Trump administration orders media blackout at EPA
http://www.latimes.com/politics/washington/la-na-trailguide-updates-trump-administration-orders-media-1485281190-htmlstory.html

The Trump administration has instituted a media blackout at the Environmental Protection Agency and barred staff from awarding any new contracts or grants.

Emails sent to EPA staff since President Trump's inauguration on Friday and reviewed by the Associated Press detailed the specific prohibitions banning news releases, blog updates or posts to the agency's social media accounts.

The Trump administration has also ordered a "temporary suspension" of all new business activities at the department, including issuing task orders or work assignments to EPA contractors. The orders are expected to have a significant and immediate impact on EPA activities nationwide.

Similar orders barring external communications have been issued by the Trump administration at other federal agencies in recent days, including the Agriculture and Interior departments.

USDA science researchers ordered to stop publishing news releases, other documents
https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/post-politics/wp/2017/01/24/usda-science-researchers-ordered-to-stop-publishing-news-releases-other-documents/?utm_term=.c2c65f4218fb

Employees of the scientific research arm at the Agriculture Department were ordered Monday to cease publication of “outward facing” documents and news releases, raising concerns that the Trump administration was seeking to influence distribution of their findings.

“Starting immediately and until further notice, [the Agricultural Research Service] will not release any public-facing documents. This includes, but is not limited to, news releases, photos, fact sheets, news feeds, and social media content,” wrote ARS chief Sharon Drumm in an email to employees.

Department officials scrambled to clarify the memo Tuesday afternoon, after intense public scrutiny and media requests, stating that ARS had not “blacked out public information” and adding that scientific articles published through professional peer-reviewed journals have not been banned. Such a decree would have conflicted with established scientific integrity standards and previous media guidance “encouraging, but not requiring, USDA scientists to communicate with the media about their scientific findings.”

“As the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s chief scientific in-house research agency, ARS values and is committed to maintaining the free flow of information between our scientists and the American public as we strive to find solutions to agricultural problems affecting America,” ARS said in a statement to The Washington Post Tuesday afternoon, seeking to clarify the scope of the memo.

The original guidance — which specifically bans news releases and social-media content — remains intact.

Some Fake News Publishers Just Happen to Be Donald Trump’s Cronies
https://theintercept.com/2016/11/26/laura-ingraham-lifezette/

Laura Ingraham, a close Trump ally currently under consideration to be Trump’s White House press secretary, owns an online publisher called Ingraham Media Group that runs a number of sites, including LifeZette, a news site that frequently posts articles of dubious veracity. One video produced by LifeZette this summer, ominously titled “Clinton Body Count,” promoted a conspiracy theory that the Clinton family had some role in the plane crash death of John F. Kennedy, Jr., as well as the deaths of various friends and Democrats.

The video, published on Facebook from LifeZette’s verified news account, garnered over 400,000 shares and 14 million views.

Another LifeZette video, picking up false claims from other sites, claimed that voting machines “might be compromised” because a voting machine company called Smartmatic, allegedly providing voting machines “in sixteen states,” was purchased by the liberal billionaire George Soros. Soros never purchased the company, and Smartmatic did not provide voting machines used in the general election.

One LifeZette article misleadingly claimed that the United Nations backed a “secret” Obama administration takeover of local police departments. The article referenced Justice Department orders that a select few police departments address patterns of misconduct, a practice that, in reality, long predates the Obama presidency, is hardly secret, and had no relation to the United Nations.

Another LifeZette article, which went viral in the week prior to the election, falsely claimed that Wikileaks had revealed that a senior Hillary Clinton campaign official had engaged in occult rituals. Ingraham’s site regularly receives links from the Drudge Report and other powerful drivers of Internet traffic.

