View Full Version : Favorite Tim Duncan Memory

Today is the 1-year anniversary of Tim Duncan's retirement. What is your favorite memory of The Big Fundamental?

Mine is actually when we won the 1997 lottery. I'll never forget seeing Boston's 2nd card being pulled at the #3 spot, then the Sixers at #2. I just lost it at that point. I thought getting TD was a pipe dream, so I was the happiest 17-year old on the planet.

Game 5 in the 2014 Finals when he pushed Ginobili in the head after Manu dunked on Bosh. It's like he knew it was over and 2013 was made right. It was perfect.

Yeah that was a special moment. I was lucky enough to be there. A surreal night!

I always loved the 3pt shot on the Suns. That was just classic. :flag:

I definitely remember him almost going to Orlando, but not him thinking about playing with Shaq and Kobe.

I only threw that in there because it would have been the equivalent of Kevin Durant, and entirely unthinkable in that era.

Anytime he played on defense. Looking at this current Spurs roster I'm very concerned about how bad the defense could potentially be.

2013 when he hit the floor as time was running out. I know it's not a happy memory but it left a mark for me. I can't articulate why exactly.

His first playoff game as a rook where he went ballistic and shat on the Suns for numerous possessions in a row. He was clearly something special from the get go

this is actually false. orlando was planning to sign both hill and duncan. mcgrady was plan b incase duncan opted to stay in SA, which he did.

During the lockout 1999. I go to Fill Life Fitness Center one evening with my 9 yo son to play some ball. Everyone is on one end of the court and Duncan is by himself shooting on the other end. My son's ball rolls down toward Tim. Noah runs down to it. Tim picks it up and asks Noah if he wants to play some one on one. He gives Noah the ball, lets him drive in for a lay up. Noah makes it and Tim says Aw, you beat me. Then Noah shags balls for him. Everyone in the gym wanted to be Noah.

Of course the three pointer against the PHX Suns in 2008, but even more so his massive fist pump after the shot went in. Epic moment of celebration from a typically reserved dude.

Another thing is just his rim protection in general. Was so memorable. Him trapping balls against the glass, towering over driving players and recovering to swat it away, doing that funny hobble defensive stance and shuffle. Totally miss his defense as another poster said.

His followup dunk against Timberwolves. In mid air, Timmy grabbed the ball with left hand, into his right hand and then dunked over a defender. That and the 3 high fives he gave me @ Kings vs Spurs.

Yeah, Mercer was one of 5 fellow lottery picks from the '97 draft class to be a teammate of TD.

That bat swat looked a little awkward tbh.

I'd imagine Federer smacking that vermin crosscourt within an inch of the baseline, or Nadal moonballing it into the Jumbotron.

Tennis balls don't actively try to dodge though. And a hand is a lot smaller than a tennis racket.

Too many to have one favorite. Here are a few that I didn't see mentioned already

In his rookie year vs the Bulls at the Alamodome, Jordan went behind Duncan and blocked his shot. The VERY NEXT TIME DOWN, Duncan helped on a Jordan post up and blocked MJ's shot. It stood out to me because it was Tim saying that he wasn't going to be intimidated by anyone.
His 2nd year, late in the regular season, against the Jazz he had a shot at the rim vs Malone and Ostertag. He missed it, grabbed the rebound, missed again, grabbed ANOTHER REBOUND, and SLAMMED it on both of them. That was one of my first "holy shit!" moments with him.
When KG hit him on the back of the head and he turned around and looked at him like, "what the fuck is wrong with you?"
Late in his career when DeMarcus Cousins tried to bully him "Imma bust his ass" and Duncan made him look foolish.
The shot over Shaq right before .4
In 2013 when LeBron had that monster regular season dunk over him, and then in Game 1 where he went out of his way to block LeBron's shot right at the beginning of the game.
The shot over Westbrook and Ibaka in 2014

Game 6 of the '03 WCSF - Ending the Lakers reign, on the road, in emphatic fashion, while Bryant and Fisher cried on the bench.

Game 6 of the '14 WCF - Just when it looked like what would be their final chance at glory was slipping away, after years of doing things right and not being able to catch a break when it was needed most, one last time he put them on his back and got them across the finish line.
