Spurs F Aldridge in hot streak as former Portland mates arrive

San Antonio forward LaMarcus Aldridge (http://www.espn.com/nba/player/_/id/2983/lamarcus-aldridge) looks to keep a recent torrid shooting stretch going against his former team when the Spurs battle the Portland Trail Blazers (http://www.espn.com/nba/team/_/name/por/portland-trail-blazers) on Friday at the AT&T Center in San Antonio, Texas.

Aldridge scored 27 points hit 10 of his 12 shots from the floor on Wednesday in the Spurs' 119-98 win over hapless Phoenix. That sterling offensive performance followed up a 15-for-20 shooting, season-high 33-point performance on Sunday in a victory against Chicago.

"Yeah, I've been in a good rhythm and just playing with some confidence," Aldridge said. My shot is going in and my teammates are doing a good job of finding me out there, so they make it easy on me. I'm just trying to be more involved. I'm trying to look for my shot more and it's been paying off."

The Spurs (26-6) won on Wednesday despite the absence of leading scorer and two-time defending NBA Defensive Player of the Year Kawhi Leonard (http://www.espn.com/nba/player/_/id/6450/kawhi-leonard), who was scratched due to illness just before the game. It was the first game Leonard missed this season.

Leonard is expected back in the lineup for Friday's game versus Portland. The Spurs have won three straight games and eight of their past 10 contests.

San Antonio continues to be one of the best and most consistent teams in the NBA. There are stretches in games when the Spurs seem to lose some of their focus -- like in the win against the Suns when they gave up 65 first-half points -- but San Antonio usually finds a way to get back in the groove. The Spurs allowed just 34 points in the second half on Wednesday as their defense went to work.

"The whole game for us was picking up the defensive pressure in the third and fourth quarters," San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich said. "That's what you have to have to be a good basketball team, so I was pleased with that. A lot of our passes were ridiculous and we were not very solid with the ball tonight in a lot of situations, which was disappointing."

Portland heads to the Alamo City off a 126-121 win at home against Sacramento on Wednesday that allowed the Trail Blazers (14-20) to end a six-game losing streak.

"It was good to get off the schneid," Trail Blazers coach Terry Stotts said after the win over the Kings. "We played a pretty solid game, start to finish. Our defense was solid."

Portland has lost 10 of it past 12 outings and has been forced to play its past two games without star guard Damian Lillard (http://www.espn.com/nba/player/_/id/6606/damian-lillard), who is nursing an ankle injury and whose availability is listed as day-to-day.
"We just need wins right now," Portland forward Mason Plumlee (http://www.espn.com/nba/player/_/id/2488653/mason-plumlee) said. "Home, road, whatever."

Guard C.J. McCollum (http://www.espn.com/nba/player/_/id/2490149/cj-mccollum) had a team-high 20 points for the Trail Blazers in the win versus the Kings while Maurice Harkless (http://www.espn.com/nba/player/_/id/6591/maurice-harkless) (12 points), Plumlee (12 points, 14 rebounds), Allen Crabbe (http://www.espn.com/nba/player/_/id/2531210/allen-crabbe) (13 points) and Evan Turner (http://www.espn.com/nba/player/_/id/4239/evan-turner) (11 points) all reached double figures for Portland.

The Spurs and Trail Blazers played in Portland a week ago with San Antonio handing the Trail Blazers a 110-90 defeat. Leonard scored a game-high 33 points and Patty Mills (http://www.espn.com/nba/player/_/id/4004/patty-mills) added 23 points off the bench.

The Spurs have won four consecutive games against Portland, its longest winning streak against the Trail Blazers since winning a franchise-best 12 straight games from April 12, 2005 to April 6, 2008. The Trail Blazers have failed to score 100 or more points in four of its past five games against the Spurs.