Wednesday morning, comin' down:::

U.S. President Donald Trump is expected to sign several executive orders on Wednesday restricting immigration from Syria and six other Middle Eastern or African countries, according to several congressional aides and immigration experts briefed on the matter.
In addition to Syria, Trump's orders are expected to temporarily restrict access to the United States for most refugees. Another order will block visas from being issued to Iraq, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen, said the aides and experts, who asked not to be identified.
Trump's restrictions on refugees are likely to include a multi-month ban on admissions from all countries until the State Department and the Department of Homeland Security can increase the intensity of the vetting process.
The Republican president was expected to sign the orders at the Washington headquarters of the Department of Homeland Security, whose responsibilities include immigration and border security.
On the campaign trail, Trump initially proposed a temporary ban on Muslims entering the United States to protect Americans from jihadist attacks. Many Trump supporters decried Democratic President Barack Obama's decision to increase the number of Syrian refugees admitted to the United States over fears that those fleeing the country's civil war would carry out attacks.
Both Trump and his nominee for attorney general, U.S. Senator Jeff Sessions, have since said they would focus the restrictions on countries whose emigres could pose a threat rather than placing a ban on people who follow a specific religion.
To block entry from the designated countries, Trump is likely to instruct the U.S. State Department to stop issuing visas to people from those nations, according to sources familiar with the visa process. He could also instruct U.S. Customs and Border Protection to stop any current visa holders from those countries from entering the United States.
White House spokesman Sean Spicer said on Tuesday that the State and Homeland Security departments would work on the vetting process once Trump's nominee to head the State Department, Rex Tillerson, is installed.
Other measures may include directing all agencies to finish work on a biometric identification system for non-citizens entering and exiting the United States and a crackdown on immigrants fraudulently receiving government benefits, according to the congressional aides and immigration experts.
To restrict illegal immigration, Trump has promised to build a wall on the U.S.-Mexico border and to deport illegal migrants living inside the United States. None of the orders to be signed Wednesday are expected to focus on those issues.

Trump is also expected to swear in his new secretary of homeland security, retired Marine General John Kelly, on Wednesday.

It's no accident that the fight over multibillion-dollar cuts to every government agency sounds a lot like cuts hitting one agency — the Pentagon.

National Parks Are Tweeting Climate Science After Trump Gags EPA

Refusing to be silenced by President Trump, some of America’s national parks have been tweeting about climate change.

While this might sound pedestrian (and it should), most Twitter handles managed by the National Park Service haven’t mentioned the topic since Trump staffers temporarily gagged the Department of the Interior account (https://www.nytimes.com/2017/01/21/us/national-park-service-trump-tweet.html?_r=2) for retweeting photos of his meager inauguration turnout.

The fear inside the agency is palpable; especially since Trump issued an edict (http://thehill.com/policy/energy-environment/315876-trump-bans-epa-employees-from-giving-social-media-updates) banning Environmental Protection Agency employees from sharing information on social media.

But today, some brave souls at Badlands National Park (https://twitter.com/BadlandsNPS) in South Dakota, and Golden Gate National Recreation Area (https://twitter.com/GoldenGateNPS) in California, decided to tweet truth to power.

Over the course of a few hours, the Badlands National Park Twitter account shared a series of facts about atmospheric carbon dioxide and ocean acidification. While the term “climate change” was never mentioned, the intent of the tweets was self-evident: Man-made activity is the primary driver of climate change.

From Russia with love: How Donald Trump uses Kremlin propaganda techniques against the American people

Whatever the truth is about Trump and Putin, Trump's political rise was built on Russian-style propaganda

Writing at Small Wars Journal, Roman Skaskiw has highlighted (http://smallwarsjournal.com/jrnl/art/nine-lessons-of-russian-propaganda) the following core principles of Russian propaganda:

Rely on dissenting political groups in Western countries for dissemination.
Domestic propaganda is most important.
Destroy and ridicule the idea of truth.
“Putin is strong. Russia is strong.”
Headlines are more important than reality, especially while first impressions are forming.
Demoralize.
Move the conversation.
Pollute the information space.
Gas lighting — accuse the enemy of doing what you are doing to confuse the conversation.

Trump and his spokespeople

appeal to “alternative facts (http://money.cnn.com/2017/01/22/media/alternative-facts-donald-trump/index.html),”

employ fake news and other forms of disinformation (http://www.salon.com/2017/01/24/sean-spicer-back-on-message-reality-isnt-real-and-we-should-all-pity-poor-donald-trump/),

exploit and amplify dissent between the Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders factions of the Democratic Party and

deploy Orwellian Newspeak (http://www.salon.com/2016/11/21/the-normalization-of-donald-trump-began-in-1984-how-george-orwells-newspeak-has-infected-the-news-media/).

