Look at those elite teams. Brighton, Newcastle, Huddersfield, Burnley, West Bromwich, Watford, Bournemouth, Stoke City, Swansea, Crystal Palace, Leicester......
That's why the PL is the best league in the world. You won't see any 6-0 scores here. Everyone is evenly matched (evenly shit). Most competitive league in the world. Ronaldo and Messi would do fuckall against Premier League defenses.

There are actually 5-6 big teams, and those occupied first 6 places last season. But yes, teams like Leicester or or now third league Blackburn Rovers can win it from time to time. Argentine league is even more evenly matched, big teams lose category, half season tournaments are very unpredictable too, all teams have their chances. I think Brazilian league is quite even too.

the PL has fake parity, I remember seeing this graphed on tv this summer, but can't remember where. anyway, look at the top 8 variation throughout the years, significantly less then germany, spain or italy. Leicester was an enormous outlier.

Depth.
No more K. Walker and Danny Rose is wanting to leave. This wing combo gave Kane, Ericksen, Deli Ali tons of room in mid field. Rose and Walker were the fastest pair of wings in the world. The combination of the Champions League and EPL is too tough with the injuries all teams experience for a team like Tottenham. This is not Man U, MC, or Chelsea. It's a step below Arsenal and Liverpool. Losing Toby A at FB is now taking its toll as well. Ericksen, Ali and Kane are exhausted and without their wing tandem.
Christian Ericksen may be the most fit player in the world. But 2 marathons a week... No.
Take a look at my last champions league repost.
Pooch has already conceded they are done as contenders in the EPL and will struggle for a top 4 finish.

Needs to be both. They need to stay afloat in the EPL.
Tottenham's best players will be vulnerable for a swoop in if they don't make the top 4. You did not think Chelsea or Arsenal were better. Not looking so good now. Arsenal now benefits from that patsy Europa league group stage where their B team is good enough. Winter comes a little more than 1/3 through and the drag of how tough it is for teams like Tottenham become apparent. You have to have depth to do well in both. Especially with injuries that are inevitable.
Still hoping.

Also, RM did not take Tottenham's ability to counter seriously. BD did not either the first game. The second game, BD was flat out awful in their own stadium. Dortmund did not deserve to go forward, they have deep problems.

With amount of $ MC, MU, and Chelsea can spend... It's tough. Now Liverpool is putting forth more money. Then Arsenal. And lastly Tottenham if you look at ability to spend. The top 6 for some time overall. Big drop off after that. Everton spent a whole lot this year and it's not come together.

Salah's touch and speed declined as he got tired, noticeably in this particular game. Salah is having a great run and is playing a lot, especially in Mane's absence thru injury. Couthino and Klopp don't see eye to eye. Which is too bad. Liverpool is actually relevant again because of Klopp. But he will try and over manage. Yep.
Very consistent. But still some shakiness on defense.
They can be handled in the Champions League though if they immediately try to win the ball back after losing it. This is how they have been scored on. They rush to retake possession and get stretched. Or get caught piled up. But they definitely keep their spacing on D better than last year.

Stones is injured. That's the main reason they've been scored upon. Mangala is dog shit and Otamendi is only half a player without his sidekick. But, as far as City goes, the best defense is a good offense. They don't give opponents many opportunities to score because the game is mainly played in the opponents half of the pitch. If you can't gain possession, you can't score. City will always be susceptible to the break always but unlike last year, teams are only netting around a quarter of those opportunities and those opportunities are far and few between.

Stones is valued mainly for getting the ball started down the field. He is very handy with the ball. Kompany is back and they still jump on it. The point is, it may work in the EPL, but the Champions League? You are going to find teams that will absolutely punish this behavior without a clearly superior ball possession team. Which Guardiola had at Barca... I don't think he has that team now. He has a very, very good EPL team. And it's more than just getting possession. But taking risks to regain possession immediately.
I guess this is more of a discussion concerning tactics used in different leagues. Adjustment is necessary. This is how Tottenham won their group quite easily. They showed they can counter. Dortmund and RM did not respect it because they play ball possession in the EPL. So they severely adjusted tactics. Sorry if I strayed, but people just don't post much here.
Oh; and we will see this weekend. MC v. Tottenham should be interesting. Deli Ali has hit a really bad stretch but Son has taken up some slack. Meanwhile, Silva is scoring for MC? What the hell?

