Ronaldo "saved" all his energy to sprint on that silly documentary they did about him, and only set a 3.61 second mark over 82 feet. Doing the math, Buxton covered 82 feet in about 3.31 seconds, and that was WITH the pause of having to drop the bat.

I never understood the baseball hate on here tbh. I'm too lazy to look back and get the backstory. Some of the players (designated hitters) are out of shape, for sure, but pretty much any position outside of first base and pitcher requires athleticism.

I don't really care about baseball that much since it is boring to watch, but I'm not going to sit here, diarrhea all over myself, and pretend that it doesn't take athleticism or a special type of skill.

I've argued before that outfielders are the most well rounded athletes in American sports.

Most would clock in 4.3ish-4.6 40 times. Sportscience did a comparison and found that your average Joe outfielder (Springer is above average, but he's your typical mold of today's outfielder) has similar explosiveness as an NFL running back.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=31VIvj7R12I

In addition, you need to have at least a >30" vert, arm strength to throw over 90mph, be able to catch balls sailing over 100 feet in the air, and oh yeah, hit a baseball. Arguably the hardest routine action in sports.

Baseball is hated among some here because it's not a "stamina" sport. Who gives a shit? 102 year olds are running marathons.

All that athleticism and they use it a handful of times per game, at most. It's a shame. It's the game itself that is fucking fat and lacks action. It's slow paced and there's barely any movement by it's "athletes".

The fat players that your lot keeps referencing make up less than 10% of the MLB. And none of the top MLB players look anything like Bartolo Colon. I know you guys keep going to that well because trolling, but it's a pretty unimaginative troll job now. Pick a new lane.

"Handful of times per game."

Yet you love soccer. :lol

I've watched A LOT of soccer. Soccer players get even less opportunities to showcase their athleticism than baseball players. During the World Cup Final, Messi was totally shutdown and maybe had one decent touch all game. The rest of the time he was simply jogging around trying to find a seam. Same shit with Portugal in the Euro. The "greatest athlete" in the world did pretty much fuck all and pretty much all of Portugal's games were grindy snoozefests. I mean, are you all really that entertained by jogging around that you confuse it with athletic display? If you tell me you enjoy the skill display of poorball, fair enough. But let's not pretend it's a high octane athletic game.

Also, why do you need "action?" Basketball does that better than just about every other sport in existence. I ain't going to tell you how to watch baseball, but the primary point of the sport is to hit a very fast and moving ball past 9 players. It's not about constant running around and jumping, although there are plenty of those moments.

You're confusing scoring goals with showcasing athleticism. Messi can have multiple impressive, otherwordly runs and none end up in a goal. Single passes can be fun to watch because of the vision required. A team stringing multiple passes together to set up a shot at goal is fun to watch. Strong defensive play, goal keeper saves, etc. There's plenty of action in soccer. Easily more than fatball.

Nope.

There's about 300 total pitches in baseball. I get you don't appreciate pitching because you really don't understand the difficulty of it, but watching a pitcher work a batter is fun to watch. I get it. You need "running around" to be entertained. I don't. I'm not preaching. Just calling out your arbitrary definition of "action."

Center fielders especially are about as athletic as receivers in the NFL.

tbh, like I said before, I'm not even a baseballuva since I don't really watch that much. I'm just curious as to where the hate comes from and why baseball's the one sport on here that has to deal with the 'cherry picked fat guy' shit as proof that it's not a sport.

Couldn't I also play devil's advocate and post all those shirtless quarterbacks, with the dad-bods, and go "hurrrr durrr not a sport!!!!" as well? I'm not going to do that though because I don't make a habit of vomiting and crapping all over myself simultaneously all the time when it comes to these arguments (I'm not gay either).

Yep. I do it all the time with NFL lineman and I get crickets from football fans like FKLA and DAF.

And I realize some of those NFL lineman can run 5ish 40s and are superhumanly strong, but they act like Prince Fielder doesn't have a similar size/speed/strength ratio. Pitchers can come in all shapes in sizes, though, but generally speaking, a Bartolo or CC bod won't cut it. Bartolo is just otherworldly skilled. Pitchers look more like this in general.

https://pbs.twimg.com/media/CLz2y_KWsAA4zBS.jpg

The hate primarily comes from there not being enough "running around." That's their preference, but it does not invalidate baseball as an athletic game. Inches kill you in the sport, and if you lack the necessarily athleticism to rob hits, throw out runners, beat out throws, hit the ball hard, you won't be a very good baseball player.

And then you have the entire SouthPark episode about the kids wanting to lose on porpuse to not having to play baseball. I know the Simpsons made some jokes about soccer too, but that's to be expected. You will never see British or Germans TV shows making fun of soccer for being boring, tbh.

:lmao Prince Fielder runs a projected 4.7 :lmao Faster than soccer's top athlete.

Yep.

Then prove otherwise, Philo.

Try and logically argue that Fagnaldo would have a faster 40 time than that?

Here's how split times in the 40 yard typically go for sprinters in the NFL:

Athlete 1

10 yd - 1.59
10-20 - 1.06
20-40 -- 1.94
40 yd - 4.59

Athlete 2

10 yd - 1.70
10-20 - 1.05
20-40 -- 1.95
40 yd - 4.70

http://www.strengthcoach.com/public/1744.cfm

Let's give Fagnaldo the 20 yard split time in the first example of 1.94 (.97 seconds per ten yard split). Adding that ten yard split to his 25m (27 yard) time of 3.61 seconds, we get 4.58 seconds. And there's still 3 yards to go. 3 yards is 30% of 10 yards, .97 x .30 = .291 seconds. 4.58 + .291 = 4.871 seconds.