The Trump team promotes a dystopian and apocalyptic vision of America where only the Great Leader with his supposed strength and virility can successfully intervene,

and displays blatant disregard for its campaign promises.

Trump’s people use Twitter and other social media

to cause controversy and distraction, as well as

to spread bullying behavior and insults, threats of violence against his political rivals,

militant nationalism and

conspiracy theories about “illegal” voters.

All of this represents a direct application of Russian propaganda strategies to American politics.

strategy for manipulating the public and news media would not be effective, however, if a pre-existing superstructure was not already in place.

In the United States, this takes the form of a right-wing news-entertainment system that is anchored by Fox News and whose tendrils include talk radio and a vast internet propaganda operation.

Trump’s use of Russian propaganda techniques is also made viable because of a nationwide decline in critical thinking skills, coupled with a 20-year growth in authoritarian values among conservatives, right-leaning independents and Republicans.

But for all their cynicism, the spin doctors and political technologists were, at this point, still trying to pull off an illusion of the truth.

Their stories were meant to be coherent, even if they were low on facts. When reality caught up — the audience caught on to the illusion in Moscow and the stories about Iraq broke down and the stock market crashed —

one reaction has been to double down, to deny that facts matter at all, to make a fetish out of not caring about them.

This has many benefits for rulers — and is a relief for voters.

Putin doesn’t need to have a more convincing story,

he just has to make it clear that everybody lies,

undermine the moral superiority of his enemies and

convince his people there is no alternative to him.

“When Putin lies brazenly he wants the West to point out that he lies,” says the Bulgarian political scientist Ivan Krastev, “so he can point back and say, ‘but you lie too.'”

And if everyone is lying then anything goes, whether it’s in your personal life or in invading foreign countries.

This is a (dark) joy. All the madness you feel, you can now let it out and it’s okay.

The very point of Trump is

to validate the pleasure of spouting shit,

the joy of pure emotion,

often anger, without any sense.

And an audience which has already spent a decade living without facts can now indulge in a full, anarchic liberation from coherence.

Website given first question at Trump press conference scrubs video calling Clintons muderers

White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer gave his first question during Tuesday’s press conference to a reporter from Lifezette, a news and opinion site that pushed a debunked claim alleging Bill and Hillary Clinton murdered their political foes.

The site, founded by conservative radio host Laura Ingraham, recently scrubbed referenced to the video, which claimed the former President and Secretary of State murdered several people who threatened their political aspirations,

Similarly, Ingraham’s site removed an article about the “Clinton Curse” which claimed it is “hard to deny that being close with the Clintons could kill you,” according to Right Wing Watch.

Trump administration tells EPA to cut climate page from website: sources
http://mobile.reuters.com/article/idUSKBN15906G

By Valerie Volcovici | WASHINGTON

U.S. President Donald Trump's administration has instructed the Environmental Protection Agency to remove the climate change page from its website, two agency employees told Reuters, the latest move by the newly minted leadership to erase ex-President Barack Obama's climate change initiatives.

The employees were notified by EPA officials on Tuesday that the administration had instructed EPA's communications team to remove the website's climate change page, which contains links to scientific global warming research, as well as detailed data on emissions. The page could go down as early as Wednesday, the sources said.

"If the website goes dark, years of work we have done on climate change will disappear," one of the EPA staffers told Reuters, who added some employees were scrambling to save some of the information housed on the website, or convince the Trump administration to preserve parts of it.

The sources asked not to be named because they were not authorized to speak to the media.

A Trump administration official did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

House GOP quietly closes investigation into Flint water crisis
http://www.pbs.org/newshour/rundown/house-gop-quietly-closes-flint-mich-water-investigation/

While the Republican chairman signaled the apparent conclusion of the inquiry — Congress ended its session last week for a three-week holiday break — the panel’s senior Democrat insisted the investigation continues and accused Michigan’s Republican governor of stonewalling the committee over documents related to the Flint water crisis.

