I'd be happy with that.

I'd be ecstatic with that. Joff is borderline as a 4th big, he would have to seriously overachieve (relative to his career so far) to be a decent 3rd big.

Give em a break, yo. That 10th finger is absolutely essential for grabbing boards. He needs a wooden hand like chubbs (Carl weathers) in happy gilmore. He gets that and he is an instant double double machine.

Marc isn't a free agent for 2 years sooooo...have to hope a trade is in the works for that to happen.

That being said...would love to see what the Super Gasol Bros. could do in the NBA...preferably before they are both pushing 40;

Not Eurobasket but Garino is tearing shit up on the Americup. He's playing bullyball defense ala Kawhi and making all kinds of shots on offense. He seems a level above the rest of the field. If he can keep this up he might make it on the NBA afterall.

France 84 - 86 Finland

Lauvergne 18 minutes 4 pts, 4 rbs. He was really bad. 2point shots 1/6. Nando de Colo 21 pts and Fournier 25 pts were Frances best players. Boris Diaw 9 pts and 9 rbs. Boris is now HUGE.

On the other hand, Finlands 20 year old (still not physically very strong) 212 cm NBA rookie Markkanen 22 pt at the (stretch) center/pf -position.

Fuck, this Joffery guy has got mistake written all over him. The Spurs should be getting rid of Tony Parker via trade and not taking recommendations from him on players to sign.

I hope Kawhi doesn't bolt because of this shit.

And darn, I was holding out hope that Boris got in better shape and that the Spurs would sign him. Does he just not give a shit at all? What is wrong with this guy. I wish I had 1/10th of the talent that he has. What a waste, Bobo.

Our frontline is looking really bad this year.

Say what you want about Lee and Deadman - at the very least - they were rotation caliber players and added depth. Lauvergne is a fringe NBA player, LMA:lol is a cancer who can't even post up guards, Gasol is an ancient poor defensive player who burns out in the playoffs, and Kyle and Davis both have a lot of issues at this point in their careers - the former being slow and not very good at any one thing, while the latter can't grab a board to save his life.

The Spurs are going to give up a lot of offensive rebounds and points in the paint this upcoming season.

Thanks for that report. I am expecting a somewhat better Jeff Ayres in Luavergne, basically so long as he's not as TO prone, similar everywhere else which means he's a deep bench player.

I wonder why he chose Tel Aviv. The group stages are played in different cities across Europe and the group in Isreal is the only one that doesn't include a Spurs player (technically there's Sankidze but he is not even on Georgia's roster).

According to a report, San Antonio Spurs' Davis Bertans has suffered a finger injury during Latvia's opening game of EuroBasket 2017 versus Serbia and he did not let him play in Latvia's 92-64 win over Belgium.

Reports go on to say he did not suffer a break after x-rays were conducted and he's not feeling any pain.

"I'm waiting for what the doctor will say, it's hard to say because I have not had the ball in the hands since Friday, but I do not feel pain. We have a morning off, and we will see what we can do. There was a X-ray, nothing broken."The report goes on to say a Spurs representative will review his injury moving forward.
Bertans finished with 16 points in Latvia's loss to Serbia.
Team Latvia's next game will be Sept. 4 versus Great Britain.

What exactly went wrong with the Hanga contract? Was it just Manu coming back?
Spurs didn't want to pay him what he was worth in all likelihood ... There s a lot of discussion about it in one of the Manu back threads. He said Spurs reneged on a deal.

Not signing Hanga is looking straight ridiculous at this point. On top of this offensive explosion, dude is a reigning ELDPOY. Even signing Manu, you have to bring him over. Could have let two of White, Paul and Blossomgame go to other teams in favor of some decent bigs (ESPECIALLY considering that they knew at the time they were going to re-sign Mills).

It makes sense from a health point of view. Tiago isn't reliable. Can't stay healthy. At least Joff will give the other functional bigs some rest minutes. Injured Tiago can't even do that.

Romania and Czech Republic are much weaker compared to other teams. To be fair, it has to be mentioned that Hanga suffered a hip injury in the first game. It's hard to jugde him in these circumstances.

Not as much as I'd like. I watched him when he and Bertans were together (ironically enough, I watched for Bourousis). It's only been highlights since then. IDGAF about the tourney this year, but considering that the team did not offer the LLE, it's hard for his stats to be misleading enough to not warrant a contract.

Is it possible that he rejected the Spurs? Why come over from a smaller pond where you're a bigger name if you're going to be stuck on the bench behind two old men, a guy who prefers the club over being a better ball player, Fathead, 3 rookies, and 2 sophomores?

Hanga isn't worth it, tbh. The only reason he's putting some raw stats is because he's a go to guy for Hungary, but in teams with real talent he's nothing more than a role player. In the NBA he would be a 3 and D guy that can't shoot for shit. He's basically a less athletic version of Simmons.

On a good team, he was the DPOY. Simmons got a ton of hype for being a good defender but usually wasn't. Regardless, the LLE was for less than half of Simmons' APY.

