They didn't lose money.

The owners are just trying to smarten up.

I hope they didn't. Would be sad to see them losing money in the prime of their winning days

Wins 61 games and makes the WCF and still loses money despite having 8 extra home playoff games.

Has to be concerning for the Spurs and other small market teams too.

Saw a post from one of the NBA writes I follow (its been a couple of days, i'll try and find it), he posted a graphic that shows almost all of the big market teams making money (except from Brooklyn) Spurs lost money and more than a few small market teams too.

I love how the US is the capital of capitalism (no pun intended) but when they want to fix something to avoid its suckness they resort to Socialist ideas.

Western Capitalism is predatory, tbh.

Give poor peopel hope but its really a platform for the elite to widen the gap.

Ofcourse its the Government and the Free masons that truly benefit the most out if though. Even the Elites have to pay ridiculous taxes.

Even Clevenald lost money according to this reaserach.

The Spurs has had the platform to catapult themselves into a "fans" loved organization though. They're just piss poor at PR.

Contrary to popular belief the Spurs are popular outside of San Antonio, there's tons of spursfans in Toronto and other major american cities..It's acutally one of the very few teams in the league the draws out fans in opposing staduims.

They really just need to throw this "Classy" Garbage schtick and aggressively promote their players instead. They have a Golden Opportunity with kawhi..The fans love him, the media likes him.

All them Big market teams..Also aggressively promote their Players...SOmething San Antonio never does.

Too much money being wasted paying washed up scrubby old men.

No one is interested in watching a "team"

It's a superstar league. It's true they do a poor job marketing him.

Even if you're someone who lives in SA, if you were just starting to watch the NBA, you wouldn't know he was the star of the team until you heard someone say so. All you would see until you watch the games is him being treated like an idiot in those HEB commercials. :lol

It's surprising when tanking teams like Philly weren't in that list. Profit sharing? Something.

You can thank the players' union and CBA for that shit.

Good thing about Adam Silver is he doesn't punish players for "personal conduct violations" when the player did nothing against the law. He will ban a player for 2 years for repeat hard drug offenses (Chris Anderson, OJ Mayo, probably a few others) but that's about it.

Agree with Spurs not aggressively promoting their players. Heck when I went to Suns games when they had their big 3 and Shaq, they had cool life size cardboard cutouts of Shaq you could take pictures with, Amare had a restaurant, etc. And now that I live in the Bay Area the Warriors are always out in the community doing stuff. There was an event featuring Javale McGee just a couple weeks ago. All the Spurs seem to do is HEB commercials. The promos at the games are more about the Silver Dancers and Coyote than the Spurs themselves it seems. I also never saw one Big 3 cutout or country flags or whatever in all the years they were around.

Haven't been to a live Spurs game since 2012 (the year before they renovated and changed the court), can't say I've really missed anything.

Philly and the East Coast teams probably make a crap ton of money from corporate boxes. No shortage of big money to buy expensive, status seats to host meetings and do deals

I don't believe this shot for a minute. Classic Hollywood accounting, where no movie has turned a profit ever.

Tbh, everyone involved with the Spurs probably have to tow a squeaky clean line. One controversial Twitter post and they would likely be sacked. Wouldn't doubt it if they're being watched every time they post something by guys with batons.

This drunk fuck also deserves the blame. How the fuck are you over the cap every offseason when your roster has 1 fucking all star? You can't sign another star without trading at least 3 players :lol literally handing out $98,000,000 to Patty Mills and Pau Gasol....

All these problems while Kawhi is earning peanuts compared to the Max contracts nowadays. This team is so fucked.

But, but, but...loyalty and continuity! As in, continuing to lose money and get bounced out of the playoffs early overpaying one-dimensional losers and old men. :lol

This team still relies on a 40 year old and one of the worst starting PGs in the league to win playoff games, ffs. If he didn't miss out on his boy Valancunias and luck out trading for Kawhi instead, this team would have sunk long ago.

:lmao at the bolded part

Buford's drafting has to be down there with Chicago and Orlando. Jean-Charles, Milutinov, Fathead, Murray, Fathead dos, Bottomgame... it's not surprising Pop still has to trot out Parker or Ginobili out there :lol

In San Antonio’s case, it’s not actually that they didn’t make enough money; the likely reason they were under water is that they had to share so much — and have paid out in revenue sharing for six straight seasons.

Thanks shitty teams

Yeah, can't fault Pop for going with the old men when he has losers like D-League "I'm better at drinking and chasing underage girls at the club than playing basketball" Green, Fathead, LMA:lol, and that choker Fatty Mills.

:lmao @ "Bottomgame"...Who else? Adam Hanger, Nando De Culo, Cory Joseph over Jimmy Butler, Malik Hairston (for Dragic to our rival Phoenix), Scola for cash to pay Matt "I'll spread the court and my ass" Boner, James Gist!, Marcus Williams, Deshit Thomas, Cady LaLol, Marcus Denmon, Jack McClinton, Ryan fucking Richards. :lol

Still, is that it has to be demoralizing when the Spurs are considered the gold standards and they lose money despite a deep playoff run.

BTW; to your point, I live in Virginia and have no ties to Texas nor have ever been and i've been a fan since 2003.

I don't think they actually lost money though. CBA is just around the corner.

I'm sure they had to do some accounting magic.

The point remains though, they don't do enough to market the things that do sell "Superstars"

NBA needs a hard cap....Need to spread out the "stars"..Can't have them all on one team...If San Antonio ever loses the Spurs, I'll be done with the NBA...

This doesn't take into consideration of the Spurs Stadium concessions etc.
That said the Spurs probably at best broke even to a small profit.
Look at the local media deal the Lakers have_ also as mentioned the Luxury box sales in bigger markets- ticket prices etc. It's really hard to compete.
Add in the Spurs Ownership is way down on the net worth for NBA owners....

Since 1980 only two teams outside the top 11 metro areas have won a title- (Spurs and Cavs)

It doesn't help that if Kawhi leaves San Antonio, they're basically Atlanta Hawks west.
