Fantastic video. I'm surprised no team wanted to pick him up as an end of bench guy. He actually still has some game, and helps take wear and tear off any playoff roster.

Great guy and amazing shooter. Drew a lot of ire around here at times, even from myself, but he always did anything and everything that was asked of him to the best of his ability. He was a great professional and a true Spur.

He can sit home with his millions, hot wife, 2 championship rings and frankly it couldn't happen to a nicer guy. Any role player whose shooting gravity can affect the WCF has done his job.

Hats off to you Matty. The Red Rocket is grounded. He is very personable. He should try and become the new Craig Saiger on the sidelines

In Spurs history, Matt Bonner is 8th in games played (632), 4th in 3PTM (656) and 3PTA (1588), 5th in 3PT% (.413), and 10th in True Shooting Percentage (.584). He authored the 2nd best three point percentage shooting season in Spurs history in 2010-11 (.457) and still has the #1 Offensive Rating season in Spurs history in 2008-09 (122.9). He's also 6th in franchise history in playoff games (94).

Matt Bonner was a lot of things (and he was not a lot of things), but he was always ready and did whatever he was asked to do to help the club. He missed a lot of shots (and rebounds) and struggled mightily at times when the bright lights of the playoffs came on -- when he was usually overmatched -- but even when things weren't going his way, he continued to play hard. His ability to step into the starting lineup in the 2014 WCF and then to knock out even a couple of 3's in the hostile environment of Game 6 at Chesapeake was important to the Spurs' last title. He frustrated a lot of people, but was a good culture guy for the club and leaves a positive legacy, at least to me, as he leaves the game.

I suspect he'll do well for himself in retirement. I hope he does.

Great guy. As a sharpshooting role player, and an energy guy off the bench, he was great. He would come into the game, pop a 3 or two, and maybe steal a couple of rebounds, and change the momentum. He deserved to get paid, and he was in demand. But I think the higher salary (and cap) made them feel like he had to have an upgraded role. It didn't do him or the team any favors. A lot of the hate around here has to do with the expectations of him as a starting big. He also had a couple of nasty leg/foot injuries that changed his stroke. The difference between a decent 3P shooter and a great 3P shooter is pretty slim. After the injuries, he was never a great 3P shooter again.

He will be great as an analyst, and I expected the Spurs organization to find a way to keep him around. Good news all the way around.

Let's face it, Matt during his later years wasn't the best on-the-court guy. But he was definitely a great locker room guy, off the court guy. He was the definition of a Spur. Never complained about playing time. Never demanded a trade or anything. He knew his role. If they retire his jersey, it's because he personifies what it means to wear a Spurs jersey.

The Bonner hate really calmed down after about 2012 tbh, at least from most reasonable Spurs fans. I think we can all agree that he was a nice piece to have coming off the bench. He probably never should have been a starter in the NBA, but that's more an indictment on Pop fantasizing him as Horry 2.0 than it is Bonner.

Why? He was a very, very average player. Why have an appreciation night?

Looking at averages doesn't say much when considering a highly specialized player. There's one thing he knew how to do well and he really excelled at it. So yeah his numbers are rather average (basically a 6 & 3 roleplayer) but he was a sharpshooter and and there's no denying that. In this sense a guy who managed to finish a season with the best 3P% in the league can't be that average. He's ranked #14 all-time in 3P%. Let's not confuse one-dimensional and average.

I really loved his retirement video, it seems in line with who he is. He did his job well, it's not his fault if Pop was overplaying him and making him a starter. He has a great personality, was a fan favorite and definitely deserves an appreciation night in my book.

Being one-dimensional pretty much does make you average at best, especially if you're an unathletic, slow big man with awkward movement. Even his shooting stroke was flawed because his release point was in front of his body, which many cited as the reason why he wasn't effective in the playoffs when defenders close out on shooters faster.

He was a smart player, I'll give him that. He probably knew and executed plays in textbook fashion. Unfortunately, the NBA is a game of athleticism and versatility. Matt would be a legend in other leagues, perhaps, but he was a below-average NBA player.

He's the most 'overrated' underrated Spur of all time.

Great video. Going out with style.

Matt helped define, validate and prove a position, that virtually all teams now use, which is more than most players have achieved in their careers.

Amazing news that he's joining the Spurs broadcast. He'll fit in great.

I'm glad no one will be picking him up. He is a Spur. He played what 9 or 10 seasons for SA? Hard to believe he was able to stick around so long.

No one wanted him.

Pretty easy to believe he was here for that long, actually:

He played his role, never complained, unselfish, was a great locker room presence.

My favorite moment in a Spurs uniform is when Parker an Bonner are wrestling for a rebound an Bonner attempts to hand Parker the ball after realizing whom he was wrestling with. Parker refuses the ball and in Matty fashion he takes the ball down the court as the point calling the set down court.

Look forward to Jan. 10th.

His defense would be better than gasol's
His salary would be much better than gasol's
His reduced minutes would give more opportunity to Dedmon, Lee, Bertans, and Slomo...

Solid player that was played in the wrong era, tbh..a true stretch big that helped bring a new wave of basketball..

While I don't actually feel bad for them, since they are rich and probably happy(in Bonner's case), the legacies of White American basketball players of the current and past generations would be viewed so differently had they played in the 80s and 90s(when the league consisted of 30%+ White American)..they would have had less of a competitive disadvantage playing against the type of players that have become obsolete..

A player like Bonner, who built a nice career, would have been viewed as a God during those days..

It's an easy choice, though..if I'm Chandler Parsons, I'm taking my 200 million $ career earnings over being viewed as Larry Bird(had Parsons played in the 80s):lol

I've always said that if you believe Larry Bird's dominance was legitimate, you also probably believed that Air Bud was a dominant player, as well..

Dominance, no. But you always take this shit too far. Bird was fucking good, no matter what he looked like. I don't know how old you were, but did you actually watch him during the '85, '86, '87 Finals? Anybody who says he dominated is full of shit, because he didn't dominate Magic. But sonofabitch - he was good. Nobody gave them a pass to get to three Finals in a row. And the Lakers (and Rockets) didn't just allow him to pile up those kinds of numbers against them.
