What's unncessary is limiting this.

You have any idea at all just how many old songs have been covered? And a lot of time the fact it is a cover isn't even known.

Example

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X6M_gm5yNDU

For years I had no idea that was a cover of an old 1933 Clarence Ashley record.

That's a cheap song to cover. But the best cover of that I've seen was yep...on American Idol...she gets after it in the end.

I was going to make a smart ass comment about "most". I had no idea Mike Starr dieded. In reality, there were 2 members to AIC. Staley and Cantrell. The new singer sounds just like Layne Staley but tbh, I can't get around it. Some of Cantrells solo stuff was pretty cool.

Talking covers.

One of Hank Williams biggest hits was "Lovesick Blues'. That was a cover of a 1927 Emmitt Miller (performed in black face) tune.

The first song Elvis ever recorded was "That's Alright Mama", that was a cover of 1940's bluesman Big Boy Crudup. "Hound Dog" a Big Mama Thornton tune.

The Stones, Led Zeppelin covered a number of old blues tunes.

The music of Robert Johnson a 1930's blues legend has been covered by too many to mention.

Dale Hawkins recorded the original.

I was joking around at first but for great covers, I think that some top 10's were mentioned.
Joe Cocker : The Letter
Hendrix : All Along the Watchtower
Buckley : Hallelujah

I think Bene's submission of Dream On was cool.
I think the cover of Slaves and Bulldozers was impressive.
And I think the chick above has super cool guitar chops even though her voice is pretty generic.

And I think the kids cover of hallelujah was awesome.

Those six covers above, the original artist.

1.Blind Willie Reynolds
2.Blind Willie Mctell
3.Big Mama Thornton
4.Sonny Boy Williamson....a true classic
5.Memphis Minnie & Kansas Joe McCoy
6.Roy Acuff

Big Joe Willams first recorded "Crawling Kingsnake" then here came Tony Hollins, some years later John Lee Hooker, then there was.................

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K5cwmZxW0Jc

Some of the most covered of all songs.

Pretty Polly
Stack 0' Lee/Stagger Lee
Frankie & Johnny
Good Morning Little School Girl
House of the Rising Sun
Baby Please Don't Go

Howlin' Wolf first recorded this, the Stones nail it.....

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nw64KvJXiPk

Larry Davis was pretty much just a local player in Houston. But he did have his 15 minutes (more like 3) when he recorded "Texas Flood". Yep........

Boz Scaggs covering the Fenton Robinson classic..............(this is so damn good it almost hurts)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oTFvAvsHC_Y

Big Joe Williams was the classic guitar across his back (twelve string) wandering bluesman from Mississippi. He hoboed/rode the blinds up into St. Louis. He hung around there for some time. In 1935 he and and a washboard band recorded what would become one of the most covered tunes of all, "Baby Please Don't Go". Obviously he never had a clue of the impact he made, he didn't live long enought.

That was a cover of a 1955 tune with some debate over just who recorded the very first "Unchained Melody" sure I could probably find out but too lazy, so here is one of those who in 1955........................

^His original begged to be drawn out as the Cover did. One immediately recognized that it was wholly inadequate at birth. Running it on a cassette, or, the Greatest Hits CD left one to check the run time (3:17) on the jewel case notes for confirmation that he'd miscalculated his work. To bow to radio parameters made for a vulgar presentation as it fades out. There's more but we were forbidden to hear, and one felt cheated even embarrassed driving about in the automobile.

The Cover makes it whole, and enshrines BMW into the ages.

spurraider21 gets it. Good submissions. I don't care much for Cum on Feel the Noise. Some would dispute if VH was better than the Kinks. But I agree. Speaking of VH, I'd also throw out, You're No Good. That ones even more debatable imo. But I still prefer the VH version barely. Now that I say that, I change my mind. Sometime I so crazy.

Jimi Hendrix's cover of Hey Joe is pretty great, the live version at Monterrey is the definitive version to me.

Hearing him sing "Ain't no hang man gonna but a rope around me!" is one of my favorite parts, it takes on a different meaning when a black man sings it, especially in front of an all white audience in the mid '60's

Ok. Shit. Let's limit it to one per artist. You're right though. Hendrix owned that song. It's debatable, but imo, Watchtower is more iconic.

SpursforSix

So far I think the top spots are locked in .

Hendrix : All Along the Watchtower
Joe Cocker : The Letter

After that I have :
Buckley Hallelujah
Van Halen : You Really Got Me

The second two are debatable. Hallelujah has been done so many times and done very well. And the Kinks original of YRGM stands on its own.

