They had RJ miked in that last Spurs/Cavs game. It was hard not to cringe. There was some play where one of the Cavs got knocked down under the basket and RJ was running in, yelling at his teammates, "Hep him up, hep him up". In that voice of his. It sounded like the voice you would associate with Magic's son.

To this day, I still cannot tell if this was serious or in jest. Tim's shove looked like he was joking, but his deadpan face and RJ's reaction make it seem more spirited than I think it was really meant to be.

Damn good stuff and clear he and TD are good pals. Lots of hate here over the years for RJ that I never understood (other than his big contract).

There's nothing more egregious to Spurstalk than someone under-performing on a big contract.

RJ just wasn't a fit....

He wasn't a shooter but the Spurs actually turned him into a fair decent one tbh..he was more suited for a passing PG like Kidd and not a scoring PG like Tony..

Great Podcast though..

it's funny that we all assume Pop doesn't know shit about Matty's or RJ's shortcomings, and he gets into all of them. Wouldn't be surprised if he dropped a Turnobili here or there

RJ put that sticky tape that the players use to get the dirt off of their shoes on Manu. That is why Tim did that. LOL!!! Pretty positive it was all just messing around.

Most definitely. They just played it off well keeping straight faces. I think that's why TD does that little "sniffle" to keep from even showing the slightest grin

That sniff was perfect. My wife does that when she gets sarcastic with me. As in, "I get to choose the movie this time because we saw your Academy Award winning movie "John Wick" last time (insert sniffle with extra emphasis here).

Just had a chance to give a listen. Probably a top 3 interview ever with Tim. So much insight into his personality and some of the inner workings of the Spurs. Interesting to listen to him just shoot the shit without having to put on his media face.

Also, this does make it harder to hate Richard Jefferson. He under-performed in his time as a Spur (and sounds pretty candidly aware about it, actually) but he seems like a good dude. Glad he got his ring last year.

Let's see...he replaced Bruce Bowen, a fan favorite, and was an immediate downgrade simply by not being a perfect system guy like Bruce. He would go on to be replaced by Kawhi, one of the greatest players of all time, further highlighting the "RJ years" as subpar. He happened to begin declining as a player when he joined the Spurs, so he was a disappointment for fans who were expecting New Jersey All-star RJ. And the Spurs had some of their worst playoff exits of the Duncan era with him on the team. 2008-11 was basically the Dark Age of the Duncan era.

...Is that enough reasons?

That pretty much sums it up. Anyone watching the Spurs in those playoff runs know exactly why he wasn't like wearing the silver n black. Off the court in real life he seems great but on the basketball court in the Spurs lineup....

IMO they still were legit contenders in 2008 (Manu was SuperManu that year posting a 24+ PER)... but the Pau Gasol collusionesque transfer to the Lakers... coupled with the tarmac incident prior to Game 1 of the WC Finals vs. those Lakers, and the highly suspect substitutionary crew assignment of then-recently reinstated Joey Crawford to the most critical of swing games in that series (Game 5) leading to the infamous Barry non-call. Yeah all of that simply to get the storied Lakers vs. Celtics finals... THAT is how I remember that season...
