View Full Version : Game Grades against the Pelicans brought to you by TGY

Lamarcus Aldridge - C-
14pts, 14rebs, 6/20 shooting
The only good thing he did tonight was crash the boards. Now to the ugliness.... everything else. Lamarcus, Kiwi, and Paddy built houses in NO 12 years too late.

David Lee - B+
13pts, 10reb, 5/7 shooting
Really the only starter who brought it tonight, tbh.. he'll be a great fit next to Nerlens Noel.

Kawhi Leonard - F
23pts, 6/16 shooting, 4TO
Got most of his points from pity fouls. Absolutely terrible game from Kiwi on both ends. Really selfish and sloppy play by him tonight.

Danny Green - D+
8pts, 3reb, 2ast, 2/5 shooting
Despite having 3 steals, he was the worst player defensively out of all starters. Solomon Hill, Tyreke Evans, and Buddy Hield tag teamed this dude back to the D-League. Kawhi's 30pt streak ended tonight, but Danny's airball streak still lives another day

Tony Parker - C-
7pts, 3ast, 1blk
The game got completely out of hand when he got benched UP 6, only to comeback in the game down double digits thanks to Microwave Fatty and crew

Fatty Mills - F
1/6 shooting, -14
Can we just ship this dude off to Philly for Nerlens already? I'll pay for 1-day delivery. The microwave is broken.

Manu Ginobili - C+
7pts, 4ast, -6
Was the only guy looking for Bertans. Would've gotten a higher grade if this was a win.

Fathead - F
4pts, 0/2 shooting, -18
Jesus Christ this guy blows when he plays with the second unit. He was a one man run for New Orleans tonight. Solid strip on brow, though, I guess..

Davis Bertans - A-
17pts in 19mins
Continues to take advantage of his small appearances. He needs more minutes, I don't care if it's at the 3, 4, or 5. Free B3rtans

Dewayne Deadmon - F
5 rebounds, 1 missed dunk
Benched for Joel Anthony. He's been extremely subpar since his first month here. He's an and-1 machine... for the other guy

Congrats to Chinook for resisting the urge to editorialize. You've played this whole game grade thing straight-up, from the beginning. Agree or disagree, you've rolled with what was presented - even times you could have edited, like tonight. Given the same opportunity, I'm not sure I could have resisted.

I only got to see the 4th quarter, so I can't comment much. Defense looked ugly in the 4th. Shots not falling. Lee looked like he did his usual thing, but I think some people have to start understanding why I didn't think he belongs at the C, even though he brings great effort.

Thanks for the praise, man. That's why I/we do these.

I really want these threads to represent all of Spurstalk, even parts of ST that I disagree with. As much as people want to criticize the quality of some threads or the grade choices the OPs give, it takes time and effort even to put out a half-assed assessment. I like to get mine out as soon as possible, and I'll think I've just written a bit only to see 70 minutes have passed since I started. Grades take time out of people's schedules, and that's shown in the number of drops we've had recently. Even if TGY was trolling or just didn't care to give grades that made sense to most of us, it still took time out of his day, and for that I appreciate his effort.

I missed the first quarter, so I can't comment too much, but I think the middle quarters were good enough to warrant some better grades. It was an ugly end, but there were stretches of nice ball thrown in. However, getting skunked late by NO always feels horrible even though they aren't an untalented team. The Spurs always find a way to lose on to the Pels, though.

What did you think of Pop's coaching?
I didn't miss the game but things were going on at home and my attention wasn't fixed enough to where I saw everything.

I hate to throw shade on anyone... but I thought defensively the effort wasn't there and it was uneven. It was a winnable game.

:pop:"We ran out of gas. New Orleans was aggressive. They played great for 48 minutes. They moved the ball, hit the boards hard and got loose balls," Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. "Kawhi did a good job. Tony, again, hasn't played in 10 days."

http://www.espn.com/nba/recap?gameId=400900122

The Spurs had been winning lately despite having starters Kawhi Leonard (http://www.espn.com/nba/player/_/id/6450/kawhi-leonard) and Tony Parker (http://www.espn.com/nba/player/_/id/1015/tony-parker) sidelined with nagging injuries. San Antonio fell with both back on the court. Leonard, returning from sore left hand that caused him to miss two games, scored 23, but showed some rustiness, missing 10 of 16 shots. Parker, who'd sat out four games with a sore left foot, hit only two of seven shots and one miss was a momentum-stalling air ball from the right corner in the final five minutes.

Tony:

"We had a great first half," Parker said. "In the second half, they were shooting the ball very well. They made a lot of 3s, so we have to give them credit."

I suppose it was a scheduled loss.. The Spurs were on a kind of historic road record and it was bound to end sometime. Still questionable coaching from Pop. I hope he's not just thinking "oh guys just got tired."

I am one of the biggest Bertans fans here, but I would have give him a slightly lower grade. He really struggled in the first half defensively when the Pelicans forced Davis to guard perimeter players. He also got blocked on a lazy dunk attempt.

That said, he can damn well shoot and delayed the Spurs collapse (for a few minutes at least.:lol)

Like I said... hate to throw shade on anyone but the rim protection was awful. Davis was terrible on defense if I am honest but at least he's an offensive player. I completely understand Dedmon in context getting the bench, he's there to board and defend and wasn't doing much on defense. I think Davis is just too light and gets pushed around on defense too much, a guy just puts a body on him and he's off his feet unfortunately, with said guy creating space. He tries hard though.

Patty was just awful both ends... just terrible. Murray should have played instead.:rolleyes

It does... frankly Davis too. As much as he can light things up ... he can't defend a flag pole.

Patty had a horrible game though.. but you have a point... when Davis and Lee are your best players it's a loss and it does remind me of Ferrari, a lot.

I have observed it when guards drive on him. You know they put the body on the shot blocker to defuse him and Davis just gets pushed off. Heck I saw Cojo do it to get a floater over him. But the help defense he was giving Mills who wasn't even looking to go over a screen is what did him in. I wish I could explain it better... but I wasn't referring to bigs posting him up but how a guard is able to push him out of the way with their body weight and momentum.