Imo city are overrated because
1. they play football in a league of kickball and their defense sees little offensive variation
2. guardiola is good, but not great. His achilles heel is that he is too full of himself to realize that his system is situational, he has the golden boy syndrome like mourinho. Arrogant prick too.
3. they aren't pushed constantly by rivals so when they'll meet opposition they won't be as prepared as real madrid for example.
still they're a great team, and definately have a chance at the UCL.

The wings that brought them so much joy last year in the EPL are gone (yes you took Walker) Pooch made the horrible decision of trying to play with MC by pressing. Toby A and their two best central midfielders are gone, Wanyama and Sanchez, so Debruyne just cut them apart. I see why Pooch went for it, but it was disasterous. They tried to play with MC, big mistake.
Meanwhile, MC loses Silva for this game and his sub Gundogan finds perfect open spots and was a huge threat working very well within their system. Hard for a team like Spurs to deal with loaded teams like MC. I told this board why Spurs would have a hard time making the top 4 and it's coming to fruition sadly. These are the types of teams that make the EPL work so don't be such a pompous winner. The Spurs got an eye for good young players but then get raided by teams like MC and Real Madrid when they don't make the final 4. Euro league awaits. Don't talk up the EPL so much if you root a team that can buy anything they want. You will possibly face other teams that can do the same in the UCL

son real madrid are slumping right now but nobody wants to play them come knockout time. they also won euro trophies compared to english clubs.. so imo let city win a UCL and then we'll talk tbh.
Real came into the RR thinking they could impose their will on a team that was talented at the time. Spurs had their full complement of players uninjuredd and punished Real for casually coming forward thinking Spurs had no skill. Ali, Ericksen, and Kane punished them as they punished Dortmund who was playing well in the first RR game and in the Budesliga at the time.
You are one of those guys who does not realize there are teams that present threats outside of La Liga. And you pontificate without watching the games. The EPL is 20 teams deep and there are some teams that play to just stay up because the $ is so good with the huge TV contracts. So they will play for draws and not to win. If you know who the teams are in the EPL, you can avoid the games. The Burnley-Brighton game was a good example. Neither cared especially about coming out with a draw. I made the mistake of watching it thinking Brighton (been there and watched them a level down) might try and win. Wrong. Horrible.
Every league has its teams that are irritating and characteristics that are the antithesis of a good watch. La Liga with the players rolling around constantly upon being bitten by a fly, Italy, with teams that flat out don't run and players that can play into their 90s, Ligue 1 just being a bunch of bad teams with some good young players that leave. On the whole I will take the EPL and Bundesliga. But I can see how anyone might hate soccer after going through an old Stoke City (Tony Pulis) v. West Brom (fired Tony Pulis)match, it's horrible. Soccer/Football as a whole can be terrible if it's played poorly because it is an extraordinarly difficult game. And it's easy to teach a team how to foul and draw.
I sometimes have a very difficult time watching the WC because some National teams with good players just don't play enough together and the play is not as good as the Club teams.

Wait, I'm confused. All the talk this summer was how Trippier was the better player and Walker fell out of favor at Tottenham. Is this true or false?
It's not really about the money entirely. Man City could out spend anyone if they so choose because their owner is mega wealthy. The problem is the Financial Fair Play act that won't allow teams to spend more than they earn. In other words, the books have to be balanced or serious fines and spending caps will likely occur. City knows about this all too well.
I believe City is on the same level as the Barcelona's, RM's and BM's, not a step or two behind because they hail from the EPL and there isn't a so-called diversity of playing styles that helps prepare teams for UCL competition. I think there style of soccer matches up well with most of the big clubs. The only team I'm not too keen on playing is Juventus because they have a world class goalie and if they get an early lead, they'll park 11 men in the box and sit on it.

