View Full Version : Is gutting the team for CP3 worth it?

Call me crazy but I'm fine with CP3 having the ball in his hands at least half of the time. Kawhi can get easier looks. If he can't exploit a mismatch or break down the defense, then Kawhi takes over, and vice versa. Seems like a no-brainer in my opinion.

I'm on the fence like I said. Lots of variables though and definitely legit concerns. It's not a bad plan at all, just no slam dunk (and probably futile anyways with the money variable).
I'm just legit shocked that not only on ST but even in the media that people are discussing fit at length. Come a long way from just caring about name value tbh.

Less energy spent on offense, might also allow Kawhi to be even better on d.

Kawhi is also one if not the best at "get your shot" type of guy with the time running down.

No one is beating gsw in the west.
GS can be beaten. They are a smart & talented team but they aren't invincible. The Spurs gameplan would have challenged them this year. Unfortunately, KL was a big part of it. Hell, if CLE gets their shit together, they can beat the Warriors too. Lebron is going to have to check KD though.

Not going to count Mills, Simmons, and Dedmon because they're about to get paid. So it's unrealistic keeping them. Only Simmons is worth the money. Ginobili? He can come back for the vets min or gtfo
I'd rather get rid of Pau than DG but Pau's contract is harder to trade. There is some language in there that makes it more difficult to do so. TP is other most logical piece to be salary dumped. He's not going to play again. Pau is serviceable and fits in to the scheme of beating GS.
Having CP3 on the court will greatly improve the Spurs' other players, namely Aldridge. KL can reduce his workload with Paul on the court too. This is a no-brainer. Like I've mentioned before, the only hang up is his tendency to get weird injuries. Especially with his hands. His flailing around on the court annoys me to no end but he's competitive as hell and a vocal leader. The Spurs desperately need someone to direct the offense. I think Manu would come back for a chance to play with him.

On the surface losing Mills/Dedmon/Pau/TP for CP is no big deal. Like someone said Dedmon / Pau / TP either due to matchup or injury didn't play basically after RD1.
Plus it allows you to take fliers (more forces you to) on different players that may be younger and more niche / custom built.
The issue becomes, like many of us questioned early, the fit. Any superstar would have fit concerns and not just on Spurs. People questioned Bron Wade Bosh fit even though we all knew the insane talent level.
But ball dominant players are EASILY the most difficult players to fit in. It's legit concern even though the talent level would go up.
I'm torn. It's not a bad plan because the players Sa would be losing aren't a huge deal. But age and money and more importantly fit are concerns. I'm not too worried about money because if CP3 is an awful fit he's still immensely tradable.
Elite talent trumps fit (James and Wade didn't fit, yet still won 2 championship in 4 years) and that's being oversold anyway. Two ball dominant players can work fine together, so long as at least one is a knockdown shooter. In this case, both are.
Exchange Parker with Green, because they're never moving the former. The latter can't be replaced, at least not initially, but unlike the former, who'd require attaching a good asset, he'd return one.

Maybe Kawhi can help him with advice on strengthening his hands. I read that Kawhi's team/trainers said that even though Kawhi's hands are big, they found that they weren't very strong (explains the hand injuries that he's had in the past), so last off-season they worked on strengthening his hands. You could see it from game 1 or 2 of the regular season where he was just ripping the ball away from people.

Actually, they really only won one. I'll never give them credit or acknowledge 2013 as the Spurs handed them that one.
They only one that was without question was the one they won against that bitch Durant. That was a legit convincing finals win. However, the Spurs got screwed the round before, so maybe OKC shouldn't have even been there in the first place. OKC got what they deserved. It sucks that Durant may now get one after hopping on the Warriors bandwagon.

Pop stuck with Bonner until Bonner retired. He won't trade or waive Tony unless Tony makes that decision. If you don't realize that you've not really paid attention.
That's a fallacy. Bonner didn't want to retire. He wanted to keep playing but his role was taken up by Bertans and Bonner was unable to get a contract from another team. The league in general, all NBA teams forcibly retired him when he didn't get even a training camp invite from a team a la Rasual Butler.

Did Bonner retire or not? If he retired, then Pop stuck with him through his contract. What's hard to understand about that? The Spurs and Bonner were no longer in any agreement, and Pop didn't trade or waive him.

