Which of you nerds have glasses? They were sold out everywhere I looked on Saturday. It should be interesting.

I just did the pinhole projection trick to see the crescent sun, but the good one is going to be on April 8th, 2024 when the NW side of San Antonio will be in totality.

We're only supposed to get 70% worth of it so it's pretty worthless.

The eclipse of 2024 will the first one within maybe 300 miles of San Antonio since at least the 1800s. Crazy that it will actually pass directly over the city. It'll hit Austin, Waco, Dallas, Ft Worth, Indianapolis, Cleveland, Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse, and Montreal too, and pass nearby St Louis, Chicago, and Detroit. If you drive out to Kerrville or Fredricksburg the totality is supposed to last 4 minutes and 20 seconds.

Someone at work had the glasses. It was pretty neat, even though it was just partial.

Can't wait for the one in 2024....ATX will be in the zone.

You're in NYC right? You'll get a roughly 90-95% eclipse there in 2024, and if you drive to Buffalo or Rochester you'll be in the center of the 100% zone.

That's not what I read. The peak is 70% or there about.

At 2:44pm, the eclipse will hit its peak in New York. At this point, Gothamites will be able to see about 70 percent of the total eclipse. Sure, New York won't get the full, total darkness (https://www.timeout.com/newyork/blog/the-empire-state-building-will-light-up-during-the-solar-eclipse-on-monday-afternoon-081817) that other areas across the country will see, but the sight promises to be pretty incredible regardless. The peak of the eclipse will only last for a few minutes, so it might be a good idea to put your phone down during this stretch.

I'm in the city.

Sorry, I meant in the 2024 eclipse. We had 65% in San Antonio today, which is mildly interesting seeing a crescent sun and seeing the color of the sky look a little washed out vs normal. But 2024 is going to be the really badass one.

I went downstair to see if I can catch something. Didn't get jack. It got all cloudy and it pretty much blocked out what there was to see.

We were about at 80% here in Maryland and you couldn't see any difference. One of the guys at the city yard had a welding helmet so I grabbed it and looked through it. It was wild it was pretty much covering the whole sun except for a hair, yet it was still fully light outside.

Was only a tad eclipsed here in the Southern California area, but it was pretty cool nonetheless to see it make it a tad darker for a little bit. For those in TX who get the totality in 2024, that is super cool.

Did a survey of the folks at the tiny little county road we thought was all ours in Nebraska.
Nerd factor off the charts. In almost every group there was a person who worked in science in some capacity. Germans to our left, Canadians and folks from Denmark to our right. Lots of amateur astronomers with incredible setups.

This is brings up an interesting point.

I dont know how anything with eyes like ours CAN stare at the sun. Who can do this? I suspect people with polarized glasses might be able to and then they burn and radical O2 damage their eyes. So animals with polarized glasses have probably been wandering around bumping into trees for the past couple of days.

Oh.
There are no moths left on Earth.

Shit, you sort of believe it's real when you see it now. Nothing makes you feel less significant than seeing the sun stop working for a few minutes in the middle of the day.

Yeah, seeing this in the days before Astronomy existed surely would have had enormous religious meaning about how God blocked the sun in the middle of the day to forgive our sins or some shit. It would be plastered all over the Bible had the right people seen it.

Yeah. And a lot of my friends here in Austin are like, "I know what you mean." They don't. When you see the eclipse on TV, part of you thinks it's just a movie or in the very least, something to observe with a level of detachment. But when you're sitting there, and the sky turns dark and the air drops 20 degrees in like a minute and the big ball in the sky that you've depended on being there for your whole life just goes away (it pretty much goes from looking normal to the naked eye to corona in seconds for those who don't know), you don't really know how fragile it all is.

Small, yes. And weak. Like there's nothing we could possibly do as a species that can match the moon just sliding by the sun for three minutes. As much as we try to think we know about the universe, we're almost all going to die having never left the planet. But those things out there are able to unthinkingly destroy everything we are just by floating in a certain direction.

I didn't cry, but I can understand why people did.

The sun "looked" like a flippn black hole.
I was not ready for that.
I had farm fields all around me and on the horizon it was purple all the way around. I could see Venus and some other planets clearly. Then when the moon passed by and let a little light back through that light just shot out and made super crisp shadows. Donkeys and cattle started sounding off as well.

Adults turned to kids again with "why the heck does it look" questions, "what causes this" questions.

Good stuff.

I signed and dated my special glasses. Should be worth a dollar during my estate sale I imagine.

Animals, like humans, could theoretically*be blinded by looking directly at the sun*duringthe solar eclipse. However, Fluffy and Pickles probably also have the common sense or instinct to not stare directly at the sun..
