How Bad Is the Democratic Senate Map for 2018?
https://www.realclearpolitics.com/articles/2017/05/09/how_bad_is_the_democratic_senate_map_for_2018_1338 23.html
Every political junkie knows the Senate map is bad for Democrats. Over half of the Democratic caucus will be up for re-election, and some of these incumbents represent highly red states such as Montana, North Dakota, West Virginia, Indiana and Missouri. No party would want to go into a midterm defending a map like that.
This Is a Really Bad Democratic Map -- But It’s Not Unprecedented

The problem is when people are blinded by parties. People treat politics like it's the NFL. Defend "your guy" and run down the others just because of the letter after the name. Really can't see why anyone would register as a Republican or a Democrat.
Read the story about The Rock possibly looking at a presidential run. Really don't see much difference between history electing war hero's vs celebrities. Name recognition. I'd rather deal with the Al Franken, Reagan's of the us than career politicians.

First kid rock lyric that came to mind was:
"Got a business mind so if I lose the funk, I'll still be in the house getting paid like Trump"
Of the 33 senate seats up for election in 2018, 25 of them are Democrats' seats. Almost no way the GOP doesn't pick up senate seats in 2018.
They're unlikely to regain the senate but they're not going to lose seats en mass either.
Look at the special elections if you're looking for a tell. Red ruby states were within points.

Bad map...but not unpresedented.
In 2012 Democrats were competing in the exact same states that they will be next year, but they managed to gain two seats. That’s partially because of a favorable national environment -- President Obama won his second term that year. But bad Republican candidate recruitment also helped Democrats. In Missouri, Todd Akin lost to Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill partially because of his remarks on “legitimate rape.” Indiana Republican Richard Mourdock also faced some backlash for his comments on abortion. Additionally, strong candidates in Montana, West Virginia and North Dakota were able to beat Republicans in friendly territory. That added up to a good year for Democratic Senate candidates.
Two way street. Trump makes things worse for republicans not better.

Yesterday you said my schtick was answering questions with questions.
The way to definitively determine if it is Chump is to respond to his question with a question. If it is Chump he'll respond to your question with a question in which case you respond with to his question with your original question...and so on. If this process continues for 10 pages it is definitely Chump.
Pretty sure you're describing TSA here. That's his schtick.
Today you say my schtick is repeating myself over and over, which you didn't even get right because what you quoted were not the same at all.

Your fathers Rep. party is dead. The likelihood of a modern day McCain being newly elected are slim. Today's younger republicans are actually libertarians in disguise. Its too bad they have to deal with all the ex Military with their antique beliefs.

Of course. Hypocrisy is a tenant of American Fascism.
Ironically, Liberalism, in gist, is the desire for everyone to be as free from government intervention into our private lives as possible.
But dem Fascists- "Fuck the police...except for when we need them." "Fuck the government...except for when OUR side is in power." Hypocrisy and the American Left go together like PB+J and elementary school kids are pointing out their obvious, and glaring, flaws in their "logic" and rhetoric.

Since you have benefitted more than others, do you not have a moral obligation to pay back into the system that created your wealth?

"We've been repairing this bridge for 50 years, maybe we should stop"

It is flawed, because it is a problem that is worth addressing, and the evidence that actually is available shows that the social programs you don't like, actually pretty much do the things they were designed to do, i.e. make life less hellish, and provide a net to catch people so they can pick themselves back up.

Among other things. Rough estimate this year will be a bit less than 1% of family net income. We are concentrating on paying off debts (student loans, a stretch of unemployment, and an uninsured hospitalization years ago).
Our family does things together, through a local atheist organization, though. Wheelchair ramp builds, food giveaways for homeless, picking up trash at an adopted stretch of roads, etc.
Also ironically, we used to work/cook every Sunday night at a local homeless shelter run by a Baptist church, but got too busy for that. I think it was good for our kids to sit down at the table with everybody and eat the same meal. We let others do the praying thing, of course.
I will increase the charity budget next year, as we anticipate having a lot of debt paid off this year, and a marked increase in income is in the offing.
Your point?