We're probably the 2nd best team in the league and GSW has 1 of its top 4 players under contract for another 2 seasons. With 2 more years of prime Paul left, this signing doesn't really make sense. We'll be relying on an injury from GSW, instead of retooling with a player with a big upside (Murray) & developing pieces on the roster (Bertans as well as possibly Simmons). We've got some intriguing picks overseas (Hanga & Milutinov) & the FO normally does a good job of signing underrated role players to good deals. Kawhi would still have 5+ more years left of his prime in 2 years time, so better off bridging.

You know he didn't retire willingly. When it's October and you are a FA and no one wants to sign you.... then you retire. He didn't want to.

Exactly. DMC knows he's wrong. When his contract was up he was hoping the Spurs would re-sign him. When they didn't, he and his agent looked for other opportunities. When they didn't emerge, dude officially retired. He wanted to play and Pop didn't want him back. What is so hard to understand about that? Same thing happened to Robert Horry.

Pop did stick with Bonner through his contract. Bonner is retired. Truth be told Bonner could have been waived 2 years ago.

I guess for me it comes down to this, no one expects CP3 to play for the minimum ala David West to play here but if he really wants to get a ring, he will help the Spurs stay intact as much as possible. So if he forces us to gut the team to get him then, no. However if he gives the Spurs the Ring chasing discount, not talking David West big, but something reasonable (a little bit more than Pau money) but not what he could get elsewhere then of course.

Overall I am indifferent to CP3.
The team is already going to lose depth regardless due to age, injuries, attrition, and guys getting paid who have never gotten the big NBA contract.
The real question however, is who of these 4, currently under contract (not a FA) gets traded: Pau, LMA, Tony or Danny. It's likely two of them that have to go.

Tony can probably be excluded, and I almost have to wonder what circumstances LMA signed under. It was a big decision for him to come over, and I just hope Pop didn't make any promises to him, especially given some of his performances.

Pau and Danny. The Spurs have shown great loyalty to the big 3. If TP can comeback and be somewhat his old self that would be great for their second unit. Despite LMA's struggles I think he will bounce back. The goal will be to keep his confidence up. Just watching him play you can tell whether he's feeling good or not. CP3 has shown to be great floor general and should be able to help LMA. Signing CP3 at 32 means win now. Trading LMA even for a top 15 pick will set this team back in the quest for a title.

Agreed.
Posters have to start realizing that Green hasn't shown any signs of improving or fixing his broken shot and his defense will continue to regress now that he'll be 30.
Danny is no longer a starting caliber player and we need to move on asap after his consistently shit play for the last 3 years. No more offensive liabilities stars can hide and rest on....
Green in the WCF:
31.6 3P%, 90 ORtg, 123 DRtg, -40 +/-, 4th in MPG but 9th on PPG...
Green will be neutered against any good defensive team as evident in the Memphis and GS series. Take in the fact that he'll be 30 next season with his jumper regressing even more... :vomit:

It depends on your perspective. If you live in the here and now as most fans are but wont admit it, suffering from short term memory syndrome then you do it if you can make your team better short term. You could take Ticket 760's own Mike Taylor logic and go with the thought process " Listen we are not going to beat the warriors, so at least give me some sexy" Signing CP3 would accomplish that and we'd still be good enough to make it to the WCF Win or lose. That right there is all you can ask for, which is the oppurtunity.

He's been on the team longer than Kawhi, not to mention he's also been a starter for longer as well, I still don't see the Spurs dumping Green, no matter how much TheGreatYacht wants it.
Spurs could go into the meeting in July with the pitch of "we're can add you to a team that won 61 games, went to a conference finals, and has a top 7 player in the NBA who just turned 26,".
Moving Gasol, Forbes, and a 2018 1st to LAC would allow Paul to have a starting salary of about $30.45 million -if i'm not mistaken. That would allow for the spurs to keep Green and still have the MLE, and LLE.

gutting the team would've been addition by subtraction.
moving parker's contract this offseason should be priority #1, thought that last summer too.
it is not immovable by a long shot. parker fans kept saying how no one would take him... but that he was invaluable to us :lol
gilbert arenas got moved, so did joe johnson.