I once did this on a track & field forum.

I took every school that could fill 8 lanes with quality (sub 9.5/10.30) sprinters.

Texas Southern

lane

1.Henry Neal
2.Augustine Olobia Nigeria
3.Willie Polk
4.Jimmy Hines...first sub10.00
5.Robert Taylor
6.Renaldo Dawson
7.Michael Miller
8.Homer Jones....first NFLer to spike the ball

I did that for over 70 schools. Guy comes on....."ya spelled.....wrong"....hahahahaha~~~~~~~~~

Dude, you can roam the internet and will never find anyone who knows music more than I do, trust me.

What do you think...."Who would have thunk it"...meant? Now think stupid, ok? How come out of the dozen or so videos I have in this thread that was the only one I ....."Who would have thunk it".....well? I am assuming everyone here knows my music knowledge.

Speaking of music.....

Robert Johnson recorded 29 songs, some in 1936 in San Antonio and some others in 1937 in Dallas. All of that can be found on THE COMPLETE RECORDINGS.....or we thought. Some years ago another take (a lot of his songs had two takes) of...Traveling Riverside Blues (Zeppelin covered it) was found.

I buy my dogs food right around the corner from a thrift shop, so once a month.....

Yep, I now own everything Robert Johnson ever recorded......life is good. But, I didn't know I'd found that lost version until I started listening, it was a little different especially when Robert says......till the juice runs down my leg.

All the below have covered Robert Johnson...

Steve Miller
Delaney & Bonnie
Allman Brothers
Eric Clapton
Cream
Alvin Lee
Lynyrd Skynard
Mountain
Sting
Steven Stills
Fleetwod Mac
Rolling Stones
Foghat
Led Zeppelin
John Hammond
Keb Mo
Grateful Dead
Alvin Youngblood Hart
R.E.M
Warren Zevon
Robert Palmer

Tell me stupid, why did I say....Who would have thunk it?....why did I say that, well?

Stupid, do you really think a guy who has been into Clapton since his John Mayall days and Marley since his teenage days doesn't know all about them?

It wasn't real obvious I was talking about how a Brit guitar player in Clapton would cover a tune written by a reggae star? Did I really have to explain what I assumed was......WHO WOULD HAVE THUNK IT.....are you kidding me?

Dude, when it comes to music I don't make mistakes, got it?

I assumed everyone is familiar with Claptons version, wasn't sure that could be said about Marley, ok ya with me little guy? So how unusual is it for a British guitar player to cover a tune by a reggae star, like...............WHO WOULD HAVE THUNK IT? What other reason could there be to single out that....one....video? How come I only said...WHO WOULD HAVE THUNK IT...there? Now think ya little shit, ok?

I should have known better to assume things "HERE" I suppose.

Dude, ya work sooooooooooooooooo damn hard at this it's comical. hahahaha~~~~~~~~~~~~

.....sorta. Miller did a later version in 1928 or was it 27, I;m pretty sure it ws that version that Williams knew about.

Haunting.

There is a whole galaxy of music out there most aren't aware of and it really is a shame. Jug bands, convicts in prison, so many that would record but one record then back into the shadows they came from. Some of these artists were killers, preachers, drug addicts, bootleggers, hobos, governors. Extremely interesting, but mostly ignored by Joe Public. Not Keith Richards, John Lennon, Eric Clapton, Jack White, Mick Jagger, Van Morrison, Elvis, Johnny Winter, Warren Haynes, Peter Green, Robert Plant, Bob Dylan, Janis Joplin, etc etc etc etc............

The amazing Little Willie John and his classic....

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y27vBA68Zyk

Willie John was known for his short temper and propensity to abuse alcohol, and was dropped by his record company in 1963.[5] (http://www.spurstalk.com/forums/#cite_note-arkansas-5) In 1966, he was convicted of manslaughter (http://www.spurstalk.com/wiki/Manslaughter) and sent to Washington State Penitentiary for a fatal knifing incident following a show in Seattle (http://www.spurstalk.com/wiki/Seattle). He appealed against his conviction and was released while the case was reconsidered, during which time he recorded what was intended to be his comeback album, but owing to contractual wrangling and the decline of his appeal, it was not released until 2008 (as Nineteen Sixty Six).[10] (http://www.spurstalk.com/forums/#cite_note-10) Little Willie John died in 1968 at Washington State Penitentiary (http://www.spurstalk.com/wiki/Washington_State_Penitentiary) in Walla Walla, Washington (http://www.spurstalk.com/wiki/Walla_Walla,_Washington). Despite counterclaims (Rolling Stone (http://www.spurstalk.com/wiki/Rolling_Stone) reported that the death occurred after John had checked into the prison hospital with pneumonia (http://www.spurstalk.com/wiki/Pneumonia)[11] (http://www.spurstalk.com/forums/#cite_note-11)), the official cause of death was listed in his death certificate as a heart attack (http://www.spurstalk.com/wiki/Myocardial_infarction).[4] (http://www.spurstalk.com/forums/#cite_note-Dead-4)

