I'm not getting a shot just in case I am a carrier of the flu.
Yep.
Thats not a surprise.
If they worked why do people still get sick here
There are many strains of the flu virus. The shot doesn't cover them all.
The shot is supposed to lessen your symptoms, especially for people who go overboard with symptoms. I know people all around me who get a shot every year, and every year they have the flu. If I was prone to get it, I would investigate the shot but right now it's like Bob Ross putting that big fucking tree right in the middle of a perfectly good mountain scene - don't fix what ain't broken.

It's not the flu itself as much as the damage it does to your kidneys and other organs. Long term it can be very dangerous, and pneumonia can develop and suddenly you're pumping antibiotics into your system left and right, trying to get ahead of it. None of that is good, best to just avoid it.
Yep.
Thats not a surprise.
What I mean is that risk isn't enough to move me to risk the repercussions of getting the shot.
Do you wear a face mask on planes? Do you wear latex gloves as well? If not, you're not doing enough to protect other people from things you could be carrying.

Many die from the flu.
If the flu had the same symptoms as Ebola or small box people would rush to get the vaccine. But the flu just makes you feel achy, fever, weakness, lungs start to go bad. Pneumonia and such take over. Dead. It's not an "scary" disease. But it kills.
So ducks it's all good. Let people like me protect you. I like ducks.

Yes if I'm sick with a cold I do. But I know I have it.
What other things would I be carrying that is very very common, kill lots of people, and show no symptoms in some because it infects so many?
Answer, cold viruses.
Pretty damn pitiful argument frankly.
Herd immunity is most important in widespread diseases. The flu is the most widespread viral disease along with colds but it kills people.

And those numbers are bad and highly variable year to year. Some strains have a much larger % of deaths.

Why does it matter if they are from "all over everywhere"? 130 people are 130 people. Any of them can have the flu. Since I take over 30 flights a year and have for 15 or more years, I'd say it's not really an issue, not for me.

I have no idea what antigens have been selected this year but I can find out if you would like.
Im trusting people who know a lot more about which antigens to use as I am not in this particular field, it's not my life's work.
So what strain of flu shot did you get?
There's a yearly strain that's used to create the shot. Sometimes they miss the actual strain.

Are you fckn kidding? What difference does it make if people are highly mobile in the spread of transmissible disease?
Its interesting there are only 130 people in the airports you land in. I've been in some very small ones, but had to be in big ones to get to the small ones.
And yeah, it's apparent it's not an issue for you.
Its my choice. I've never had the flu.

No since it's not an inoculation, but I am all for inoculations. I don't think anyone should be allowed to opt out of those if you want to live in the US with the rest of us.

The airplane only recycles about half its air. Even that is filtered. The germs are on tray tables and that overhead vent knob that never gets cleaned. You have to close your tray tables, not clean them. You adjust the air, you don't clean the vent (neither do they). I clean my tray table and my vent with wipes. I don't touch door handles if I can avoid it. When I eat a urinal mint, it has to be relatively fresh. People get sick from the fact they are travelling, they are tired and they are exposed to climate conditions they aren't accustomed to.
How are people sitting on a plane more mobile than people sitting at a concert or a sporting event? I get it they are moving through the air much faster, but they are personally not more mobile and a moving plane doesn't necessarily collect disease.
130 on the plane, dipshit, unless you think the airport recycles all it's air and is a "tube".
There are more than 130 at HEB. Oh noes! I better get my surgical mask!

You should. I don't think you should be forced to. People who don't get inoculated put the rest of us in danger. I think you should be allowed to live how you want, on your own island, not doing any business with the rest of the world. In society however, there are some trade-offs, and one of them is that you get inoculated.

A large group of people can be from anywhere at all. Whether you meet them in a store or in an airport, you're around people you know nothing about. If your immune system is compromised, you'll get sick just picking your kid up from daycare.
You get your flu shot and save the world. There's a reason everyone can get a flu shot.

You labeled it a high horse, got perturbed, and then proceeded to make an utter fool of yourself.

But
But what if
Facts are this. If you carry the virus, and you come in contact with lots of people from lots of places, it's more likely to spread widely. So you are just flat out wrong. Meet them in a store or an airport... It does make a difference, you are wrong. That's it, that's all. You still don't understand.

Yes you can.
A carrier has the virus and has very mild symptoms or none at all.
The point is that people with the virus don't even know they have it and go to school, come to the US, and on... and spread it. It is suggested by epidemiologsts to get the vaccine even if you have never had the flu symptoms, to be more exact for you.

True.
You can test for the antibodies however, that's how we know there are people who have been infected, but show little to no symptoms. However, I have never been tested for the antibodies. So fundamentally you are correct. But I also know that you, at least, understand what I am stating.

A building is a building, people are people. People are usually traveling in airports. Not in HEB. It's about spreading the disease widely. You have no Fkn clue. I don't talk about things I know absolutely nothing about, it appears to be your habit. So Ebola breaks out in a town in Africa, people start coming down with symptoms and you want them on an airplane and in airports. But, but they are dying in the town also? No shit, but you want them in an airport and on an airplane.
Excellent stuff.

