View Full Version : This philosopher predicted Trump's rise in 1998 — and he has another warning ...

Click bait-y title, but interesting read nonetheless

Members of labor unions, and unorganized unskilled workers, will sooner or later realize that their government is not even trying to prevent wages from sinking or to prevent jobs from being exported. Around the same time, they will realize that suburban white-collar workers – themselves desperately afraid of being downsized – are not going to let themselves be taxed to provide social benefits for anyone else.

At that point, something will crack. The nonsuburban electorate will decide that the system has failed and start looking for a strongman to vote for – someone willing to assure them that, once he is elected, the smug bureaucrats, tricky lawyers, overpaid bond salesmen, and postmodernist professors will no longer be calling the shots.

Don the Con is a fraud, a bogus "strong man".

He's had nearly a month to at least announce help for his voters in financial distress, and he's done nothing but "reality TV" like the Carrier charade.

My dad predicted Trump in 1985 – it's not Orwell, he warned, it's Brave New World

The ascent of Donald Trump has proved Neil Postman’s argument in Amusing Ourselves to Death was right. Here’s what we can do about it

Amusing Ourselves to Death (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amusing_Ourselves_to_Death), a book written by my late father, Neil Postman, which anticipated back in 1985 so much about what has become of our current public discourse.

the dystopia my father believed we should have been watching out for. He wrote:

What Orwell (https://www.goodreads.com/author/show/3706.Orwell) feared were those who would ban books.

What Huxley (https://www.goodreads.com/author/show/3487.Huxley) feared was that there would be no reason to ban a book, for there would be no one who wanted to read one.

Orwell (https://www.goodreads.com/author/show/3706.Orwell) feared those who would deprive us of information.

Huxley (https://www.goodreads.com/author/show/3487.Huxley) feared those who would give us so much that we would be reduced to passivity and egoism.

Orwell (https://www.goodreads.com/author/show/3706.Orwell) feared that the truth would be concealed from us.

Huxley (https://www.goodreads.com/author/show/3487.Huxley) feared the truth would be drowned in a sea of irrelevance.

Orwell (https://www.goodreads.com/author/show/3706.Orwell) feared we would become a captive culture.

Huxley (https://www.goodreads.com/author/show/3487.Huxley) feared we would become a trivial culture."

My father’s book warned of what was coming, but others have seen and feared aspects of it, too (Norbert Wiener, Sinclair Lewis, Marshall McLuhan, Jacques Ellul, David Foster Wallace, Sherry Turkle, Douglas Rushkoff, Naomi Klein, Edward Snowden, to name a few).

Our public discourse has become so trivialized, it’s astounding that we still cling to the word “debates” for what our presidential candidates do onstage when facing each other. Really? Who can be shocked by the rise of a reality TV star, a man given to loud, inflammatory statements, many of which are spectacularly untrue but virtually all of which make for what used to be called “good television”?

Who can be appalled when the coin of the realm in public discourse is not experience, thoughtfulness or diplomacy but the ability to amuse – no matter how maddening or revolting the amusement?

Czesław Miłosz, winner of the Nobel prize for literature, is cited for remarking in his 1980 acceptance speech that that era was notable for “a refusal to remember”;

my father notes Miłosz referencing “the shattering fact that there are now more than one hundred books in print that deny that the Holocaust ever took place”.

“An Orwellian world is much easier to recognize, and to oppose, than a Huxleyan,” my father wrote.

“Everything in our background has prepared us to know and resist a prison when the gates begin to close around us … [but] who is prepared to take arms against a sea of amusements?”

Yeah, and I hate them with a passion. Wonder why my college experience was, in general, so miserable and lonely? I couldn't afford to go to a real school where the kids have the conservative values (such as those college students of the '80s) because all the public schools have gotten so damn liberal so the only thing that's left is the private schools like TCU that charge $50k a year just for tuition alone and don't give out grants like candy even to HS valedictorians like me. I don't like to ask, beg, or mooch except as a last resort. Oh, and I graduated debt free, no student loans, so I definitely don't want debt elimination or free tuition to happen. I worked hard and earned it. Bitch.