Game Preview: San Antonio Spurs vs. Portland Trailblazers

The Spurs look to close out a perfect homestand against the Blaze-less Blazers.

by PSherman42 (http://www.sbnation.com/users/PSherman42) Dec 30, 2016, 2:00am CST

The 2015-16 NBA season was bizarre for many reasons, and perhaps none are more notable than the Portland Trailblazers. After losing four of their five starters in the offseason, the Blazers were projected to freefall into a top lottery pick. About one year ago, this very much appeared to be the case, following a 128-108 blowout home loss to the Warriors (http://www.sbnation.com/nba/teams/golden-state-warriors) that brought Dame and Friends to a galling 15-24 record.

Then something weird happened. As if by some Christmas miracle, the Blazers could not miss from the field. Not for a game, or even a week, but for two whole months. Their scorching shooting helped them reach a 17-4 record from mid-January to March, including a marquee drubbing of the Warriors. This hot stretch propelled them five seeds up in the standings and put them in position to contend for home court advantage in the first round.

Perhaps that hot stretch set unrealistic expectations for this season; the Blazers have plunged back into mediocrity and currently maintain the 10th spot in the Western Conference. While their record does put them in an eerily similar position to last year, there is good reason to think that their weaknesses are now too often exploited to repeat last season's magical run.

Their struggles can largely be attributed to their porous defense that currently holds the worst defensive rating in the NBA (http://www.basketball-reference.com/leagues/NBA_2017.html#misc_stats::9). Some of the blame for this can be placed on injuries, as their best wing defender, Al-Farouq Aminu (http://www.sbnation.com/nba/players/111966/al-farouq-aminu), has missed significant time with back problems and their best defensive big, Festus Ezeli (http://www.sbnation.com/nba/players/157921/festus-ezeli), could require season-ending knee surgery. Of course even if these two stalwarts were playing, it wouldn't hide the fact that their dynamic duo of Damian Lillard (http://www.sbnation.com/nba/players/157963/damian-lillard) and CJ McCollum may be the worst defensive backcourt in the NBA.

And yet, this pair is nearly able to make up for their defensive flaws on the other end of the floor. You always have to be wary with these two; at any moment, a Lillard or McCollum jumper can spark a three-point barrage that keys a game-changing run. To get out of their current 2-9 rut, the Blazers will need this pair to do just that while limiting their defensive hemorrhaging. If they can't, expect a similar result to their last game against the Spurs.

Matchup to watch: Damian Lillard vs. Danny Green. The Spurs limited Dame to 16 points on 7-19 from the field in their matchup last week. The ankle injury he sustained against the Spurs has kept him out the last two games, so who knows how much he'll be able to play tonight (if at all). Lillard has torched San Antonio in the past, so -€” if he's healthy -€” I'd be surprised if we see him struggle to score again.

Vegas line: Spurs by 6.5

Game prediction: Spurs by 15.

KEYS TO THE GAME

Portland Trail Blazers

• C.J. McCollum to score over 30 points. In case Lillard is sidelined again, C.J. has to step up and play the leading role in his team’s offence. He scored only 16 points in the previous head-to-head meeting a few days ago but now will have to double these numbers if the Blazers want to win.

• Evan Turner’s contribution off the bench. If Lillard is unable to play. Turner will see increased minutes and could be deployed at point guard, due to his passing skills. He is also a solid shooter and can penetrate to the rim so he could play an important role in Portland’s offence.

San Antonio Spurs

• LaMarcus Aldridge’s hot hand. Although he struggled for the most of the season, Aldridge was a beast in last week as he averages 26.0 points and 10.3 rebounds per game. He had an excellent all-around performance against the Blazers recently when he recorded 18 points, 14 rebounds, six assists, and three steals. I think he can score 25-plus points in this one.

• Defensive stops on McCollum. It is evident that Portland will use C.J. as their primary offensive weapon when Lillard is not playing, and Gregg Popovich is well aware of it, so he will set strict marking on McCollum and will try to win the game by forcing him to take some tough shots.

SPURS ARE KINGS OF MID-RANGE AFTER 32 GAMES (http://thesportsdaily.com/project-spurs/spurs-are-kings-of-mid-range-after-32-games/)
Posted by Paul Garcia (http://thesportsdaily.com/author/24writer/) on December 30, 2016

Through 32 games, the San Antonio Spurs have the 5th most efficient offense in the NBA, as they’re scoring 109.8 Points per 100 Possessions. While the Spurs are the most accurate three point shooting team in the league with a percentage of 40.7%, they are right at the bottom of the league in generating points from the outside, as they only attempt 21.9 threes per game, ranked 29th in the NBA.