Trippier is one of the best crossers of the ball in the world. The guy is amazing at volleying crosses. And... That's about it. That's an important it. Walker was keen to leave IMO because Rose, on the other side, was getting more attention at taking defenders on and getting into the box. But thinking Trippier can replace Walker from a speed pov is ridiculous. Pooch, knew this but thought that they could live with Rose blossoming. Well now Rose is healthy and is keen to leave it appears. He has not returned to last year's level.
You watched the game, you saw what Sane did to Trippier. Total speed mismatch. I think this MC team is hugely talented. They get injuries or leave a guy out and the replacement fills in perfectly. Tottenham can't keep up with this deep talent late. Injuries will happen and guys get tired. They put a lot into the UCL. Now the payback occurs. Gotta hope that Chelsea, Liverpool, and Arsenal falter. You read what I wrote early and you thought Spurs were better. The season is very long. Too long for Tottenham possibly. Maybe when Aldeweireld and Wanyama return from injury and Sanchez(bad boy) come back things will turn around. Maybe Rose gets back into last year's form and takes pressure of Ali and Ericksen. Maybe Lamella.... Maybe, maybe, maybe.
Walker has fit in very well as he has got so much talent around him the pressure is not as great. And that F'r is fast and can get good crosses in. Then he has Pep in his ear constantly guiding him. Walker has not even broken a sweat with this group they are so good.
The league is so over.
Man U is just not close to the neighbor's. Frankly, with Liverpool playing well with Coutinho returning to form they could win 2nd. Mane, Salah, Coutinho ... Christ... It's not easy following teams who can't match the $ and get raided. Now the UCL with the firepower on the other teams... If they get into form... This should be fun (not for Tottenham):depressed

Harry Kane is about to break Alan Shearer's goal record before the break. It's not even close right now because of Kane's chase. Salah has 3 other guys on his team who will score at anytime. And Tottenham is in the same battle as Liverpool for 4 th spot. If Pogba does not return to form for Man U, I could see, Man U, Chelsea, Liverpool, Arsenal, and Tottenham all vying for the last 3 spots behind dominant MC. It will be interesting. With Tottenham and Arsenal being the most vulnerable if injuries occur. If Sanchez or Kane go down, over for those teams.

Kane is on a tear, it's his to lose. And of course it's tied to the second half ya Fckn wanker. I'm telling you where it stands NOW. And it's pretty clear if Sanchez does not play on Arsenal they are done. The guy is an ass but he still works his rear off. This will does not go unnoticed. Goalkeeping was really bad.
Liverpool was much sharper in the beginning and that was the difference. MC with a pretty furious comeback though.
And this game illustrates the strengths and weaknesses of both teams. MC pressing early and taking horrible angles with the big speed Liverpool possess. Chamberlain running right thru the middle and scoring because MC takes pressing angles in their own third? No respect for really fast guys Liverpool had up front. Take them on directly instead of shepherding them away from goal and buying time for help?

He got involved on the yellow card given to Deli Ali as well that was a horrible simulation. The acting was so bad I'd have given him red just because. That being said, Spurs out played Liverpool 2nd half. Salah dancing thru the Spurs fullbacks at the end illustrates how badly the Spurs need Toby A. back. I think Pooch is punishing him further after he declined to resign after his injury. The guy is ready to go and needed. But Pooch fails to play him.

I don't care how much this board disavows Klopp, Salah is an absolute perfect fit for his style. He hustles the entire game, is fast as well as quick and has a very good group to help him out. Mahrez is also a top player on a less talented team. He's not as fast a Salah but is very elusive and has made Vardy's speed relevant. Vardy would be off the team without Mahrez. L City would be in a relegation fight if not for Mahrez. Liverpool was able to sell Couthino because they have Salah who can also handle distribution duties. Van Dyk is on Liverpool because of Salah. This might be enough to get Liverpool top 4. Their back just got better. We will see if Van Dyk can fit in, he has got the talent for sure.
Both Salah and Mahrez are top notch players.

Tottenham beat their rivals. Kane could have had 3 headers.
Salah got an amazing pass from Firmino, but Salah had already assisted.
Very different players but they got 2 things in common.
1) They both can score and 2) they both are relentless. Kane is one of the hardest working center forwards in the world. Salah looks like he is in heaven playing for Klopp. Salah does not stop. And he appears to be a really good teammate.

They won the FA cup one year.
This is a fun contest.
The English FA needs to get rid of that other stupid cup that has a new sponsor name every year. Also Rochdale tied Tottenham on a late equalizer when Toby A. headed the ball directly to a Rochdale player. Now Rochdale will visit Wembley. For a 1st league team in the relegation zone that's an incredible amount of money they will pull in. I can't believe Rochdale are two leagues down and might get relegated to the lowest league that people even keep track off.

