View Full Version : Anyone Remember Charles Smith?

For those that are crying, why did we get LA, take a look at Pop's history. In the Mid-90's the Spurs took a shot on Charles Smith.

A guy that had similar numbers that LA had at Portland. But when he got here we soon learned that just like LaMarcus he had zero balls.

Sometimes you just have to roll the dice, thank heavens it's not a total deal where we have to eat a contract for the next 5 seasons. One more guaranteed and then he is very trade-able.

I would say the comparison is close. Charles Smith played a similar style of basketball to what LMA plays but the situation was a little different. Charles Smith was a 20-8 player on the Clippers but once he became a Knick his numbers dropped plus he had knee problems. By the time he came to the Spurs he was washed up and playing on terrible knees that eventually ended his career.

I was a young pup but I do remember it, mainly because of how we had two Smith's on the team. And that they have to have their first initials on the back of the jersey. C. Smith and S. Smith.

Smith could play serious ball when he didn't have knee issues. Him and Danny Manning were quite the duo back then. Cheap Sterling shipped him to NYK for fat Stanley Roberts.

Oh whoops. Disregard my post. Spurs had two Charles Smiths.. one in the mid 90's (whom OP was referring to) and one in the early 2000s (which I was referring to).

think that might have been Pop's first trade, or first big trade, as GM. Horrible trade for a washed up older big with chronic knee problems. Very similar to when the Spurs traded a productive Frank Brickowski to Milwaukee for a older, washed up Paul Presley with chronic knee problems.

I distinctly remember that play. I kept thinking "Man that must be demoralizing". It seemed like it was dowhill from there for him.

Smith hadn't scored above 15 PPG since 1990-1991. The Spurs signed him in the fall of 1995 after he was a TOSB. Comparison fail. :lol

Nah man, the Clippers got Mark Jackson in that deal. If the Knicks never made that deal they probably ring in 94 and/or 95 when Jordan was playing baseball.

That's the first thing I think of whenever I hear his name.

He'll never live that down.

Watched '99 last night now if LA had Malik Rose balls we'd be just fine.

That Charles Smith was done before he set foot in SA. LMA was coming off a great season in Portland and was probably the most coveted FA the off season before he arrived.

I liked Charles "Spider" Smith though. Kind of a bigger, more talented J. Simms.

That trade almost caused Pop his job.

That was a 3 team deal bro. I only talked Big for Big and yes Mark Jackson was also part of that deal but also so was Doc Rivers and Bo Kimble.

Lamarcus is still talented & healrhy just doesnt know when to use it . He psyches himself out games. Its all mental.

Without googling it wasn't this the 1996 season? So literally between the Rodman and Duncan teams it was Charles Smith who was DRobs PF.

Also I remember JR Reid being on the early 90s teams, but surely it wasn't him they got Smith for?

Yes, they traded JR Reid and Brad Lohaus for Charles Smith and Monty Williams. Spurs also gave up their draft pick in the historic 96 draft (knicks got a nobody in it though).

I remember.

I remember getting excited, that the Spurs and Dave were finally going to get the type of player they needed.

Then they got Charles Smith, not the rumored Charles Oakley.

Blackjack was pissed.

Still think he got mugged several times on that play. If he'd just have made that layup the Knicks probably stop the Bulls first 3-peat.

Spiderman was the one I remember, too. I was 8 years old. Good player, don't know why we didn't keep him, I guess to get S-Jax into the fray more which worked out well for us the next year I think.

It wasn't missed on the medical, the Spurs actually held him and Monty out of the first half of their first game threatening to kill the trade over Smith's physical until the Knicks agreed to "considerations" ie $$$ handed over to keep the Spurs from cancelling if I remember right
