That time Gregg Popovich gave Stephen Jackson the choice between smoking weed and a championship

https://www.yahoo.com/sports/time-gregg-popovich-gave-stephen-jackson-choice-weed-championship-151001226.html

Jackson: “I remember playing great, and after the last game, we’re just sitting there, and Pop was like, ‘I need to talk to you.’ He was like, ‘Jack, you had a great summer league, you’re playing well, I really want you on my team, but there’s only one way you’re going to make my team: During the season, you can’t smoke weed, Jack. You just can’t do it. I need you focused. I need you on your game, because you know we have a chance to win a championship, and I need you focused.’

“And once he told me that, I shut it down. I shut it down. The NBA was way more important than weed. Trust me.”

I bet he smoked weed as a Spur. Maybe he smoked less weed. I know plenty of Spurs have smoked weed in the past.

Blair had to have smoked weed. He needed munchies to aid him in consuming his 8 daily Whataburger double meat sandwiches

In a few years, a French article will come out with Parker saying Pop asked him to stop fucking his teammates' wives and focus on basketball, tbh.

You're being paid millions. If you can't give up the weed for those bucks, that is a sign you're an addict and maybe should be giving it up anyway.

I find it funny that Pop tells guys to quit smoking because he needs them focused, yet the guy drinks all the time.

Pop's done well to ease tensions with Jack since cutting him IMO. I can't see another coach cutting him & still talking to each other. He's still got a bit of a grudge against Danny, but it's not his fault he got minutes ahead of him in 2013. He was miles better than him on both ends.

This only proves pop ok with it. He said during the season to not smoke it. The offseason is the players time to indulge.

Weed can destroy your life. It's the ultimate gateway.

There's a 50% chance that if you smoke a joint on day 1, you will be on your knees in an alley giving head for some lady h by day 30.

Luckily I escaped that fate, but not my mom. Hope she kicks her habit soon.

I just wish it didn't mess with my sleep. Lawyer here, too.

Truthbomb, tbh. It's that slaver mentality talking. It's probably hard to keep the white liberal persona at all times tbh

My read on this is that Pop just wanted SJax to lay off the weed a little in hopes that he would make fewer mistakes on the court.
SJax had so much talent, but imagine how much better he would have been if he'd nailed down the mental component of the game?

Comparing wine to weed is stupid AF. You don't drink wine to get drunk, necessarily. You can do it just a glass or two with dinner because it tastes good. No one smokes weed because it tastes good. Shit, no one eats a pot brownie because it tastes good. You do it to get high.

I'm pro 420, but this is not a big deal at all. Weed can help certain things like creativity, but it can also affect peformance if you show up to work blitzed. For some smokers, it is second nature and can perform, while others not so much. Also, when the weed wears off, you can just feel out of it. Kudos to Pop.

Not to mention that if a player gets caught in a random drug test, he will get suspended and hurt the team in the middle of the season. That being said, I was around the ABA/NBA Spurs during the beginning of the cocaine years when it was 'cool' and no one thought there was a price to pay on court and off. There is no doubt that a lot of athletes lost something to their game and careers to drugs.

Was he old and at the end of his career when this was said? If so who cares...let it be.

Josh Gordon is still the gold standard athlete who threw away at least 2 multi-million dollar NFL contracts because of weed. Think Justin Blackmon did it too, but could be wrong on him.

Ricky Williams was sick of running 400 carries a years with no QB threat against 8-9 in the box with Miami. His body legitimately needed a year or 2 off, imo
