View Full Version : Another missed opportunity: Derrick Rose?

I haven't been on the D-Rose bandwagon this summer. But I would have been if I realized he could've been attained so cheaply. He signed for only 1 yr / $2.1 M. Seeing others' thoughts on this....

Spurs pay Patty Mills near $50mil, Cleveland gets Rose for $2mil. I would have let Mills walk and signed Rose for $2mil if I was running the Spurs, lol.

I think he was probably getting offers in the MLE range and probably 1yr deals...

He's coming off ANOTHER knee surgery..

He took about 6M-7M less to hopefully play in the Finals and restablish himself..

Really just shows how far he's fallen tbh

Yea, that's what I was thinking; get a ring and/or make the finals and sign for much more than any other multi-year contract would have paid this time around. No doubt, he took the cheapest amount to play with Cleveland. But this tells me that he was available to the Spurs pretty cheap, nonetheless.

I don't think the Mills contract is bad by current NBA standards. If we had let Patty leave, we may have suffered greatly from a lack of scoring/shooting in the interim, too.

implying Rose was even interested in playing here, they probably contacted and he probably declined.

Dude got desperate thinking he wouldn't get signed, time was running out. That's why he signed for so little.

Chillen

Good news is dude can't ever stay healthy, it's a risk for the Cavs and would have been a risk for the Spurs but yes for $2mil would have been less risky.

Rose just got paid $2 million to play 50 games and miss the playoffs entirely. If the Cavs get to the Finals, he'll be in street clothes on crutches.

Although D Rose is washed and a shell of his former self. He managed to stay relatively healthy compared to his standards. He had played and started on average 65 games the last 2 years.

I don't care too much about it but the Spurs turned him down:

http://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/20158919/nba-derrick-rose-lebron-james-need-other-now

Rose tried hard to get top Western Conference teams to sign him -- the San Antonio Spurs, the LA Clippers -- but those teams passed. Milwaukee Bucks head coach Jason Kidd had interest, but the Los Angeles Lakers and Cavaliers eventually made offers. Teams drafted point guards (Lakers, Dallas Mavericks, Philadelphia 76ers), and re-signed starters (Toronto Raptors and New Orleans Pelicans) and found veterans on the market (Sacramento Kings and Minnesota Timberwolves). When his old Bulls coach, Minnesota's Tom Thibodeau, chose Jeff Teague over Rose, it felt as if the market had bottomed out on him.

No one imagined this dramatic of a drop in the marketplace. Eventually, the Lakers wanted Rose to play behind Lonzo Ball, and be a mentor. Rose lives in L.A. in the summers, and loves Southern California, but he didn't want to imagine another losing season. Once James and coach Ty Lue became involved in the Cleveland conversations, Rose had a better idea about how it would work for him. In the end, the Cavaliers had interest regardless of the Irving circumstances, league sources said.

Maybe. But the move definitely seems to be an optimistic one (as this is more like an $8 mil move with the luxury tax the Cavs have to pay). Deron Williams is clearly done. That he even played significant minutes in The Finals show how desperate Cleveland was for PG play.

PATFO won't be trading for Irving for the same reason they didn't try to sign Rose...they aren't going to sign a starting PG when they still believe that job belongs to Parker.

That actually may be the main reason the Spurs didn't go for him. They rarely go for low-character players.

I agree 100%. And I don't really care about Rose but I'd hate for them to pass on someone like Cousins because of their standards. Not that he raped anyone.

I'm not saying Patty's 50M is justified, but I would take Patty over Rose all day. Rose is a constantly injured, low BBIQ player. I've always heard he's not the best locker room guy either. Patty is none of that.

Pay D-Rose to learn our system which seems to take 2 years minimum.
Or put Dejounte Murray in the fire with Patty Mills and have him mature more quickly.

Rose is a shell of his MVP self, but he has not realized it. He quit on the knicks, when they needed leadership. I mean the guy literally walked away after a morning shootaround and was MIA for hrs without telling the organization and coaching staff. He is not someone you want around young players, he is selfish, and makes no effort on defense. The price he got from the Cavs is his true value, veteran nba minimum wage and bench.h e put up good numbers this year but somebody had to score besides Carmelo. There was nobody else. He did not pass on higher pay for a chance at winning, higher pay passed on him. For good reason too. His idea of himself sits too high, he is not a starter anymore. He can't explode to the basket, no defense and he does not make teammates better around him. I was not a fan of the drafting of Derrick white but i will take him and Forbes over Rose any day.

John B

I rather see minutes go to Murray and Forbes and develop, than give to Rose who will not be available come playoffs.

Ppl are acting like rose would come here to start... He is a good 3rd string PG for 2 mil a year... Come off the bench behind Murray and Patty... Even run point in some lineups while Patty plays SG since Patty isn't PG

I think he means coming off the bench for the good of the team... Manu did it when it was clear he was starting material and potentially cost him a few bucks...