Depends. If it's misery brought on by themselves, i.e, drug addiction or unwanted babies, I think Americans need to be held accountable for their actions. Not just fear of legal repercussions, but personal-life repercussions as well. If it's misery brought on by circumstances they don't control, absolutely.
Case in point, Oregon, in a decade is going to have both sides of misery. They are going to have self-created misery that was more enabled by the batshit crazy law of decriminalizing smack, toot, molly, et. al. Despite the batshit theory, this is enabling and is going to make a bad issue even worse by eliminating accountability since the fear of consequence has been removed. Now we're fostering a culture of enabling diseased individuals and increasing that population while creating an extremely miserable place that is unsafe to live in because the junkie population will grow and, in conjunction, the burglary and theft related crime rates will sky rocket. I can't feel sorry for anyone who makes the decision to get hooked on dope and drugs, you and only you can be responsible for your own willful actions. I can feel sorry that an entire population was thrown into the toilet for an ill-thought, batshit crazy law. Oregon will be a statewide version of Demo utopias like Chicago, Houston and the 99% of California the elitists don't inhabit.

Portugal decriminalised drugs 14 years ago – and now hardly anyone dies from overdosing

'It was the combination of the law and these services that made it a success. It's very difficult to find people in Portugal who disagree with this model.'
When Portugal decided to decriminalize in 2000, many skeptics assumed that the number of users would skyrocket. That did not happen. With some exceptions, including a marginal increase among adolescents, drug use has fallen over the past 15 years and now ebbs and flows within overall trends in Europe. Portuguese officials estimate that by the late 1990s roughly one percent of Portugal's population, around 100,000 people, were heroin users.
Today, "we estimate that we have 50,000, most of them under substitution treatment," said Goulão before adding that he's recently seen a small uptick in use of the drug, predominantly among former addicts that got clean. This reflects Portugal's tenuous economic condition, he contends.
Time and again, policies that treat people decently, humanely, work, and provably so.

I'd like to believe it would work, but we're talking different cultures. Sober Americans are very different than sober Euros. We're over entitled, materialistic, selfish and ungrateful. This is true, otherwise we'd not be the consumers we are, the selfie and social media wouldn't control people's lives and we all wouldn't be buried under mounds of debt.
And, unfortunately, I live near Ground Zero for dereliction, in a massively tolerant state that has multiple, multiple programs. Compared to when I lived in San An, there are thousands and thousands more visibly homeless and displaced YOUTHFUL drug addicts all over the place in a population of 1/5th of San An.
In the shitty time I've been here, I've had tweaks dig up a flower plant out of my front yard, try and steal 5 gallon water bottles off my front miranda and I had one poor soul put an hobo curse on me. The auto theft rate here is the highest in the nation. More than Detroit, Chicago and South LA.
I've no faith in this generation of American drug addicts that are the products of a coddled society, where everyone who participates gets treated like they won. I don't think there has been a more entitled society since the Romans and it's going to end bad.
Do I want to be wrong? Hell yeah, I do. Do I think I will be? Not one bit unless that law is repealed.
The answer was stupid easy- relax the laws. Misdemeanors are fines, community service and drug classes/counseling for DUIs and pot possession, do that for minor amounts of these drugs. Not hard, makes them accountable and gives them the opportunity to get the help they need while having to be accountable for their actions and choices.

Is *that* moral?
Unwanted pregnancies more specifically. If they don't want to have to give birth or raise a child because of inconvenience, it shouldn't be up to an irresponsible person to decide to kill a child, that is immoral. But the mother and father who want to murder their responsibility are "miserable" because their child doesn't fit into their plans right now.
Killing is immoral in anyway. Defining what life is to justify murder is even sicker. The irresponsible parents can stop being "miserable" in 9 months by delivering the baby and giving it up for adoption AND they do the right, moral thing while being held accountable for their actions.

I think we can all agree that generally reducing human misery is a good thing.
The only thing that we quibble about here is how to go about that.
Can we at least agree that reducing human misery is a worthwhile goal?
Does that mean we should be dropping more bombs in the Middle East?

typical republican bubble living to say an issue isnt worth discussing if it doesnt impact you. thats why you continue to be in the stone ages.

