Starting to legitimately believe in the possibility of the Cavs not making it out of the East.. This team has looked medicore for good part of three months now..

Spurs continue to look awful against good defenses. I just don't have confidence in this team going anywhere come playoff time until the PG situation is improved.

Spurs are too predictable. Reminisce of the 90s Spurs. You just have to shut one guy down.

Nah. The 90s Spurs didn't have a #2 guy nearly as good as Aldridge. Nor did they have a Pau Gasol or Manu Ginobili coming off the bench. Nor were they coached by a Gregg Popovich (pre-Bob Hill firing).

Most shots on team by far.

Pop is nowhere as good as he used to be. Agree on the rest though.

I wish we had signed Lance. He cracks me up. He baited and trolled Toronto in epic Trump style. Even simple George saw it coming:

“I’ll take fault in passing it to him because I knew he was going to lay it up,” George said of Stephenson.

One big orange thumbs up for Lance.

I disagree with the first part. They had some decent talent come through that should have been better than what they turned out to be. Elliott was better than LMA imo. Strickland should have been so much better.
But like you said, they didn't have anything close to a great coach.

Not exactly the same of course but the main elements are there.

The main guy is a defensive monster who doesn't have a killer go to move that can't be stopped.
Second banana a borderline all star (Elliott at his prime was better or at least on par with Spurs Aldridge)
Hope at PG, forcing the main guy to carry an offence.
Nobody can create on a semi consistent basis outside of the main guy, allowing the opposition to relatively easily shut the main guy down.

This Spurs team is shaping up to be the worst 60-win Spurs team along with the 11 Spurs. The only reason they can even be considered a contender is because the rest of the league is just as weak, or even weaker.

Not sure if you guys are overrating Elliott or underrating Aldridge. The latter is a 5-time All-star. He's not that much worse than his Portland days, he just plays a smaller role in the Spurs system. If anything, he's a better defensive player now than ever before. And he's still a natural scorer when he finds his rhythm. He might have a weak go-to move (fadeaway jumper), but at least he has a go-to move that can be deadly when it's on.

To be fair, I'm probably underrating Elliott because I don't remember the early 90s very well. But I feel very confident in saying Aldridge > Elliott.

Too soon to say that. Let's see what happens. This team has some serious depth. We bring three former All-stars off the bench (Pau, Manu, Lee) + an international star (Mills). It's actually a well-constructed team aside from the PG position. I think they're built for a deep playoff run.

It's a decent debate. But we don't have prime Aldridge here. Prime Elliott was better than the current LMA. IMO.

Elliott was actually quite a competent defensive player, which is funny in a way. Robinson was one of the best defenders of all time, Elliott was at least competent, and arugably second best defensive SF during his prime (behind Pippen obviously), while Rodman, when honed in, is the best of the best amongst defenders (but that guy died in Detroit). While the Spurs were decent defensively back in the day, they were never the best of the league, or even top 3.

On offense, Elliott had a great first step and was decent from 3. He wasn't much of a creator other than for himself, but he was quite devastating on the fast break.

At his prime, he was very comparable to Aldridge.

As for the chances this year, like I said, the only reason the Spurs are in contention is because :lol today's NBA suck. There is really one real contender, a bunch of pretenders that people think are contenders (Spurs, Rockets, Cavs maybe), then everybody else. The league is really at its weakest since around the 2008 to 2011 era, and prior to that the late 70s cocaine-ball era.

Don't get me wrong, the 90s was pretty much all Bulls, but it's because the Bulls were that great. The Knicks, Rockets, Spurs, or Sonics would contend against :today's NBA, GSW included.

That's all hypothetical. Nobody knows how a 2017 team would fare against a 90s team. All you can do is imagine.

The present time is all that really matters anyway. I don't care if this is a weak era; if my team succeeds, I'm happy.