Aubemayang, Arsenal's big pickup in the front is a loose cannon. He scored a really nice goal so far but the guy is just lost.
I don't really see what he is thinking, could be a cancer. He needs to be slapped. Wenger is just sitting on the bench pouting. Down 2-1 to Brighton and Arsenal could still win the game thru talent but they are rudderless. They can't even form a wall, they are all griping at each other.
So yep, you will get a nice laugh. If not the score, then the players behavior.

I watched the whole boring thing.
Hazard was lone up front. Conte finally brought on a true forward to hold the ball up
Giroud, and then he subbed Hazard for Morata both incredibly late, past the 80th minute. MC controlled the game and Chelsea let them. Chelsea had maybe 3 shots on goal. Conte sees a superior team and just tried to steal a draw.
Conte sat down most of the game, had almost none of his usual histrionics.

Oh.
sorry ole boy.
You did not make that entirely clear. All I can say since I stopped watching is, 1-0.
In me you got a guy who loves American college "football", basketball, others And....
Appreciates the game of "soccer" played at a hig level. I have been asked to play in leagues, got my "FIFA" knockoff card, and then found out how difficult and great the game is. I was basically asked to play because I can run for 45 minutes, and then do it again after a 10 minute break.
Take away from soccer: The skill level required is off the charts. And add to that, running in a way that can only be compared to basketball without time outs or FThrows. These are the fittest athletes in the world, and at the same time have to have the touch and power that a golfer must have except you gotta remain good while exhausted. The stopping starting, short sprints, longer dedicated runs to fill a gap, and then touching, passing, shooting in 3-d is extraordinaryly difficult. Unlike football, you can't be a huge strong individual and then have a coach find, you make you mean, teach you, and you play one position. I can't see how anyone can start actually playing for the first time with a ball at 16 years old, become good enough to play at the highest levels. (Too much early skill muscle memory involved) Plenty of Americans get this, but give it up at an "early" age to play some other sport. I first kicked a soccer ball at 21 in a league in Austin then San Antonio. No way I could really contribute except on defense, and then I had to go through a learning curve on a different stance than basketball "after nutmegging" and not not being able to use the hands. The easiest thing to learn was heading the ball.
I did become useful in that the fields were gigantic and we played in the summer ((very hot) Guys that grew up with the game were not in the type of shape I was. Few could last a full half with having significant walk time. So I ended up playing entire games. Which aided my running shape and I got to use new muscles. I learned where to be to fill obvious gaps and to harass the opponents best midfielder into giving up the ball. Make him run. Last 15 minutes of each half I could actually do something crude offensively against dead legged opponents.
-Autobiography terminated.

Klopp is a perfect fit for Liverpool football.
He knows eventually they must win something, but in the meantime, they MUST play open football. Their fans demand it. Liverpol lost to MU with the Mourinho system in full display today, but they went down fully attacking. Liverpool must have had ~ 15 corners. Liverpool has a huge presence in China and basically around the world. If Klopp actually wins something with this group, he will be there eternally.
Manchester United. One thing. Just win. If the Mourinho system gets them an EPL title, they are good. Which is daunting for him because he finds himself up against Pep again. They would take a CL championship, but they fully expect to be dominate in the EPL ala the Alex Ferguson manner. I see a long period of disappointment for MU.

You gotta have the quality to put quality in the right place. Pooch would play Valencia and Young over Trippier and Davies every day, no brainer. MU can keep or buy who they want, Totttenham can't. So I root for a team that can't buy top players. And if players become too good, you are forced to sell them. You get injured on MC, and your job could be gone because your backup is better than most of the 1st teamers on the vast majority of the league.
And so it goes. This is not unique to the EPL either. Do you have a prediction on what year Bayern will fail to win a Bundesliga title? There are certain aspects of true "competition" you have to accept when rooting for a team that has little history (and 6th place in their own league in financial ability) Just finish top 4 every year before the next move up is remotely possible. (Pull a LC when the league is incredibly bad.)

Salah played at Chelsea. Scored 2 goals. He was on the 2014-15 team that won the PL. Its cold in Canada.
This is why Klopp deserves credit. He knew. And he surrounded Salah with the right guys. Possibly the fastest player in the league, Mane, and Firmino with the blinding white teeth. Klopp let Couthino go and then picked up Virgil Van Dyk in the back so now he has his Hummels type defender.