Dude, I made the mistake of ASSUMING everyone here gets my music knowledge. No way in hell a guy who can talk Bob Marley long before he became famous and Eric Clapton back in his John Mayall days doesn't know who wrote that tune. That's why I said....WHO WOULD HAVE THUNK IT? I was OBVIOUSLY (so I assumed) talking about a Brit guitar player covering a Marley tune. Only a fool wouldn't get that.

I could teach the history of recorded music at any school there is, and that should be real obvious.

It is funny however, it's SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO important that I make a mistake, hahahaha~~~ I don't make mistakes when it comes to music, trust me.

You do get....the dude who wrote it....makes no sense, right? TONS of covers far better than....the dude who wrote it.

I gave the Ramones, Iggy Pop a chance, they suck. LOUD head banger bullshit, no thanks.

I started to just post the video, but being we have some dummies here who must have the obvious explained......this is the original.

Them along with Gus Cannon's Jug Stompers and the Memphis Jug Band, the best of the prewar "groups" when it comes to country blues.

Imagine a trained choir singing them old blues. Yep, a cover.

I think there may be a thread for this. But here's another:
and here are some choice Avante lyrics:

love little girls they make me feel so good
I love little girls they make me feel so bad
When they're around they make me feel
Like I'm the only guy in town
I love little girls they make me feel so good

Uh oh take a second take
Uh oh it's a mistake
Uh oh I'm in trouble
Uh oh the little girl was just too little
Too little, too little, too little
Isn't this what life's all about
Isn't this a dream come true
Isn't this a nightmare too...

Mike Massé has the best covers. I've never heard a bad one and in many instances prefer his version to the original.

That said, ever since this scene from Sing Street I can't help but think it was written for Mike Massé specifically. Dude is phenomenally talented as an musician, but an unknown as an artist:

Scott Lucas is the lead singer of both bands, both somewhat successful. Great live performers.

Never even new the middle song was a cover since I don't listen to modern pop music. Had a different sound compared to most of their other stuff, so I asked Scott after a concert. Dude was pretty cool. Even autographed a record for my nephew who had just landed in detention for telling his teacher not to "play crap" ... Katy Perry.

If you get the chance to see Local H, you should do it.

If you saw Baby Driver, this here is Baby's mom from his flashback scenes. She's also a big David Lynch fan and was featured in The Return of Twin Peaks. The last song was from a David Lynch tribute concert and she absolutely killed the live performance of Blue Velvet with Lynch front row center 10 feet away.

Has a bunch of shitty pop music too, but I dig her covers. I'd like to see her do more of them.

Sky Ferriera is actually good; her music has moved on from trash electro pop phase. Night Time, My Time was pretty damn good tbh along with Everything is Embarrasing. She may be the worst actress that I've ever seen, however, she was god awful in the Green Inferno.

I'll look up the songs. I like Lynch a lot and know he likes her, though she wasn't featured in Twin Peaks. Still, I'll check it out.

Not much for pop, though. Outside of sappy 80s pop. Hahaha

She had a scene in Twin Peaks The Return. Very short, definitely over-acted.

So one of the best parts of music is how versatile an idea can be. One thing to somebody is something completely different to somebody else. Or one thing at one time is good, but it as something else at another time is greater.

Case and point: Heartbeats, By Knife

pPD8Ja64mRU

Same band a few years later

VrjwqXwyzNU

An artist later

ruQQ5UvICvA

Pretty radical change. Almost as if the soul of the song was found and redeemed, and I actually think all three versions are good, but the pop electronica version and acoustic version are a truer style of the art, both as covers.

This is one even Avante may like:

Eva Cassidy was a no-fame pub performer. Died from cancer within 10 months of this performance, and has since had multiple Gold albums of her covers thanks to a few news shows and word of mouth from stars like Fleetwood, McCartney, etc.

This cover is especially impressive, but her souls-blues ballad style lends itself well to a number of classics.

Frankly, most their fans haven't even embraced the idea that they were killed. How sh** do you have to be as a person to think that two persons such as they just happened to kill themselves within months of each other after talking about exposing a high profile pedo ring?