Myth: Airplane Air Makes You Sick
By ABC NEWS Oct. 14, 2005
Email
Your plane starts to taxi away from the gate and the open air vents above your seat start blowing out cool air. As you sit back and head up into the sky, do you wonder -- is that recycled air blowing germs down on me? If so, you're not alone.
"I definitely think that airplane air can make me feel sick. I often get a cold after I fly," one woman traveler told "20/20."
"When I get off of the flights I'm normally congested and I have to use my inhalers. And I don't believe airplane air is conditioned the way it should be," a man told us.
But experts say: Don't blame the air up there.
"The air is in fact quite healthy, because of the excellent cabin air filters," said Joe Lundquist, an air filtration expert with Pall Corp. He says state-of-the-art HEPA air filters can capture up to 99.9% of small bacteria and viruses -- even SARS and bird flu virus.
"We've gone through great studies to prove that they effectively remove the bacteria and viruses that people are so concerned about," he said.
Today, HEPA filters are found on most commercial airplanes -- where they re-circulate the air every three to five minutes. A 2002 medical study found that passengers flying in planes with re-circulated air had no more colds than people on planes ventilated with fresh air. So, how did you catch that cold on the plane?
Being on a plane packed with people coughing or sneezing near you is the reason you catch colds. In fact, that air blowing on you from the nozzles above may even help keep you safe from some of those germs being coughed up all around you.

You either get it or you don't. If you're worrying about infecting the world, don't fly while you have the flu.
If you don't know when you have the flu, get tested, cheapskate.
So you as a Center for Disease guy are stating that 8000 people with Ebola from the same city staying put is the same as 8000 people in 8000 different places all traveling.
You're talking about spreading. I am talking about contracting. My odds of being exposed to ebola in a city with 8K people infected and not quarantined is likely higher than if those 8K people spread out across the world, but their odds of spreading it might be higher.

B. You say you're concerned about spreading it
C. Not so concerned that you'll get tested
Can you spread the flu as an asymptomatic carrier? Sure, just like a symptomatic carrier other than the hacking and wheezing. Can you contract it from people you know just as easy as from people you don't? Sure, pretty sure most people pick it up from people they know.

Yeah that's what I labeled you as.
A pariah. For not getting a vaccine. And you feel just horrible, and not from the flu.
This test, no. It's for people who have the symptoms. And it's a poor antigen test. The real purpose is to get you to bed before you really conk out. It tells you nothing about the types of strains for A and B. And nothing about C as expected. Some research labs pay for people like you and I to come in during really bad outbreaks, especially if everyone around us family, school, etc... Has it.

No im speaking to both. If you contract and get on a plane, instead of staying put, it's not a good thing. Because planes are easier places to contract it, or give it to others, and then you go to an airport, change planes and the process continues. You know exactly what I am talking about now. What's correct then? Honest question
The flu shot is designed to provide full immunity to the 3 or 4 (depending on type of vaccine) influenza strains that are in the vaccine. There are literally thousands of strains present each year globally so the vaccine manufacturers make their best guess as to which strains will be most prevalent each season. Some years they guess well and some years they don't.
The vaccine can lessen symptoms and duration of illness from other strains if they are similar enough to the strains in the vaccine. I think that's what Pelicans was thinking of.
Universal flu vaccines are currently being tested which target proteins common to all or most influenza strains. A universal vaccine would provide long term protection the way most other vaccines do. Still years away though.

I got the flu when I was 19. Knocked the shit out of me for a week and a half bad enough that I still remember it 31 years later. Don't ever want to go through that again so I get a flu shot every year. It's cheap and safe so why not.
No its not a scam. YOU stated that, I did not. It's for you to get the hell in bed and to tell the doc if you must go in what OVERALL broad strain you had.
Again you try and change my argument. This is like an addiction for you.
So do you think it's due diligence for everyone to wear a mask? You never know who's carrying it and who isn't, so shouldn't everyone wear a mask?
If not, and you just do it for the sake of your conscience, I don't have an issue with it. Just don't get all felt up because others don't. I don't need to inject shit into me to fix a problem I don't have.
No im speaking to both. If you contract and get on a plane, instead of staying put, it's not a good thing. Because planes are easier places to contract it, or give it to others, and then you go to an airport, change planes and the process continues. You know exactly what I am talking about now. Maybe not when you were speaking to washing down your entire field on an airplane and eating mints, but you do now.
You just said you've never had symptoms but you could be a carrier. How do you know you contracted it if you are asymptomatic? So should someone never travel during "flu season"? Some people travel for work, so you don't really have a choice.
I always clean my tray table and the air vent. I clean areas around me (comes from my cooking days and cleanroom days). I carry antiseptic wipes in my bag, use them all the time. The pretzel bag makes a nice disposal bag for them. The urinal mints I obviously rinse with that fresh water they pour down that white porcelain "sink", I do it a few times (I'm not a pig you know).

I don't know.
So....
I get vaccinated now. This is the point. For the last 6 years in fact. So it's much more likely that I don't have the virus to spread far and wide. I know people who are epidemiologsts and they explained this to me when I said I did not get the flu vaccine because I don't get the flu. Now I'm telling you. But I White Knighted, so it's obviously an exercise in futility on my part to try and explain. The Walgreens test is for people who have flu like symptoms so they can know if they are about to get knocked for a loop (Versus just having a cold) and maybe keep non infected relatives aware and away. Especially younger and older people even though some strains have actually put down a bunch of healthy 20-30 year olds. ( Another interesting story as to why)
I understand this crap because of my background and job but don't work in the field. It makes sense to me. But I have had many lessons on this board that just because it seems straightforward to me...

I caught the flu back to back within 20 days my Sophmore year. Haven't caught it since and haven't had a flu shot since middle school

Cytokine storm
Always cracks me up when people think because they have a healthy immune system that they are invulnerable to viruses. They don't know that with some viruses the stronger your immune system the sicker you will get. The 1918 pandemic was like that. Ebola is another one where the healthier you are the faster you die.

For basically being immune to it after catching it twice in 1 month? No need for it, I can do better things with $10 than get slightly sick when I haven't gotten sick without it for 18 years.

Interesting stuff. And interesting how much work they did to tie it in to bodies that far back.