Mourinho has again proven his brand of player treatment can lead to very bad displays. Man U was completely afraid of being out of position and making mistakes. The leader of the team sits sulking from the sidelines while the other players blame each other. They played scared to screw up.... With no real leader on the field because no one trusts the coach. This guy must be one of the best coaches at ruining players. They can clearly produce big wins, but along with that the mood creates self-doubt and some really really bad displays. Ferguson knew the whip and carrot, Mourinho only knows the whip.
The guy clearly has a system that can win... Just be aware he can destroy teams and individuals after his desultory habits set in on the team.

They play very different roles for their teams. Neither team would want to trade off but Salah is definitely more valuable to an open market. He can do so much. I hope he can repeat his display. And I hope Tottenham catches Liverpool this year.

Kane is playing injured.
MU did a great job bullying Tottenham.
Gotta give Mourinho credit. He saw how the ref called the game and beat up a much less physical team.
8 straight times the bid ends in the semis.
But...
The top 4 is a real possibility for the third year in a row.
For the amount of $ they have to spend compared to what is really the big 5, it’s a huge step up.
He shoudln't be playing then, don't care how the backup is. He was inffective completely and I've seen him disappear in big times enough not to give him the benefit of the doubt.
Tottenham needs more than top 4 finishes after the way they've been the last few years; they're just sounding like 2008-2013 Arsenal. Shocking they haven't won a cup in a decade given the style they play.

They just don’t have the money. Their style is probably why they have not won. Honestly winning the EPL when the entire league was bad and Leicester city won was a huge chance lost. The other stuff is secondary.
Bale, Modric, .... If you are too good, you leave.
And actually I agree Kane should not have played in this game or the Brighton game. He was ineffective in both. Just leave him on the bench and go without a true CF. They had some success with that in prior games. And if Kane is in form and ineffective in a game, then Erickson or Deli Ali or Son will be effective. Kane is very good at what he does. Strong on the ball, get off quick shots with pace, good speed, good in the air, good at distribution off of gaining longball possession, endless energy on defense. He’s a very nice CF. How long he will be is in doubt because he plays with ankle injuries. Life as a star on a lesser team.
If you are referring to the National Team in disappearances, They are just not good enough the whole way through. And imo their current manager is horrible even though they have had some decent results. I expect Rooney will be granted permission to play on the team eventually.

Liverpool is screwing around in the EPL and could lose a spot. At the time of this post they have 2 games left, Chelsea and Spurs have 4. Chelsea still to play Liverpool. Liverpool could find themselves out of the top 4 if they keep up their poor form. They just tied Stoke 0-0 at home and were a Shawcross toepoke away from losing. Mane did not play, Salah had to play the middle with his back to defenders... that’s not effective for this team.
Three draws in the last 4 EPL games against inferior opponents. Only 2 games left and one of those at Chelsea.

they're going all in on the UCL. can't blame them, it's a once in a generation chance for a team like liverpool.

Its a well calculated gamble.
They havd some history of doing well in the CL while not living up to expectations in the English top division.
Its a good thing for Tottenham so I'm fine with it.

And Tottenham is in the champions league with a horrific 1-0 win over Newcastle. Helped by Huddersfield (away) staying up by tying Chelsea 1-1.
The first time the MIGHTY SPURS HAVE EVER GRADUATED 3 YEARS IN A ROW FROM THE EPL TO THE CHAMPIONS LEAGUE.
If Deli Ali and Kane’s form are what England gets this summer, they don’t get past the group stage. Kane scored a very cute goal on a great pass but was otherwise not himself today. Kane needs a rest. His ankle continues to hamper his speed, strength, value in the air. He is not close to the same player. Deli Ali has had an overall dissatisfying EPL season.
Eriksen is by far the MVP on Spurs last half.
Anyways, looks like we keep most of the guys the big boys might have wanted. Just hope Eriksen does not get yanked like Modric. I wonder what happens with Danny Rose. He showed nothing to prospective $ spenders with his play after his injury. But Pep swept up Kyle Walker while Rose was better... I don’t even know if Pooch wants Rose back. Rose is another out of form player for England. And He has had plenty of time to get better, well rested.
