Struggling Trail Blazers gear up for surging Spurs

PORTLAND, Ore. -- The Portland Trail Blazers (http://www.espn.com/nba/team/_/name/por/portland-trail-blazers) could use a get-well card type of opponent, but no such luck.
The Trail Blazers, who have lost four straight and eight of their last nine outings, play host to the streaking San Antonio Spurs (http://www.espn.com/nba/team/_/name/sa/san-antonio-spurs) Friday night at Moda Center.

In a 96-95 loss on Wednesday night, Portland (13-18) gave up 62 first-half points to a Dallas team that came in averaging an NBA-low 94.1 points per game, and with a 1-13 record in road games.

Dallas scored only 36 second-half points on .342 shooting, including 1 for 17 from 3-point range. That didn't provide much solace for Portland coach Terry Stotts, who didn't mince words afterward.

"We didn't play hard enough in the first half to win a game," Stotts said. "We didn't play with enough passion, enough heart. Dallas played well, but to give up 62 in the first half against the lowest-scoring team in the league? It's unacceptable.

"We just didn't do it. I'm not going to take any consolation or anything else about how we played the second half. It was nice we came back, but the first half was unacceptable."

The biggest reason for Portland's recent slide has been defense. The Blazers rank among the bottom six in the NBA in opponents' scoring, opponents' field-goal percentage and opponents' 3-point percentage. They have given up 120 points 10 times, including four of the last six games.

Five times this season, the opposition has scored 100 points through the first three quarters against Portland. That has happened on only 14 other occasions throughout the league this season.

After starting the 2015-16 season with an 11-20 record, the Blazers turned things around, going 33-18 the rest of the way en route to finish with a 44-38 mark that got them the No. 5 seed in the Western Conference playoffs. Stotts was asked why he thinks the Blazers can become a better defensive team the rest of this season.

"Primarily because we did it last year," he said. "We have most of the same guys. Because we've done it before with the same group, we feel like we can do it. We haven't gotten there yet. We're a long way from there.

"But I've been with these guys for a long time. I know their character and desire. It's not like they're laying down. It's not like they're not playing hard. All those things combined will help us figure it out."

San Antonio brings a 22-6 record into Moda Center after seeing its five-game win streak snapped Thursday night at Staples Center by the Los Angeles Clippers. The Spurs' success is in no small part thanks to a bench anchored for former Trail Blazer guard Patty Mills (http://www.espn.com/nba/player/_/id/4004/patty-mills), who has come off the bench to serve as the Spurs' No. 4 scorer at 11.3 points per game.

"Reminds me of the way Patty played during our last championship season (2013-14)," Spurs assistant coach Ime Udoka told the Portland Tribune. "He had (foot) surgery that year and has struggled to get back, but the way he's playing now, he's doing everything we could ask for."

Joining Mills on San Antonio's second unit are veteran Manu Ginobili (http://www.espn.com/nba/player/_/id/272/manu-ginobili), second-year guard Jonathon Simmons (http://www.espn.com/nba/player/_/id/2579466/jonathon-simmons) and free agent front-liners David Lee (http://www.espn.com/nba/player/_/id/2772/david-lee) and Dewayne Dedmon (http://www.espn.com/nba/player/_/id/2580913/dewayne-dedmon).

"We feel like we have an advantage every night with our bench, and that starts with Patty," Udoka says. "It's a different bench than we had a year ago, in a good way. We're a little surprised with how quickly Lee and Dedmon have caught on. This group brings more pace, more energy, more athleticism."

Similar to the Bulls game, I worry about the fact these guys are struggling and we're on a b2b coming into their house.

This time however we're coming off a loss too. I expect a much better outing from our guys.

Agreed. But as you say the difference with the Bulls game is we lost last night. I don't see them coming out flat again.

It'll be interesting whether Pop starts Murray again after his disastrous play against Dallas. Laprovittola has been terrible in his last few stints off the bench.

Had this as a scheduled loss at the start of the season. Don't see any reason to think otherwise. Portland is in desperation mode looking for a statement win to "get their season back on track". They'll win and feel good about themselves, then proceed to lose three straight.

I suspect baptism by for him. Pop has to know what he has, otherwise what's the point?

If he's expecting Murray to do anything positive on the defensive end against Lollard or McCollum he's in for a rude awakening. Murray is only playing so others can rest; no reason to further complicate things by getting him three fouls in two minutes.

SAGirl
12-23-2016, 09:25 PM
You have a good point but I assume they sent him to the dleague with a list of things to work on and Pop will want to know where he's at since he admitted he doesn't watch their dleague games at all and they rarely practice during the RS. Games like these are the opportunities Pop has to see where he's at. This is Dijon's chance to show the coach if he's improved or not. If he doesn't look good he might go back down to the dleague etc and again Lapro get the 3 rd string spot. They obviously like him and the kid is talented... Coach just got to see if he's going to be able to help any. He gave the same opportunities to Ray Mac last season etc...

They could always adjust o r being Lapro if Dijon is not cutting it. I look forward to see how he does. :tu

Why is Porker playing against daddy Choke-P3 then resting when the only guy he owns (Lillard) is on the schedule?:wakeup

Yesterday's game would have been a nice experiment for starting Patty against Choke-P then having Murray be the primary backup matched up w/ Patty's daddy (Rivers).

Even when LMA is playing hard the team often struggles because Pop continually puts in horrible lineups and mismanages minutes. There's only so much you can put on lack of effort before it becomes apparent there are deeper and more fatal problems.

LMA's feeds off the team's energy and not the other way around. He becomes a good piece if the remaining four players move around in rhythm. Hence his passiveness when paired up with Gasol and Parker. Conversely, Gasol and Parker are expendable regardless of who they play with. The Parker Grasol LMA combo is simply too much advantage for the opposition.

notwithstanding the Blazers average play, a very refreshing first half. A more futuristic Spurs team with a lot be liked in energy terms. Basketball execution still questionable but at least this very formation has an upside, unlike the "A" SQUAD carrying too many old players.

I try to think about this stuff from Pop's pov. To bring in what's considered a big named FA and to bench him less than 2 months in could be seen as tasteless.

I say give it till the end of January and Pop will make the change. It'll be good for Pau too probably, that 2nd unit is much more fluid and would fit him well.

I want to bench Gasol too, but the problem with that is Gasol has shown to be a first class pussy. If Popovich moves him to the bench, even coming off the bench, his game would be over. Him starting actually helps what little confidence he has. So we all want that bitch on the bench, but Popvoch knows that moving him to the bench would destroy him

Agreed. In hindsight, NOBODY expected such great response from Lee/ Dedmon before the season started. Gasol can have a flashback game here and there, yet, for all purposes, the outcome should be to cut him from the roster.

Yea, i worry about his reaction too. The other option is to sub Pau out 2-3 mins into the game like they did with Splitter sometimes and have Dedmon close out the game.

Never know though , Pau could see guys like Lee/Manu/Mills coming off the bench and embrace that role. Guess we'll see
