Wow...for someone with the basketball brain that Coach Nick has, that is an incredibly asinine take.

How much you get for your latest sneaker deal or how much of your soul you sell to State Farm should have absolutely NOTHING to do with your ability to produce on the court and carry your team.

Coach Nick has sold his soul?!?! The Westbrook or Harden campaign teams must have bought him out. I guess by that definition, Tim was never a superstar and never should've won an MVP.

He has his own clothing apparel line with Jordan. And does some bad commercials. Kawhi isn't a mountain dew kinda guy.

Meh, it's dumb...but it's just semantics. To some people, "superstar" inherently means being insanely popular and marketable. If you aren't recognized in pretty much every household, you aren't a superstar. By this definition, Melo is more of a superstar than Kawhi.

I don't agree with it, but that's how some people define it. Not sure there's a 100% correct way of defining a sports superstar.

Kawhi is incredibly marketable because he is "quiet" and "humble," meaning white people love him because he's not a demonstrative black guy, imo

Coach Nick may be sarcastic but he really is stating a narrative that most sports journalists believe."Superstar" is an undefined term. With no real meaning anyone can give definition to it. In this case in order to be the best you must be a "superstar", which means you must market yourself out to the public. Glad Kawhi is concentrating on becoming the best player in basketball and only that will matter and last. All that other bullshit, is here today and gone tomorrow...

This

Anytime Nick tries any subject not strictly on the court he usually embarrasses himself. His attempts at humor on his casts are cringe worthy

james evans
03-17-2017, 11:28 AM
technically, that's what a superstar is today. It's not about playing level, it's about marketability. Some guys no matter how great they are, you just can't market them to the masses. Duncan, Olajuwon, Leonard, Kareem(for obvious reasons), .. Some dudes just don't have the charisma that the white media feels they can exploit. Now, jumping around after every point like you're having a seizure, that's marketable. Scoring and then getting to the other end of the court to play defense, nah, can't market that.

03-17-2017, 11:40 AM
Is Lollard a superstar? Other NBA players would laugh at that shit. Ask LeBron if kawhi is a superstar. :lol

Agreed.

That sounds like the Kobe argument for when he was collecting tons of money after getting old and injured :lol

We understand there's a business, but it's a sport first and if someone will be called the best, it's the best at the sport.
That's just common sense.

elbamba
03-17-2017, 01:35 PM
I would make the argument that neither Paul nor Blake are superstars, yet one has State Farm and the other has Kia commercials. As support for my take, name a team with two superstars that have never made it to the finals.

Agree. But Coach Nick says Kawhi isn't markteable at all when Kawhi's 7 in top jersey selling, he his has his own Jordan line, his own sweatsuits line too...

Saying Kawhi's less marketable than LeBron or Kobe is one thing, saying he's not marketable is another...The first is true, the latter not.

There is a difference between a marketing superstar and a basketball superstar. Basketball superstar is a phenomenal basketball talent. A marketing superstar is one that plays basketball to sell shit.

DMC
03-17-2017, 04:10 PM
The problem is fans have conflated the terms "superstar" with "all star" as if "super star" is the next level from "all star" but it's not even related (see Carmelo Anthony), and if you misuse something long enough eventually it becomes the norm (See even people like Trey Gowdy saying "this begs the question"). Super-star" is a celebrity term, and to be a celebrity you have to be recognizable by face and name to a lot of people. Kawhi isn't recognizable to most people.

I think coach Nick is being pedantic. Kawhi is for sure a star in the NBA. He's just not a star outside of it. He doesn't have a high profile, intentionally too I might add.

I loved his tweet from earlier that went something like "if you told someone in the 90's NBA that the MVP's team won only 48 games, they'd laugh you off the line..."

I bet the horsemeat connoisseurs around here love him, seems he hates Russ and OKC more than STers love coming here to cry a about slights, or eating horse meat.