The Spurs also rank near the bottom of the league in generating points in the paint, as they’re only scoring 38.1 points per game from that area. With Kawhi Leonard and LaMarcus Aldridge’s ability to draw free throws, the Spurs get 17.6% of their points from the free throw line, which is ranked 11th in the league. So, now, let’s look at the mid-range. The Spurs get 20.6% of their points from that area, which is best in the league.

In an era where teams are zigging by going away from the mid-range shot and mainly seeking looks in the paint and outside, the Spurs are zagging, by embracing the non-paint two. With San Antonio seeking the mid-range shot, they’ve turned it into a weapon that has given them a Top-5 offense. So, who are some of the Spurs’ mid-range shot takers? There’s mainly six of the them on the team – Jonathon Simmons, Patty Mills, Leonard, Tony Parker, Pau Gasol and Aldridge. The chart below displays the Spurs’ core players who get more than 10% of their points from the mid-range and their mid-range shots per game.

Players
% of Points from Mid-Range
Mid-Range Attempts Per Game

Aldridge
35.8%
7.6

Gasol
35.3%
4.5

Parker
30.8%
3.5

Leonard
22.5%
6.0

Mills
14.8%
1.8

Simmons
14.1%
1.2

Let’s go back to overall team statistics. The Cleveland Cavaliers as a team shoot 39.0% from the mid-range, which is considered the league average mark. The Spurs are as a team attempts 25.6 mid-range shots per game (2nd most in NBA) and make 10.8 per game (Most in NBA). The six players above for the Spurs generate 24.6 of their 25.6 mid-range shots each night. In terms of accuracy, the Spurs knock down 42.3% of their shots from mid-range, ranked 5th best in the NBA and above league average.

So now, the next chart below shows you just how lethal some of the Spurs’ key mid-range shooters can be. Of their six players, only Simmons is shooting below league average from mid-range. Gasol is shooting almost 10% above league average, while Aldridge in his past two games has helped bring his percentage from below to above league average.

https://thebloguin.files.wordpress.com/2016/12/screenshot-171.png?w=640&h=320

With 39% of their season completed, the Spurs are showing that while the trend in the league is to go away from the mid-range shot, they’re the ones who are embracing it and still turning in an efficient product. Here’s something to consider though – over the last two seasons, the two teams who were last left standing in June were the Cleveland Cavaliers and Golden State Warriors. Both those teams in the past two regular seasons got less than 15% of their points from the mid-range and over 29% of their points from beyond the arc.

Can the Spurs earn a trip to the final stage in basketball using a different offensive method? That will be the question come April.

We don't know what the market could be for Lee. No one really wanted him last offseason due to his terrible reputation as an antiquated player, but he has looked great with the Spurs; he's also north of 30 so teams will be weary of giving him a long contract. 32 points in 18 minutes. It really looks like the scoring is the issue.

Not if you hold them to 26 it isn't.

Looking like the Spurs' only chance is for Manu to go HAM again. Team looks absolutely out of it (for the 17373748th time this season).

He would be the backup instead of Patty:wakeup

Now you have 2 guys in Porker and Payton who needs the ball in their hands to be “effective” in a team with 2 iso guys :wow

No. He's passing out from getting double-teamed.

I know we don’t have kawhi but this team should be good enough against a healthy portland, and they don’t have lillard.

Portland is the team playing small but they're getting every rebound.

Same pattern from last game, first half lull and they'll turn it up in the second half. These fuckers act like they're the defending champions. :lol

I now get why Bulls fans hated the guts of Pau despite putting numbers for them... pretty much the definition of empty calories if you don't watch his disgusting loafing..

Not if you hold them to 26 it isn't.

That's unrealistic. No one should be expected to hold a team to a 70ppg pace.