Fuck UT. I've disliked that school ever since my sophomore year in high school on a field trip up there. The layout of the campus is awful and their grading system is retarded. Their sports teams suck ass. Plus it's uber liberal and hipster, not just the college but all of Austin. Denton is far right by comparison. Couldn't get paid enough to live in that hellhole.

TAMUCS was an interesting case and I definitely regret not going there. Yeah, it might have cost me a little, but not too much and all my HS friends went there. Plus it's the most conservative university in Texas. I kind of regret not going there, I will always regret that, but it's water under the bridge now. Problem was my HS senior year, especially the last semester after being confirmed valedictorian, I wanted two things: 1) FREE college, and that meant free, and 2) a fresh start, away from everyone I knew in HS... but I'll regret that one forever.

No, my mom didn't pay my bills (she was a substitute teacher the past year and had a sub-$25k total income for 2012) so I paid my own bills w/grants and scholarships in college. Valedictorian exemption waiver automatically scored me free tuition my first year. I also worked for $11.50 an hour as a T.A./tutor my last 2 years as an undergrad though all my fellow student faculty were grad and PHD students. Graduated in 3 years total, from fall 2013 - spring 2016.

Is your definition of "cute" purple and neon orange haired, covered in tats, and with a bull ring or two in the nasal septum? :lol

That's your "college of arts and sciences" population -- and don't even get me started on the music college. But I spent my last 2 out of 3 years in the business college meaning the business building. Unfortunately, UNT college of business has a huge reputation for commuter, "non traditional" students... meaning old fogies over 30 and with kids/wives/husbands etc. That's about half the business college. The other half is millennials my age and such, but there were seemingly more blacks than whites and you couldn't find an attractive, "normal" white girl to save your life in there.

Let's throw out the "going back to school" old ladies for a minute. The rest are --

hipsters & dykes - 30%
plain janes/uggos (usually nerds, a few heroin/meth addicts) - 30%
blacks - 25%
mexicans that don't fall into category #2 - 5%
normal, pretty non-sorority girls - 5% (but most of them are education majors)
sorority girls - 5% (many are attractive at first glance, but for some reason, at UNT most of them smoke)

The other thing that sucks ass in Denton is the entire nightlife is just bars. That's. fucking. it. No clubs, no raves (for those of us millennials who like to dance and jump in a frenzied crowd to loud upbeat music but NOT necessarily shell out to get drunk), no singles clubs, no karaokes and dance type places where guys and girls can naturally meet each other for the first time and exchange numbers, hook up or even start a relationship. Some college towns and other places have those, but not Denton.

In Denton, if you don't have a pre-established group to go out with at night, you're pretty much fucked and you're 99.999999% likely to go home alone and bored wishing you'd spent your time playing games in your apartment (or dorm if you're a fishy) instead. Because all it is there in the Denton bars is pre established groups. They look at a male newbie loner as if he has leprosy, a weirdo, or simply isn't there. Going to Fry Street or the Square alone at night is so boring. On the plus side, it's pretty safe because it's a low crime town and there's tons of police. But that doesn't help you get laid or a girlfriend.

The only non-"mundane bar" I can think of in Denton is the Rockin Rodeo that's in an awkward location south of campus in an old dying strip mall near the I-35 construction zone. It's country, it's conservative, but it's well over 80% old fucks. The remaining millennials that do go there are all coupled and practically everyone smokes. It's lame-o.

The thing I do like about the Denton bars is they're very Cowboy-centric, full of Cowboy fans, mainly older non college students that smoke, but that isn't a big deal as long as I stand back when they've got their annoying cancer stick lit. The screens at the Denton bars provide a better showing of the Cowboy games a lot better than they do in my current area of north Dallas. And they generally don't make me leave if I'm not ordering food or drink, either, like the snobby bars here in Plano/Frisco.

I'm not gonna lie... the first time I ever got laid in Denton was at a backyard bonfire party the Friday night before homecoming Saturday... well actually I didn't get laid that night, but I did meet the girl, Danielle, I ended up getting laid with that night. (We exchanged numbers that night and the ensuing Monday we dated at Movie Tavern and went back and had sex in my apartment.)

