Was a good game. Really bad refs, Kawhi/Mills struggled badly and still were in it with a good chance to win every step of the way.

He didn't use the glass, not sure if he thought that the clock was running out so he had to throw it up :bang

what a fucking choke. I wanted a 3. why the fuck go for a 2 on the road?
Man, Kawhi has a low, low bbIQ.
He had a great look. Not to mention Anderson put him in a poor spot with that pass (I think Patty was letting Kyle know that post game btw)
He had to abandon whatever was called in the TO and try and make something work

Looks like a good shot. I don't mind giving Kawhi every single opportunity in the RS to learn. We will need him to close out in the playoffs anyways.

Other than Kawhi being bad, I thought this game was a good sign for the Spurs. Tony, Aldridge, and even Pau had good/great games, and the Spurs need those guys to step it up if they want to challenge the Warriors; I'm not really worried about Kawhi in the long run.

What a bullshit, lucky "win" for the Hawks. Kawhi game winner rolls out, illegal screen to set up Hardaway wasn't called, and Kawhi was fouled on the last play.
And they're lucky Kawhi happened to be sick the last two games and was rusty.

Some worry about the lack of depth in the backcourt but it's the 2 bigs in crunch time that can't do the simplest things like grabbing boards. Gasol Aldridge always prone to soft plays when it matters

Playing well against the Hawks and playing well against the Warriors are two different things. If the Spurs played against the Warriors tonight like they did against the Hawks they'd lose by double digits.

Welp, when Patty and Kawhi play like butt the odds of winning go down. Spurs had plenty of opportunity in spite of them. Can't win them all I guess.
HarlemHeat37
01-01-2017, 08:58 PM
Good game, tbh, fun to watch..
Horrible officiating in the 4th and OT(including the egregious Hawks' game-tying 3) + Hardaway making everything + Spurs' shooters struggling, yet they lost by missing an easy shot that would have forced 2OT..

Ice009
01-01-2017, 09:01 PM
If you want a chance at the first seed, you can't play this poorly against average teams. Being down in the first half to two of the worst defensive in the league at home is not good Basketball. Spurs have played poorly lately.
anyway, I think they've thrown out their chances for the first seed and are now going to be fighting tooth and nail with Houston for the 2nd seed. I would not want to play the Rockets without homecourt advantage.

If that wasn't a 5 second violation, it was damn close. I don't even remember if the Spurs had another timeout. If they did, they should have called it and re-grouped. Atlanta came up with a great play to get their last look, and that's the best Pop could do?
I hate the fact that Pop didn't tell them to feed Kawhi to start OT, after that last shot he put up in regulation. I don't care if he had a bad game after being sick, he's still Kawhi.
I fucking hate that Pop didn't have Simmons in the game to play defense at the end, after he did so well at the end of regulation. Considering the Spurs were playing hero ball, the offense wouldn't have been much different with Simmons in. But the D would have, and that's where the Spurs got killed.

Name me some teams in NBA history that have won more games on the road in the playoffs than at home and won the Championship. That kind of thing can help, but you can't expect to win Championships without home court advantage. If the Spurs finish 3rd, then they might be in a situation where round 2, 3 and finals will be on the road. They're also playing against the Cavs for the 2nd overall seed, not just Houston.
That kind of thing is great in the regular season, but it won't translate as much in the playoffs when they're not playing against average teams on the road.

Tony gets tunnel vision when he's playing well and tries to be clutch. It usually doesn't work out in big games. It can in the regular season, but against good teams, it usually doesn't work out too well. Unfortunately, it didn't even work out against an average team. He played a great game up until the end.

Tony gets tunnel vision when he's playing well and tries to be clutch. It usually doesn't work out in big games. It can in the regular season, but against good teams, it usually doesn't work out too well. Unfortunately, it didn't even work out against an average team. He played a great game up until the end.

LOL, you're going to come back with this. They could have easily lost both of those games. The second win, you could even say they stole that from the jaws of defeat. Come on man. They were both great wins, but if any non-Spurs fans were watching those games, they could say the Spurs got lucky to win either one of them, let alone both. You think that is an indication they'll do well in Houston on the road in the playoffs? Two close wins they could have easily, easily lost?

They had a 16 point lead in the fourth quarter of the first game; it wasn't a game they snatched from the jaws of defeat. Not saying Houston won't be tough (if the Spurs even get that far) but they were in control of that first game for just about all of it.

He didn't "hero ball" the whole game. He played a great game up until the end where he "hero balled" the fuck out of it. Throughout his career, he's gotten away with it against average teams, but it normally fails in the playoffs against good teams that we've ended up losing to. That "hero balling" has contributed to series losses for the Spurs.
If you're going to talk about assists, why didn't he try and get the ball to LA instead of going 1 of 5 to finish?????? You know, LA, the guy that was having a great game and shooting the ball well when he got open looks. The guy that was swishing open shots. Could the point guard have actually tried getting him the ball? Could the PG have tried running plays to generate good looks for Aldridge? Could he have actually done that instead of trying to win the game himself by hero balling?
This is stupid, but you know that so it's not really worth discussing. It's pretty clear you dont actually watch the games. If you do, I would lie and say you didn't so that no one thinks you are actually evaluating a basketball game :lol
That post you quoted is a factual statement.
Basically, it took a much less than 100% Kawhi & Hardaway going off for a career high to pull off a miraculous home win.
Yeah, the funny thing is that I don't feel nearly as bad about this loss as I have some of the wins this season. They didn't dig themselves into an early hole. Kawhi clearly wasn't himself. And it still took a lot of things going the right way for Atlanta to squeak out the win at home.
It may not seem like it, but the Spurs lost that game at the end of the 3rd quarter. They were playing really good defense, and had built up a 10 point lead. They could have cut the Hawk's heart out right there. Pop made some substitutions I wasn't crazy about, and Atlanta made those three 3P's in a row to close the lead to 5 at the end of the quarter. After that, it was a horse race, and it shouldn't have been.

