I forget where I read it, but I saw an article once that went into how the "jobs Americans won't do" talking point wasn't even a thing until the 1950s, when farmers were grasping for any excuse to keep the Bracero program in place. It was always bullshit, because there were plenty of native-born farm workers who suddenly had to compete with Bracero workers and illegals and soon got pushed out into other lines of work.
