Cheney: Russian meddling possibly 'an act of war'

Former Vice President Dick Cheney said Monday that Russia’s meddling in the U.S. presidential election could be "considered an act of war.”

Cheney, who served as President George W. Bush’s No. 2, spoke about Russia at The Economic Times’ Global Business Summit on Monday.

“There’s not any argument at this stage that somehow the election of President Trump was not legitimate, but there’s no question that there was a very serious effort made by Mr. Putin and his government, his organization, to interfere in major ways with our basic, fundamental democratic processes,” he said. “In some quarters, that would be considered an act of war.”

The Russians have bigger problems than Cheney's mumbling meandering.
Putin is gonna have to axe some of his corrupt friends. They killed a guy who was a bit too popular.
Putin will learn he needs to protect certain corruption fighters so he appears above it all.

I don't know.

I have a hard time believing Cheney would say that in the way the snippets implies.

Is there a problem with wanting to see the 100% transcript? I searched, but couldn't find it.

You can't ask for much more than complete sentences, which were quoted in the article. I have no idea what else he could have said in context that would alter the meaning of those quotes.

But here's the 20 minute speech so you can satisfy your selective skepticism.

So the context is correct. I am surprised. However, before the 3 minute mark, he says what he says is his opinion. He makes clear he is not part of the government any more. To me, this means he has no inside knowledge.

Opinion is not fact.

What the hell does this even mean? It's pretty clear that he's giving an opinion about it being an "act of war" even without the context, so I'm not sure what part of his quote you're taking issue with.

Actually, I don't see that.

I see people mocking Cheney as a deranged war hawk, I see them laughing about his propensity to shoot friends in the face, I see people noting the hypocrisy of any US official calling this kind of meddling an act of war, I see a poem of some kind, I see someone suggesting Cheney didn't mean what was quoted in the article, and I see someone responding that he did.

I'm not sure I see anyone making any comment in this thread that exclusively relies on the exact phrasing of the headline, and I certainly don't see anyone in this thread who thinks what Dick Cheney says, and whether he personally believes Russia committed an act of war, actually matters.

The man with a man-sized safe in his office, the grey eminence formerly referred to as the fourth branch of government.

4.5 million people died in the wars we started in west Asia and south Asia after 9/11, millions more were displaced. We're still kinda there in Iraq, Syria and the Horn of Africa --

Pioneered the pattern of post-911 extralegal, super-secret official actions against terrorism including extraordinary rendition, indefinite detention and torture; plus defense sector contracting shenanigans. Obama normalized assassination of US citizens and all the foregoing for Trump, as it turns out. Biden too.

(Obama was a Tory, a caretaker of American power, including the amplitude of the powers of his own office, which he passed on to Trump fully intact, which Biden did too.)

The chilling of speech and the compelling of loyalty stood out in the early oughts too.

Then they got fucked up in the wars, like everybody else.
