After 2000 Shaq was in pacing himself in regular season mode even taking surgeries to start a season/training camp.
2000 was the last year he was the best player AND PLAYED HARD FOR 82 games and he won it almost unanimously...since its a regular season award and doesnt go to the best player...or Jordan would have more ...Shaq has about what he should get.

It didn't take long for things to turn in his favor again (Phil Jackson's return, 81 points, Gasol & Bynum frontcourt, back to back titles) and he played it perfectly. Creating the "Black Mamba", "playing chess while everyone else plays checkers", etc. Everyone just ate it all up.

I do agree that his final years and the analytics movement have hurt his legacy though.
