This would be an "okay move" if Rob was just the pretty face of the FO working in front a bunch of analytics nerds. Pelinka is a great schmoozer, no doubt. But I know he's getting the keys to the city :lol

Seriously, though. Is this an unprecedented move in NBA history? I can't think of ANY GM that was hired who at least didn't have at least one of these qualities:

- Some NBA experience
- Some NBA Front office experience
- College coaching experience, head coach or assistant
- Job as a statistician (Hollinger, Morey, the latter of whom did have prior NBA front office experience)

This is pretty unreal and a terrible move on the surface. Unless, like I said, Jeannie and Magic fill out the FO with qualified people while Rob wines and dines, but I don't think that's going to happen.

So he was responsible for signing the deal that sunk the lakers franchise and the lakers are now rewarding him with a front office job?

What I got from this hiring is, Rob was brought in due to his vast knowledge of the CBA, y'know the loopholes, procedures and rules of the game. I think Magic will have final say on all transactions. Rob's job is to make sure the numbers work since Aids have zero understanding on how the new landscape of the CBA works etc.

Could be, but why not just give him an assistant job for that? Pelinka isn't a statistician nor does he have tje NBA playing, scouting or coaching experience to judge talent and how said talent will fit. Magic certainly has the experience, but we all know Magic has proven himself to be a terrible talent evaluator.

They should've hijacked a guy from the Spurs, Warriors, or Rockets FO.

Obviously this is all conjecture on my part but I think Pelinka is practically acting as an overpaid accountant behind closed doors. Ryan West, the logo's son, is basically replacing Kupchak's role, scouting and evaluating talents. Magic is filling the late Dr. Buss' shoes by having the final say on all personnel moves.

Myers was an assistant for 12 months.

I think the Suns might've done it. Lon Babby.

Yup the Suns did it with Babby and that fat piece of shit probably did more the cripple the Suns franchise than anyone else not named Robert Sarver. Hiring other shitty coaches/GMs, getting in bidding wars with himself for his former clients (Josh Childress) or just using the Suns to do favors for his former clients (trading for Hedo a year into his Toronto contract that no one else wanted to touch).

Yeah. Should be a cautionary tale on hiring agents as GMs. Too much conflict-of-interest can emerge, like Pelinka already trying to get Kobe an FO job :lol

Literally the first thing Babby did within a week of being hired was trade for the Turkoglu contract every had been saying was virtually untradable and offer Childress twice as much money as any other team :lol, I still can't believe there wasn't any real outrage over it.

Looks like the new Lakers GM is doing similar things :lol

An interesting move for sure, to say the least. Difficult to call it terrible or genius either way. It's the type of move that simply will have to be evaluated later after seeing what kinds of moves he makes.

I would say I think American pro sports teams may start looking outside the fraternity of former players and coaches more and more to run their teams more like a business and less like an exclusive country club. The success of Theo Epstein and the already mentioned Bob Myers does give "some" precedent. Obviously both had some front office experience, Myers with very little but at least some. I think it would have been wiser to get someone older with a lot of experience to at least mentor Pelinka in an assistant general manager position for at least a year or two. And maybe they do get him a special consultant and/or mentor. But flipside is that while the Lakers are so bad and organizational mistakes don't necessarily mean you're costing the team championships, perhaps it's the type of situation where it's fine to just throw him to the sharks and see if he can survive.

No guarantee getting a guy with experience would end up being better. Could also end up being like a Billy King or Kevin McHale caliber GM. If the choice is between a former coach/general manager with experience and limited or very little success and a guy with zero experience but is extremely intelligent, you may be just rolling the dice either way anyway.

Only time will tell.
