Report: Bulls GM says Curry experienced chest pains in training camp last year

NEW YORK (AP) -- New York Knicks center Eddy Curry first experienced chest pains during training camp last year while he was a member of the Chicago Bulls, according to a published report.
The previously unreported health scare occurred last October, five months before the 22-year-old Curry was diagnosed with an irregular heartbeat, Bulls general manager John Paxson told SI.com in a report posted on the Web site Thursday.
``It was during a conditioning drill, and Eddy complained of chest pain and lightheadedness,'' Paxson told SI.com. ``We took him to the hospital.''
Paxson said that an exam provided no explanation for Curry's symptoms.
The 6-foot-11, 285-pound Curry ended up having his best season in the NBA, averaging a career-high 16.1 points. But he missed the last 13 regular-season games of last season and the playoffs after he was diagnosed with heart arrhythmia in March.
Paxson traded Curry to the Knicks last week after the center refused to take a DNA test to see if he's susceptible to a potentially fatal heart problem. Curry balked at the request, saying it violated his privacy, and the Bulls shopped him around.
``Everybody tried to make this an ethical employer-employee issue, which we never thought about,'' Paxson told SI.com. ``We wanted to do everything we possibly could to safely put him back on the floor. We were never allowed to do that.''
The trade last Tuesday sent Curry and veteran center Antonio Davis from Chicago to the Knicks for forwards Tim Thomas, Michael Sweetney and Jermaine Jackson. Curry officially joined the Knicks last Friday after a team of doctors hired by the club cleared him to play. An NBA cardiologist also reviewed the test results.
``It's hurting me that Eddy's now saying that we didn't care about him,'' Paxson told SI.com. ``It's painful because Eddy's a good guy. We were trying to do the right thing for him, and for us, but more for him. As time went on, people were trying to get in the middle of it or trying to convince him we were trying not to do right by him. And reading his comments now, I really do get the feeling that that he believes that we betrayed him.''