If Simmons played in Europe he might have won DPoY too, tbh. And I'm sure he would shoot better than 32% from FIBA 3pt line.

No. He was very clear. This was an instagram post by him, not his agent, media or an intermediary. He wanted to come over and play in the NBA, but Spurs reneged on an offer, or backpedaled at any rate.

That's a good point. The amount is small for a potential rotation wing. But I have only seen Spurs pick up potentials in minimum deals to prove themselves and Hanga is worth more than that at least in Europe. I am guessing he wouldn't take BPaul minimum deal and Spurs wouldn't offer him what he is worth. Why wouldn't the Spurs do that?

This is my speculation: at one point they considered possibilities of Manu retiring, Simmons leaving (even b4 the QO was pulled Simmons camp had told Jabari Young they wanted to test the market and Young estimated likelihood of him being reupped at 50/50. Knowing what we now know it's probably more likely that Simmons was going to be gone than not and Spurs knew it) Spurs were not going to overpay or reup him at a higher price. Spurs also tried to trade Danny. So, in their summer projections they had minutes to replace at the wings and a small budget. But then Danny couldn't be traded, Manu didn't retire and Simmons was gone but they signed Rudy Gay. I think they just weren't feeling the pressure anymore and wouldn't pay more than minimum contracts after that. They might have even be aware that like DeColo, Hanga wasn't going to be happy riding the pine if they had no real minutes for him so they would only bring him if they needed minutes pretty badly.

Assuming the Spurs are going to be playing LMA at the five and Pau off the bench, it doesn't make sense to have Joffrey over Tiago.

Whether they generally start big or small, considering there are only 3 players capable of playing center (unless you count Costello), they couldn't afford to not prioritize durability and stamina. When Aldridge and Gasol get a rest game or are injured, they need a live body that can eat more than spot minutes.

Think Lauvergne over a more traditional center and Paul over Hanga indicate a philosophical shift, in that everyone must be at least somewhat of a triple threat offensively.

Germany pulls of the upset against France. Just got hot from 3 at the right time but almost managed to choke the game away down the stretch.

Lauvergne did some damage offensively but did not play that many minutes due to his defense. Boris had a decent scoring game but looked absolutely done on the defensive end giving up easy drives all game long. Nando pulled a Batum by completely disappearing down the stretch. Fournier single-handedly carried them in the last quarter with 16 points.

Theis seems to be a decent player, reminds me of JaMychal Green.

Its too much for Franc to overcome the combination of bad defense and DeColo having a bad game.

Its too bad Lauvergne was such a defensive liability that France couldn't spare him more minutes. I don't expect much from him this season so he might surprise me. I prefer that version than getting hyped up and then disappointed...

If Lauvergne gets minutes slashed in Europe because of his defensive deficiencies, how will he ever be a third "big" for the Spurs? This truly is shaping up to be a horrific off-season for the Spurs. I have been holding my tongue and waiting to see the team on the court before rushing to judgment. I am not as eager for the start of the season as I am apprehensive.

Been calling it all off-season: The Spurs inside defense is going to give up tons of buckets this year. It's going to be a layup line.

Come on bro, if you watched the game, Latvia played with 5 players and 3 refs. Porzingis could've fouled out in 1st half if the refs were correct. And so many doubtful decisions went in Latvia's favor especially in 2nd and 4th quarter. Gifted fouls, technicals, etc.

The essential Bertans performance, 23 points on 6/14 from 3 and only 1 rebound.

I hope NBA scouts watched the game. Everyone will be tanking for Doncic next year.

Has nothing to do with the Spurs (unfortunately), but I just happened to see it when spell-checking Ioannis' name.

Well, Spain is done and MVPau looked gassed by the middle of the third. :lol

Jesus...Can't wait until playoff time and he's huffing and puffing down the court airballing layups again. You can count on that. I mean, this is a guy who sat out a ton of games last year and still didn't have enough in the tank to make any sort of meaningful impact by the WCF.

Also lol @ Marc's inability to stay out of foul trouble in big games. Keep throwing those elbows, bro'. :lol

Great game by Slovenia, totally dominated throughout. Congrats to our Slovenian posters. Hope they win the final.

Does anybody know if Popovich is still at Eurobasket? Or did he return to the US already?

I'm very impressed and happy for our team. Can't remember the last time Spain got beaten by 20 points, by European team.

On the other hand, very unhappy that Pau has a 3 year contract with Spurs...

But, but, but he's a great trade chip now! Yeah, we were supposed to have flexibility for this summer and the next, but at least we have a corpse to trade in two years for a game changer!

I know this isn't relevant.. but it does have European players, and our once own Boris Diaw... his back to the future video with Evan Fournier. Apparently they made a video when they were younger! Check it out:

Eurobasket All Star Team:

Goran Dragic (MVP)
Alexey Shved
Bogdan Bogdanovic
Luka Doncic
Pau Gasol

Pau Gasol still the best big in Europe. He shows always a lot of heart and character in national team games...
