View Full Version : It is not Only the undesirable San Antonio market that is killing Spurs in FA, tbh..

Two Things handicapping us even further..

(a) Kawhi not being part of any star cliques in a league where superstars collude together to form super-teams in a brazen fashion hurts..Leonard does everything on court and more, but his aloofness and reclusive nature means he's not about this recruiting thingie..

(b) Pop "players respect" factor has proven once again to be hollow: Superstars admire him.....but from afar. I do think that it's not only Aldridge who has concerns about their raw numbers getting depressed playing in a Spurs system (Paul chose Pringles over him :lmao)...

imo Paul went to Houston because he will be shielded from blame for the failings by Harden...in SA with Kawhi, as Kawhi is one of the most respected players in the media because of his quiet demeanor and two way play, he probably knew he would receive the brunt of the blame for any failings.

Kawhi wouldn't have transformed himself into the player he is today if he was a banana boat kind of guy. We also wouldn't have had this long run of excellence without PopaGOAT implementing the culture that's in place.

Yeah, it'd be nice to be a superteam destination but what we have isn't too shabby either, tbh.

remember PAFTO didn't expect kiwi to be a top player in the league when they traded, and RC wanted Valenciunas anyways. without the fluke of the #15 pick developing into a 1st team nba caliber player then Poop's antiquated cranky white old man antics and control freak tendencies get exposed as anathema to teambuilding in the modern NBA years ago...

Why so worried about where Paul went, or why?

Never wanted him to begin with. The guy has 2 decent years left at the best, is a poor performer in clutch situations, and acquiring him would have stunted the growth of Dejounte. Not to mention that he is often injured.

I can't see that situation work out well between Harden's ball dominance and CP3 being there. Glad all the talk of him coming to the Spurs is over tbqh.

I'd think a press hogging player would love to play next to Kawhi. He'd be happy to give up the spotlight.

Truth bomb. The only good move Buford has made in decades was a god damn fluke.

It's time for the Spurs to clean house, and Buford to get clean.

Don't care about star players not wanting to come to SA considering the Spurs have never won championships through major FA signings. If the Spurs win another title with Kawhi it will be because they developed young talent around him.

Relationships/connections matter in every walk of life, nothing new really. It is often not about your pedigree in vacuum..Paul chose a serial career playoff quitter/loser in the Harden/D'Antoni combo over Kawhi/Pop..

its not exactly breaking news that people want to be around and work with their friends but yeah kawhi having the personality of a garden hose prob doesnt help matters. not to mention despite how many people move here SATX just has a real bama big city vibe to it. it's not cool and never will be and that prob matters.

who cares, golden state's gonna win anyway

Nothing on this planet is stopping a healthy Kawhi. Not even 4 all stars with Iggy baby sittin them could dent him. Stay in big markets, play with your mates whatever, let your grandkids hang off every word when you tell them the story of how you almost became a team mate of Whi at one stage. :lol

^All it took was Zaza's foot, tbh.

Really though. Putting so much pressure on Kawhi will make it more likely that he breaks down come playoff time...

Kawhi doesn't offend anyone. His personality isn't the problem.

But the same can't be said for the control freak coach who once benched the team's best player in a crucial Game 6 in the playoffs just so that he can establish his own legacy.

Spurs should get Kelly Olynyk, he is cheap and could potentially attract the LGBT market.

Sorry, but the Twinks have effectively cornered the LGBT market.

I do think you have a point with concern (b). It was something that also concerned me about Lamarcus camp making so much noise about San Antonio affecting his game negatively.
Pop's system has grown larger than life, to the point other stars in the league (Durant among them) once talked about Kawhi in a disparaging fashion saying he was the product of the system and thus implying he's not at their level.

It's a new generation. The generation from Tim and Manu is retired, and Tony's generation is really old and Tony is injured with uncertainties about his play when he comes back.

It's basically roleplayers who want to join the Spurs bc Pop will put them in the best possible spot for them to get paid elsewhere. But stars? play in a system that depresses their stats naturally? Play second fiddle to a guy so quiet he doesn't talk to anyone, and who didn't have a relationship with his costar and teammate LMA? There is respect but I am not sure they want to sacrifice for the betterment of the team and take a backseat to Kawhi. It has to be someone who is a Spur at heart already or just youngsters drafted and homegrown.