I got there because I was invited to the address via UNT on Facebook. It was the perfect party I'd been waiting for since starting the university, because it was actually a normal party with open-minded, normal young people who weren't necessarily political or uber left or right or weird or fratty or cliquey or activists or anything. They were just "normal" people in their early to mid 20s of different majors and races, probably majority white but all-inclusive, just wanting to party and have some fun and meet people, and it was a good night. I wanted more of that BADLY!! Where were those sort of parties all along?

The sad part about that was, it wasn't my first nor my second Homecoming weekend at UNT. It took me until the 3rd fucking October to get me any UNT pussy. Jeez.

UNT parties in a nutshell --

Type 1) Twerkfest apartment party, ghetto, ratchet, usually 99% black, I look awkward as fuck as a whitey in there even though I went to a couple of those because of lack of anything better to do... mostly in spring and fall 2014.

Type 2) Frat house/frat hosted apartment party... exclusive, invite only, usually like $40-60 for an invite as an outsider if they'll even let you at all.

Type 3) University hosted union "party"... can you even call these parties? I don't. The only university hosted party that was ever fun was the one my freshman orientation where we actually had a real rave party, yes there was no alcohol but it was still fun because there was jumping, dancing, grinding, heat and sweatiness, loud music... but they don't offer those for actual present students. As for the union parties, they're REAL boring. Go if they offer free food, that's about it. No alcohol, nothing personal, sexual or risqué about it, no foul language in music, no jumping, dancing or commotion, basically no fun, attracts a lot of dorks and very little else, usually pretty dead in there... waste of time.

I found a special type 4 that ONE time... and it got me laid. Now where were those "normal" melting-pot parties all along?

It was more like 6: Clinton missed her free throws and shithead just squeaked out a W as a result.

The goal was to win the Electoral College and Trump cleaned her clock pretty good.

Meh he won Florida by 1 + 2/10 points, Michigan by 3/10 of a point, Pennsylvania by 7/10 of a point, and Wisconsin by 7/10 of a point. If the election skewed 8/10 of a point more in Clinton's way she would have won 278-260. Give her 1 + 3/10 of a point and she wins 307-231 instead of losing 232-306. I don't see how this can be spun as anything but a really narrow win for Trump.

Democrats ran their bestest most experienced most qualified candidate ever against a novice who has been a punchline for 30 years. It was a crushing defeat no matter how you spin it.

I'm not saying it's not a crushing defeat, it is. Did you not find 6 a crushing defeat as a Spurs fan even though it was an extremely tight game where the title came down to one missed Kawhi Leonard free throw?

I still cannot believe that Trump won, bum. I wish the time twixt the victory and the 21st of January would have lasted longer. You know, freeze time in that time frame. We weren''t on the clock, the scoreboard hadn't been plugged in. The victory tour: every appearance the exact same itinerary. It fit Dale's bill to a T. Repeating the same malarkey over & over & over again. I love that shit. Every time he'd say:::"The men and women who have been forgotten, will be forgotten no more." I'd fucking tear up every single time. I'd call Girl in and make her stand there as I replayed it. "You're obsessed with it, Dale."

It's like "28 Days Later" now. They're coming at Trump like a horde of zombies, the fast ones.

But, for 60+ days I was in sheer heaven.

They lost 6 to the reigning champions not the Knicks. I voted for the guy but let's face it he's a baffoon and the Dems lost to him.

So I still can't tell if you're trying to defend the landslide win talk from Trump and his fans like cubby.

Meh the media was stupid saying it was some completely unforseen upset no one could have called. I was surprised at the Trump win but Nate Silver kept explaining why the Clinton firewall was so fragile so I wasn't shocked to see the result we did. He gave Trump a 1 in 3 chance of winning and had a 10% chance of the electoral vote going to Trump while the popular vote went to Clinton. He even had an article saying a 1.5 point skew in the polls in Trump's favor would win him the election, which is pretty close to what happened. All these pundits in the media don't understand probability and were acting like Trump had to win a bunch of coin flips while Silver kept arguing those states he had to win had very correlated votes and thus the media was really overstating the improbability of him winning all the states he did in the Clinton firewall.

Scoreboard, hole. If you had it you'd be high on the hog.We have elections every few years. The scoreboard isn't static, unless future elections are precluded.

Do you think elections are over, Thread?