LOOKS FUCKING GOOD. If anything, the blog I initially listed was probably being kind.

I await some Philo'ing. Be better if you just dealt with the fact that your soccer hero isn't really all that fast.

They also tested Ronaldo's (running) vertical leap and it came in at about 30". :lmao

Even soccer fans admit that soccer is boring:

Soccer is boring. One of the misconceptions non-soccer fans have about soccer fans is that we don’t know this. The classic Simpsons parody of a soccer match — "Fast kickin'! Low scorin'! And ties? You bet!" — hangs on the joke that the game puts Americans to sleep while somehow, bafflingly, driving foreigners wild with excitement. Calling the game for Springfield TV, Kent Brockman practically grinds his teeth with frustration: "Halfback passes to the center … back to the wing … back to the center. Center holds it. Holds it. [Huge sigh.] Holds it." One booth over, the Spanish commentator is going nuts: "Halfback passes to the center! Back to the wing! Back to the center! Center holds it! Holds it!! HOLDS IT!!!"

It's a great comedy bit, but it's not really accurate as a depiction of soccer culture. Soccer fans know soccer is boring. Soccer fans have seen more soccer than anyone. We're aware that it can be a chore. Fire up Twitter during the average Stoke City-Wigan match and you'll find us making jokes about gouging out our own eyes with wire hangers, about the players forgetting where the goals are, about what would happen if we released a pride of lions onto the pitch. (Answer: The game would still finish 0-0.)

:wow How will povertyball fags ever recover?

:lol Yeah, I've read that article before.

That said, I also think the "it's boring!" argument against any sport is rather shallow. As a lover of sports, I'm sure you will agree. I can find something to appreciate in all sports. My main issues with soccer are: how disproportional a penalty awarded in the box is. Here's a game that ends in 0-0 like 10% of the time, and you're essentially giving free goals away for a situation that probably wouldn't have resulted in a goal (i.e. Mexico vs. Holland, 2014 World Cup. One of the worst sporting events I've ever seen). Then there's the Mario Party minigame used to decide major matches. Then there's the diving that still hasn't been effectively policed.

In addition to that, I also think its scoring structure is less compelling than other sports, as I've went into detail about before.

Take the 4th quarter of most NBA games in the RS (and all quarters of the last 4 years of the Lakers) and you'll get the mid season baseball feeling. All sports have that. Soccer has it from start to finish.

Funny. Ayoade's commentary is basically how Americans view soccer. Pass, pass, pass some more, all culminating in what will probably be a tie :lol

That's different, those characters are nerdy outcasts. The idea is to show they dislike something everybody else enjoys. The show isn't making fun of soccer, it's making fun of their nerdism, tbh. It would be like the "Big Bang theory" guys getting bored at a football game. Way different than the examples I gave.

:lol I should've white texted your probable response. I knew you were going to go "Um, it's different!" route.

No. The final layer of the joke is that since these "outcasts" aren't indoctrinated by mainstream society, they can more clearly see the flaws/silliness in something everyone else blindly enjoys. That's why Ayoade's commentary is similar to the Simpson's joke. Americans didn't grow up on soccer culture, weren't indoctrinated into it, so they found the back and forth midfield play boring compared to the Mexican commentator who found each pass the most exciting thing since sliced bread.

And as I told CN, I think the boring description of any sport is shallow. Ice Hockey, Basketball, Aussie Rules, Rugby makes soccer look static as shit by comparison. So if action and athleticism are the only things you care about, why are you still watching soccer when those other more "dynamic" sports exist?

Rhetorical question, obviously.

Don't get too excited over it though. It's really not that hard to do. To shit on Povertyball fans all you really have to do is show up.

I've never been a beisbol fan though, but beisbol is 10000x more exciting than kicking a ball around for 90 minutes only for the game to end in a 0-0 tie.

What draws me into these threads isn't necessarily to defend baseball, but to expose their silly arguments. They can find baseball boring to the heart's content, but I think propping up soccer in comparison as a "dynamic" game is nonsensical. Like I said, compare soccer to hockey, rugby, basketball, Aussie rules, Lacrosse, and even American Football (yes, static during playcalling, but every play is a 100% sprint), and it looks "slow."

Fat can be good, bro. Too much muscle mass, too much oxygen demand and less flexibility. Like those fat rugby props:

You wouldn't want this dude having 275lb of muscle. He probably wouldn't even be able to run.

Yes in rugby in the ol times in particular you had the three "fat" centers playing to protect advantage line pretty much like in NFL who protects the QB, in rugby they "protect" the number 9 who ensure the transition between the front and back lines.

nowadays those dudes are pretty athletic and look more like that:

https://img.vavel.com/article_domingo_351091494.jpg

but yes you still have some dudes like that:

http://i.rugbyrama.fr/2016/06/27/1884787-39691618-2560-1440.jpg?w=1050

Tbh I was quite suprised that nobody would refer to those centers playing rugby, they play a very tough game 2 times 40 mn with a lot of tough contacts... I played rugby and soccer and I can tell you that rugby is much much more demanding.

Regarding fatball and soccer feud I just don't give a fuck to be franck just following the international krew... I don't judge anybody for liking a sport