Rep. Elijah Cummings of Maryland, senior Democrat on the oversight panel, said he wants Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder to produce key Flint-related documents within 30 days. Cummings said Snyder and his administration have obstructed the committee’s investigation into the Flint crisis for a year, refusing to provide — or even search for — key documents.

Snyder’s intransigence has thwarted committee efforts to answer critical questions about what he knew as the crisis unfolded and why he didn’t act sooner to fix Flint’s water problem, Cummings said.

“Requiring Governor Snyder to finally comply with the committee’s request will allow us to complete our investigation and offer concrete findings and recommendations to help prevent a catastrophe like this from happening again,” Cummings wrote to Chaffetz. “In contrast, allowing Governor Snyder to flout the committee’s authority will deny the people of Flint the answers they deserve.”

It’s highly unlikely Republicans who control Congress will continue the inquiry next year.

A little more than a useful idiot. Seems he'll use the ridiculous and staged shenanigans to distract the media and American populace while he ramrods a pretty hardcore conservative agenda through congress.

We'll see what comes of this populist agenda. As we've already seen with his proposal to implement congressional term limits, congress can pretty much curb anything they vehemently oppose with little opposition from Donald.

But, how much can they take? How much will they take? They don't want to end up like Christie, with that look upon his face. It has less to do with this EPA thing or any other individual story and more to do with the fact that the left is quickly becoming the boy who cried wolf. When everything Trump says and does is spun as "proof" that he's Hitler 2.0, even legitimate criticisms of the job he's doing will soon fall on deaf ears. George Orwell's '1984' Tops Amazon's Bestseller List

Sales of George Orwell's dystopian drama 1984 have soared after Kellyanne Conway, adviser to the reality-TV-star-turned-president, Donald Trump, used the phrase "alternative facts" in an interview. As of Tuesday, the book was the sixth best-selling book on Amazon (https://www.amazon.com/best-sellers-books-Amazon/zgbs/books?mc_cid=c39c026f87&mc_eid=10fb55032a). Comparisons were made with the term "newspeak" used in the 1949 novel, which was used to signal a fictional language that aims at eliminating personal thought and also "doublethink (https://www.theguardian.com/books/2017/jan/24/george-orwell-1984-sales-surge-kellyanne-conway-alternative-facts)." In the book Orwell writes that it "means the power of holding two contradictory beliefs in one's mind simultaneously, and accepting both of them." The connection was initially made on CNN's Reliable Sources (http://money.cnn.com/2017/01/22/media/alternative-facts-donald-trump/). "Alternative facts is a George Orwell phrase," said Washington Post reporter Karen Tumulty. Conway's use of the term was in reference to White House press secretary Sean Spicer's comments about last week's inauguration attracting "the largest audience ever". Her interview was widely criticized and she was sub-tweeted by Merriam-Webster dictionary (https://twitter.com/MerriamWebster/status/823221915171061760) with a definition of the word fact. In 1984, a superstate wields extreme control over the people and persecutes any form of independent thought. UPDATE 1/24/17 6:56PM PST: Orwell's dystopian novel is now the #1 Best Seller in Books on Amazon.

I don't recall liberals frothing at the mouth like this over Obama's :cry War on Information. :cry

It's no accident that the fight over multibillion-dollar cuts to every government agency sounds a lot like cuts hitting one agency — the Pentagon.

The reason: It hasn't been a fair fight.

Top officials at three domestic agencies say they were instructed by the White House not to talk about the looming sequester cuts unless their talking points were first cleared by the Office of Management and Budget.

The direction from the White House so infuriated Senate Appropriations Committee Chairwoman Barbara Mikulski that she’s planning a hearing next Thursday to give domestic agencies a chance to make their case by inviting officials from OMB, Treasury, Health and Human Services, Education, Housing and Urban Development and Homeland Security.

"It's been under a gag order," the Maryland Democrat said of President Barack Obama's Cabinet to POLITICO. "I'm against gag rules."

I came across this interview, very interesting. It's from a silicon Valley / big data type, it's very long because they broach several subjects but part is about political campaigns and how they are using IT, AI and data from social networks / cell phones / email etc to target people. He basically says that Obama pioneered it and Trump took it to the next level. Problem is it's in Spanish and I don't have time to translate, maybe later or someone wants to take a stab at it.