my thoughts exactly.
Dedmon is a foul magnet with no offensive skills.
That's not really fair, Bill. For the first couple of seasons, Tiago was more of a foul magnet than Dedmon. Diaw fouled just about as much as Dedmon, his first couple of NBA seasons, and was just about as offensively challenged (believe it or not). Hell, Millsap was MUCH more of a foul magnet than Dedmon for his first 5-6 seasons in the league.
At least he's not passive on defense, and for the most part he's played more controlled over the last month. in the last few games, he's made several smart fouls, when the defense broke down and it was foul or give up a freebie. (And they have missed some FT's that made those fouls look like the right thing to do.) When you're playing that few minutes, one more foul can change the per-36 number drastically.
I don't disagree that he still picks up some unnecessary fouls, or that he isn't a scoring threat on his own. But he's in there for defense, and he's been doing a respectable job of that. If you're comparing him to the average starting C in the league, he's not there. But you don't pick up those kinds of centers as UFA's, for small contracts.
The fact that people are even talking about Dedmon starting in place of Pau has a lot to do with Pau's lazy defense. I don't know if Dedmon could really work out as a starter this season, but I do think that Pau's defense is a big contributor to the early holes the Spurs have found themselves in.

Pau's a square peg trying to fit into a round hole in that starting lineup. He just doesn't fit. His defense and contested rebounding is just too poor. Not to even mention that he doesn't even box out. I hate to say this, but I would rather Kyle out there playing defense and trying to rebound in the same end of game situations. That's just how piss poor Gasol has been on the defensive end. I wish TD was out there instead.
It looks like the Spurs thought they were getting a replacement for Tim, but what they got instead was a square peg. It looks like a bad signing so far.

Again, it's OK that he's aggressive, but it's also all about balance. That's something he hasn't really learned. He gets tunnel vision when he's playing that well offensively. That's not a good trait to have for a PG. LA was very warm/hot from the field again tonight, and I don't think Tony looked for him enough at the end of the game. He got tunnel vision and tried to make plays for himself instead of someone like Aldridge who had the hot hand.

I was really proud of Pop earlier in the season for benching Pau late ibut keeping Pau out there was a death knell in the end. His horrific defense just doesn't make up for the offense his gives this team which is rather erratic. He has moments of defensive competence but way too many times does his lack of effort rear its ugly head. It's weird since you'd think Pop would despise those type of defensive lapses. The Simmons and Anderson subs at the very end of OT were also bizarre. Anderson's pass at the end was nearly a turnover.
I just don't get why Pau can't come off the bench. I am thinking the Spurs FO made a promise to Pau that he would be a starter no matter what as it's really hurting the team as having two of some of the worst defenders in the league with Pau and Parker is too much sometimes. You can't start a game where 40% of your starting lineup strikes joy into the heart of your opponents. Having Pau trying to defend the pick and roll is just sad, and other teams know it.

It's really amazing to me how much people are influenced and blinded by individual occurrences. Kawhi hit the 3 to tie it in regulation, but because his attack minded shot didn't fall (it rolled around the rim twice) he's shown some "choker" tendencies.
He's made plenty of big shots, went toe-to-toe with perhaps the best player ever in NBA history (Lebron in the finals) and won finals MVP.

I'm not overly perturbed by the loss. Your best player is still recovering from illness probably shouldn't have played,
a guy on their bench shooting .324 from 3 goes 6-7. and you lose in OT on the road. Things like this happen over 82 games.
By the way anybody have a gif of that screen on Manu at the end of regulation?
Just an NBA season loss against a decent squad that got a career game from a bench guy while the Spurs best player wasn't 100% and missed a layup to force 2OT. The viability and quality of the team is no different than if Kawhi makes a 3 and wins the game really. Spurs have had a some "flukish" wins and just got done in by the opposition having a flukish win, it happens.
Would be nice if it would happen to GSW though, 2.5 game lead or whatever it is is nothing yet, but if the Spurs get 3/4 games behind I don't see them having a chance of catching GSW.
:lol at calling Kawhi a choker.
He is standard Kawhi generally at the end of games, which is pretty spectacular.

Really choker of him.
Not to mention Kawhi was still suffering from the flu or its aftermath.

At the same time they act like the big 3 never "choked" themselves. Everyone misses big shots. Kawhi has actually been pretty clutch this season.

That last play was chaotic, timing was off, and nobody was setting any effective screens. Frankly, I wish Kawhi had just pulled up for about an 8-footer that was wide open rather than taking it all the way to the hole where things got congested.Honestly it was a great move but he just didnt have that soft touch to put it in.
