View Full Version : White House fails to make case that Russian hackers tampered with election

Talk about disappointments. The US government's much-anticipated analysis of Russian-sponsored hacking operations provides almost none of the promised evidence linking them to breaches that the Obama administration claims were orchestrated in an attempt to interfere with the 2016 presidential election.

The 13-page report, which was jointly published Thursday (https://www.us-cert.gov/sites/default/files/publications/JAR_16-20296A_GRIZZLY%20STEPPE-2016-1229.pdf) by the Department of Homeland Security and the FBI, billed itself as an indictment of sorts that would finally lay out the intelligence community's case that Russian government operatives carried out hacks on the Democratic National Committee (http://arstechnica.com/security/2016/06/hackers-invade-dems-servers-steal-entire-trump-opposition-file/), the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (http://arstechnica.com/security/2016/07/democratic-partys-congressional-fundraising-committee-was-also-hacked/), and Clinton Campaign Chief John Podesta (http://arstechnica.com/security/2016/10/russia-linked-phishing-campaign-behind-the-dnc-breach-also-hit-podesta-powell/) and leaked much of the resulting material. While security companies in the private sector have said for months the hacking campaign was the work of people working for the Russian government, anonymous people tied to the leaks have claimed they are lone wolves (http://arstechnica.com/security/2016/06/lone-wolf-claims-responsibility-for-dnc-hack-dumps-purported-trump-smear-file/). Many independent security experts said there was little way to know the true origins of the attacks.

Sadly, the JAR, as the Joint Analysis Report is called, does little to end the debate. Instead of providing smoking guns that the Russian government was behind specific hacks, it largely restates previous private-sector claims without providing any support for their validity. Even worse, it provides an effective bait and switch by promising newly declassified intelligence into Russian hackers' "tradecraft and techniques" and instead delivering generic methods carried out by just about all state-sponsored hacking groups.

Obama often cites numbers like these while boasting about his tenure in the White House: 15 million new jobs, a 4.9 per cent unemployment rate and 74 months of consecutive job growth.

But one number almost always goes unheard: more than 1,030 seats.

That's the number of spots in state legislatures, governor's mansions and Congress lost by Democrats during Obama's presidency.

The statistic reveals an unexpected twist of the Obama years: the leadership of the former community organizer was rough on the grassroots of his own party.

The Democratic Party has languished in Obama's shadow for years and is now searching for itself.
'What's happened on the ground is that voters have been punishing Democrats for eight solid years — it's been exhausting,' South Carolina state Senator Vincent Sheheen said. He lost two gubernatorial campaigns to Nikki Haley, President-elect Donald Trump's pick for ambassador to the UN.

'If I was talking about a local or state issue, voters would always lapse back into a national topic: Barack Obama.'

Obama's election was heralded as a moment of Democratic dominance — the crashing of a conservative wave that had swept the country since the dawn of the Reagan era.

Democrats believed that the coalition of young, minority and female voters who swept Obama into the White House would usher in something new: an ascendant Democratic majority that would ensure party gains for decades to come.

The coalition, it turns out, was Obama's alone.

After this year's elections, Democrats hold the governor's office and both legislative chambers in just five coastal states: Oregon, California, Connecticut, Rhode Island and Delaware. Republicans have the trifecta in 25, giving them control of a broad swath of the middle of the country.

Why is the narrative that the Russians hacked the elections? The DNC/DCCC/Podesta were the ones that were hacked.

Nice story, but it isn't proof.

How many hackers might copy some other hackers signature?

Yeah, probably worse since McCain is more entrenched. I regret voting for that loser. Both are also protected from serious criticism, Obama with his skin color and McCain because he's a :cry POW.

This Russia thing is basically the Democrats' own version of pizzagate. The evidence is thin as it gets, yet people talk about Russia hacking the election with absolute certainty.

It's an obvious ploy to distract mainstream dems from how much they should despise the Clintons at this point.

If these motherfuckers start pushing Clinton again in 2020. She needs to retire, or die, get alzheimers, whatever to purge that cancer from our political scene. Everyone was already scared of running against her this time which is why her only competition for the nomination came from outside the party with Sanders.

If Trump starts getting even more unpopular by the end of his term I could see it. Clinton has been the party's chosen one since 2007. It took the Dems most popular nominee since what, Roosevelt, to knock her off that perch in 2008.

I don't see any way Shillary herself runs again in 2020, but I can definitely see them dress a Clinton pawn like Warren up as a grass roots progressive and as the new chosen candidate.

Heck, they're already trying to set Chelsea Clinton up with a NY congressional seat.

Yup. They're looking desperately for a smoking gun to find before inauguration day but they're isn't one. They're in denial about the narrative that Shillary simply lost fair and square.

Hillary Clinton had the second lowest approval rating of any major Presidential candidate in modern times and the legitimacy of her candidacy has been called into question since the DNC leaks. If she ran again, it would be suicide for the Democratic party.

There is absolutely zero chance that it happens.

I started blaming a few computer glitches at work on the Russians hacking us, and all my coworkers get a great laugh at it.

It seems pretty common that so many people of both the left and right see the Russians blamed for the DNC hacking as silly.
