TOs, Spurs would have a decent lead.
Acknowledged on both,
but I meant Manu had been shooting so poorly in a few games that seeing his shooting % go up to me is trending up. But I agree he's not helpful when he tries to do too much...
This is just a horrible Kiwi game.

This is just a horrible Kiwi game.

Seriously Manu is a great spot-up 3-point shooter. He could become a mini-Horry and prolong his career IF he would Just resign himself to that role. But as long as he insists on doing ANYTHING more, he is a liability more times than not. Pop needs to forget the "because he's Manu Ginobili" schtick and put his foot down with the guy.

I just wonder if Kawhi has some little injury or something going on in his personal life: maybe the new baby isn't letting Kawhi get enough sleep. :lol

frustration comes with being a die hard fan, fam. i wear my emotions on my sleeve.

Ya - especially in a game like this where you blow a lead and really go ice cold, it's tough. SA fans hate HOU too so it's tough. This game is a loss 95/100 times and people are going to be upset, but it was an amazing win even with some what appeared to be back breaking moments at the end.

However, I like what Im seeing with this team's demeanor. They stay clam like Kawhi and just chip away and fight. Watching Danny/Patty throw flames is awesome.

:lol

I think Kawhi just had a bad game. It happens sometimes.

I am convinced by now Manu is gonna Manu. Pop can't reign him in except sitting him down and he's not going to do that.

Manu is gonna want to be himself but mind and body are not as one right now. I have though same as you he needs to spot up more but he likes the ball, he wants to do his stuff, and I think if you told him he can't be himself it's going to be time to retire. Just got to enjoy him. I suspect it's the last season. And I have a feeling that when he does retire Ill miss him same as Tim.

Yep, neither team played true to form. If you were handicapping a horse you would just throw out this race as totally anomalous. Glad we got the W, but honestly the only take-away from this game is what was the deal with Kawhi?!?!?!

I'm going to chalk it up as just one of those sloppy games everyone has when they aren't locked-in, LeBron had a similar type of game against the Bucks when Giannis actually also had his way on the other end. At least Kawhi was active on defense & didn't let his offensive struggles get to him.

Their role players down low had big games. Nene and harrell both shot near perfect games. Very gritty win. Great call to have Mills close. Not sure I like Manu out there to close though, I know he was hot, but man he makes horrible decisions these days..

I saw a different game. Kawhi looked like he didn't have much effort at all. Most of his drives ended up in backing his player up instead of getting to the rim, his shot just didn't look smooth, his close out's were atrocious.. looks like the season of being no. 1 is weighing down on him mentally tbh.

Simms and Bertrans couldn't stop passing up shots. They got the minutes, they just gotta play better if they want more consistent minutes and a bigger role. The Bertrans/Anderson situation is kinda worrisome actually. I get Davis is on his first year, but you get a shot you gotta take advantage...

It's not about being spineless. We have no impact on the game. It's about the emotional investment and when things are going poorly you get dejected. These aren't disciplined pro athletes - they are fans. Sure, it's nice not to melt down, but fans aren't usually a rational group.

Actually, I must admit you are right. My original comment is more an expression of frustration that we do not have a real slasher/creator who could effectively assume those responsibilities. Manu has become increasingly unreliable, and he will not bail out the Spurs consistently enough in the playoffs. There's that, plus the fact that he is a deadly spot-up 3-point shot. If we had somebody to create, Manu could become a mini-Horry for another 2-3 years and really help out the Spurs in that re-defined role.

It also doesnt seem like a high turnover game from him, nor he shot bad percentages.

Exactly, a mini-Horry or mini-Ray Allen type of player, I like Simmons chances as a slasher given his athleticism, and Kawhi is a slasher sometimes and sometimes prefers jumpers, but when jumpers are not working you must penetrate and Kaw doesnt switch.
As for playmakers we really need one ASAP because Manu wont be forever, we have great passers but is not the same thing.

I totally agree and I have expressed the same in some variation or another. I thought Pop would let him struggle through like he let Danny struggle last season and at some point adjust but he won't. If I focus on that it makes me pessimistic.

They had some chances even tonight and stunk it up. They've had plenty chances since the season started and as much I've been rooting for Simms, Davis, Slomo... can you tell me with a straight face any of those guys clearly earned mins over TOSB Manu?

You would think they would be tearing each other throats for a spot that appears at least available, but they all largely have a deer in headlights look.

You would think they would be tearing each other throats for a spot that appears at least available, but they all largely have a deer in headlights look. Well Manu has a competiveness that allows him to keep playing hard even when he screws up. Yeah he turned it over and missed two ft's that could have iced it, but without his steal and drawing in the defensive and making that pass to Patty, we lose. The young guys have a ways to go before they'll have that determination, confidence, and fire.

You would think they would be tearing each other throats for a spot that appears at least available, but they all largely have a deer in headlights look.

My take is simple. They could all do more but it would invite mistakes as well. They might not be better than this Manu right now just bc they are not better shooters than Manu, the base talent level is different, their skills are different, and Bertans while a true sniper, he's a big so it's an entirely different game.

Anyways, Manu is still a plus contributor, but he does need to defer more. This might just be a bad game to cite bc Kawhi struggled so much anyways and from what I saw, Rockets packed the paint at times. It was also a tough game for Simmons who likes to get to the basket and he passed up shots from the perimeter again.

So it's basically which struggles you can live with. Manu is a HOF player who is still capable of hot shooting nights so for Pop it's better to live through his struggles than the other guys who could be shaky just the same and you just don't know how they will do yet bc they are all new. They all have few minutes playing pro. Ppl cite Kyle 3rd season but he hasn't played a lot of minutes pro, Simms either and Bertans I hear has a pro since he was 15 but it's different league, he's played as a big and that's a different game. I am glad at least Manu's shot is back.

Anyways this discussion is purely hypothetical bc Patty is playing at a high level nightly and the team usually always gets contributions from the bench bigs. It will become a factor only when other teams pack the paint. That's when Simmons lack of outside shooting will become a concern.

Oh, I saw that live too. Being in NY, I rooted for those 90's Knicks a lot, obv 2nd after the Spurs. I guess I consider what tmac did on another level, but both were incredible.

Reggie's was probably more soul crushing simply because of the rivalry he had with the Knicks/Spike at the time

Live? As in at the Garden? Wow, cool!

I guess my perspective would be just the opposite. TMac's 13 pts in 35 seconds was absolutely soul-crushing because I was a real fan of the Spurs. But Reggie's 8 points in only 9 seconds was truly unbelievable. I didn't really react on the same emotional level because I was not nearly as big a fan of the Knicks. But Reggie's having the presence of mind to make the steal and then step back behind the 3-point line for that second trey (not to mention the skill to nail the shot) was mind-blowing under those pressure-packed circumstances.
