Paul Krugman - New York Times Blog
Pure Class Warfare, With Extra Contempt
JUNE 23, 2017 3:24 AM June 23, 2017 3:24 am 736

The Senate version of Trumpcare – the Better Care Reconciliation Act – is out. The substance is terrible: tens of millions of people will experience financial distress if this passes, and tens if not hundreds of thousands will die premature deaths, all for the sake of tax cuts for a handful of wealthy people. What’s even more amazing is that Republicans are making almost no effort to justify this massive upward redistribution of income. They’re doing it because they can, because they believe that the tribalism of their voters is strong enough that they will continue to support politicians who are ruining their lives.

In this sense – and in only this sense – what we’re seeing now is a departure from previous Republican practice.

In the past, laws that would take from the poor and working class while giving to the rich came with excuses. Tax cuts, their sponsors declared, would unleash market dynamism and make everyone more prosperous. Deregulation would increase efficiency and lower prices. It was all voodoo; the promises never came true. But at least there was some pretense of working for the common good.

Now we have none of this. This bill does nothing to reduce health care costs. It does nothing to improve the functioning of health insurance markets – in fact, it will send them into death spirals by reducing subsidies and eliminating the individual mandate. There is nothing at all in the bill that will make health care more affordable for those currently having trouble paying for it. And it will gradually squeeze Medicaid, eventually destroying any possibility of insurance for millions.

Who benefits? It’s all about the tax cuts, almost half of which will go to people with incomes over $1 million, the great bulk to people with incomes over 200K.

So, is this bill good for you? Yes, if you meet the following criteria:

1.Your income is more than $200,000 a year
2.You have a job that comes with good health insurance
3.You can’t imagine any circumstances under which you lose that job or income
4.You don’t have any family members or friends who don’t meet those criteria
5.You have zero empathy for anyone else

The set of people who can check all these boxes is not a winning political coalition. But Republican leaders believe that their voters are tribal enough, sufficiently walled off from information, that they’ll ignore the attack on their lives and keep voting R – indeed, that as they lose health care, get hit with crushing out-of-pocket bills, see their friends and neighbors face ruin, they’ll blame it on Democrats.

I wish I were sure that this belief was false.

It's not going to die on it's own. It's the law and will remain so until changed. Republicans can either govern or they can't.

I always wondered why Romney ran on repealing the ACA and slashing Medicare. He probably would have gotten elected if he did the bait and switch on healthcare like Trump.

So far, in what is supposed to be a honeymoon period for the Republican president with both houses of Congress in the same camp...

Its a huge no. they can't.
Possibly because they really don't believe in governing. The free market, a swamp infested with brand new vermin will save us all. Really, what's governing all about?

Don't tell us what we can and cannot do...

But, but, ... look at the stock market, America is working and winning so much now.

"2.You have a job that comes with good health insurance"

not totally true. The Repug taxcut bill places annual and lifetime payout limits on employees' group plans. (aka, more profits for insurers)

So don't get real and/or long-term sick or injured, because your employer's insurance gonna bail.

harvard is an outlier, cherry picked by a Trash fellator

"Trump’s 48 percent approval rating in the survey is considerably better than in other polls.

Trump is deep underwater in the RealClearPolitics poll average, at 40.6 approve and 54.1 disapprove."

And several polls have and have had Trash below 40%

I bet the abused, deceived, conned, duped, ignorant, screwed-repeatedly-and-forever Repug tribe will support Trash as "witch hunted" out of office no matter how solid and widespread the evidence is.

Leave it at that.

Stay in the shallow end.

What ever happened to the conservative merits of:
-work hard
-rugged individual responsibility for oneself
-overcome a tough situation with savvy resorcefullness
-taking care of yourself through persistent , stubborn accomplishment allows one to become a contributing member of a great nation...
-the power of realistic goals and expectations
-make something instead of taking something
-The importance of Leading and risk taking in building a stable society

teach a Fckn man to fish?

Now we got:

-The art of the sale (how to take money from stupid poor people)
-How to make dire situations appear to be a W (no thinking allowed)
-The importance of lying and deceit
-The world around you is poisoned (how to dig a hole and survive)
-Survival (how to die old, bitter and alone in a hole)
-Quality time (how to bring back black lung for the hopeless)

<sigh> I've said this (to you) before but I'll do it again. Before he won I thought Trump won I thought he was a buffoon but I wanted him to win (I didn't think he would). I thought his election would be so distasteful to the Washington establishment that they would tone down the partisanship and maybe we'd get some bipartisan governing. Obviously I was wrong about that.

Since Trump won I haven't been singing his praises, he's still a buffoon. Enjoying your liberal tears is not the same thing as approving of Trump.

You really shouldn't talk about voter tribalism though considering how upset you are that Hillary (who you hated) isn't POTUS. I made several attempts after the election to ask board libs (including you) what they thought was wrong with the Democratic party and the consensus was nothing nothing is wrong everything is just peachy. If you ask me that's more tribal than me or Darrin laughing at liberal temper tantrums.

So I'll continue to just make fly by comments and enjoy the responses. :cry You don't have anything insightful about how Russia stole the election :cry..:lol it's good stuff.

That's pretty ridiculous to think Trump getting elected would make the parties work together when a Trump election virtually guaranteed the GOP run all of Washington. How was this going to work in your mind? That the GOP would cede some of the power they won? After eight years of obstruction of Obama at every turn they were going to all of a sudden work with the Democrats? McConnell trying to steal Obama's Supreme Court nomination and then succeeding in it with Trump's election was going to make them work with the Democrats? You sound as naive as those Kentucky Trumpers Vox interviewed who didn't think Trump would take away their healthcare.

Of course I'm upset that Clinton isn't president. As I have said many times before here, Clinton wouldn't have any power to do shit with Ryan controlling the house and with likely only a temporary senate majority after she would have been elected, based on the senate seats up for election in 2018. So she couldn't have done much damage to this country. And her neutered presidency would have likely ended in a landslide loss in 2020.

Your snark is funny considering you used to say Trump would govern as a Democrat. I'm the one who called it right, that he was a trojan horse for giving Ryan power. That Trump was too lazy to do anything but move out of the way and let Ryan do what he wanted. That everything that came out his mouth that you took to mean he was like a Democrat was a bold-faced lie.

I don't see why you aren't more pissed than the liberals are now that Trump is remaking the Republican party in his image. LOL that their plan is to run against the media in the 2018 midterms now. It's funny seeing you not at all concerned about Trump becoming Hugo Chavez north.. :lol But liberal tears :lol

Every time you asked what was wrong with the DNC I kept saying it was them trying to push Clinton at all costs despite her scandal and everyone hating her. How is that peachy?

LOL crying to me about Russia. That's djohn2oo8 pushing that. I didn't believe there was much to the collusion story until Trump fired Comey and started threatening him. Now he wants to fire Mueller too. How can this not look at least like a cover up to you? :cry But liberal tears :cry

Its still fun seeing liberals frustrated, you and snake know this.

The conservatives actually had a chance to get their ideas put into play. They know the current Health care bill is no better than Obamacare for the country, they know this. Yet passing it and declaring victory is a huge lie to achieve. Democrats failed to firmly admit it was defective in a number of ways. The Republicans follow suit. You will always have the extremes that really don't want any government health care, or health care for everyone that is not feasible.

The democrats are now just given a platter to just toss around and destroy because of the incompetence of the WH.