"unwanted babies"
How exactly do you hold someone accountable for that?
Doesn't that punish a child for something their parent did?
(edit)
So your solution is forcing parents who "can't afford" to have kids to give up their kids for adoption? Essentially force women to be pregnant?
If they can't afford to take care of themselves, or don't know how to, you risk women going through pregnancy and doing things that harm the living baby anyway, such as drugs/alcohol, or even as simple as not eating right.
Your solution is having the government:
1) Force women to be pregnant.
2) Force those women to give birth (a dangerous medical procedure)
3) Force these women to give up children for adoption.
What happens to the children who will be born with severe developmental problems that no one wants to adopt?
What would you do with those kids?

You were merely trying for yet another strawman attack on me. Again, says more about you and your ideology than anything else, which I contend is morally and intellectually bankrupt. When you can't answer straightforward questions on morals, you make my case on that for me.
Sometimes I use your (and DarrinS ) posts as teaching points for my own boys. They were really put off by vy65 saying that he would prefer that the poor children should "starve". Some of their classmates are pretty poor, so they know what poverty is firsthand.
The answer to your questions:
Yes and yes.
NK would require a destructive war, which would cause far more misery than letting them suffer. A moral calculation there says we do nothing that would start a war.
The middle east (north Africa, and south east asia) requires investment and economic development. Oddly enough China seems to be taking the lead there in some ways. Go them. Personally, I would be all for a basic living allowance for all of them.

Childbirth is incredibly dangerous based on what I have read, especially historically. Our evolution has given us heads that are often too big for the pelvic girdle.
If you think this is an exaggeration, prove me wrong. Show me mortality data here. State-wide, national, and globally. How dangerous is it really?
or, just be lazy and continue to be ignorant.
Personal responsibility (see for yourself), or laziness (blanket assumption I am wrong). There is a third option, personal responsibility with intellectual dishonesty. You could find out the information, realize it wasn't much of an exaggeration, and decide not to put the information here, and admit you are wrong. (find out the information, and be dishonest enough not to admit fault)
The decision is yours.

Notice I made the distinction between you, and the ideology of conservatism. I assume that you are mostly a moral person. I think that if you really thought about the finer points, and practicality of conservatism, you might realize that it is intellectually and morally bankrupt.

Kid Rock leading the Michigan Senate run is just more proof of how far American Fascism is being rejected and is just another, big fat fucking L the Nazis on the Left are taking.
Michigan deserves a reprieve from the terrors, poverty and just all-out failures of Leftist policies and leadership, just as Chicago does and Poverty Hills, CA deserves better than a thieving bitch like Maxine Waters.
The audacity and denial of any responsibility for their failures will lead to the Left "laughing" at "stupid Repubs" and think that is the reason Kid Rock is surging in the polls and that's just a lie.
The giant failure of the Leftist administration has flat out tanked the state of Michigan and all but killed a once Top 4 city in Detroit, just as we are seeing in Chicago and what we've been seeing in the cesspool here in California.
People aren't stupid, and the alternative isn't too much better, but when you're living in shit because one party is one giant failure with their policies and leadership and habitual lying, people get turned off and look at the "can't be worse than what we already have" alternative.
Chicago, Detroit and LA being major crime infested, impoverished shitholes notorious for being Leftist strongholds isn't coincidence, it's a sign of what Leftism does and how unruly it is. The party is as much a mess as the cities and states it ruins.
But, to the Nazis running that sinking ship and their indoctrinated Brownshirts and Gustappo, it ISN'T the Left, it's the "Stupid Repubs".
The Left being so inept, awful and overall worse than the Right is why people are turning to garbage candidates. Period. The insults, the insecurity of partisanship and the lies can't change what is proven in Chicago, Detroit and LA.

the failures of the left in states like michigan give republicans great opportunities to put forth a real conservative leader who can actually make real change in washington. theyve used those opportunities instead to put a failing reality show douche in the presidency and a hick-hop rapper in a senate seat. the left may have nothing, but the right has less than that.

Because they're all cut from the same cloth. We don't want to believe that even after we've seen it for repeat generations and so we fool ourselves because the alternative is vulgar & ugly and frankly total loss.
That's why [all of them] are uncomfortable with Trump and just want him to go away so that they can once again conduct themselves as they have for repeat generations.
