Report | Bruce Bowen to join Clippers broadcast teamhttps://d3d2maoophos6y.cloudfront.net/wp-content/uploads/2017/02/04153454/Raphielle-Johnson-80x80.jpg

After retiring from the NBA following the 2008-09 season, Bruce Bowen has worked in basketball media, most recently serving as an analyst for ESPN. According to a report by Brad Turner of the Los Angeles Times, Bowen is in line for a change of scenery as he will serve as the color commentator for Los Angeles Clippers games (https://twitter.com/BA_Turner/status/910999052694691841) during the 2017-18 season.
Bowen replaces Michael Smith, who has served in that role for FOX Sports Prime the last 19 seasons. Play-by-play announcer Ralph Lawler has been the voice of the franchise for the last 37 years.

While Bowen never played for the Clippers during his 13-year NBA career, he’s certainly familiar with southern California, as he played his college basketball at Cal-State Fullerton.
Not selected in the 1993 NBA Draft, Bowen plied his trade in both Europe and the CBA before making his NBA debut as a member of the Miami Heat during the 1996-97 season. Bowen would go on to earn a consistent place in the NBA, spending time with the Boston Celtics, Philadelphia 76ers and Heat (his second stint with the team) before joining the Spurs in 2001.

One of the top on-ball defenders in the NBA during that era, Bruce Bowen was a member of three NBA championship teams during his time in San Antonio. Bowen was an eight-time All-Defensive Team selection, and in 2012 the Spurs retired his No. 12 jersey (http://www.nba.com/spurs/news/120123_spurs_retire_bowen_jersey). The number is currently worn by Spurs power forward LaMarcus Aldridge, who received Bowen’s blessing (http://blog.mysanantonio.com/spursnation/2015/07/09/with-bowens-blessing-spurs-to-give-no-12-to-aldridge/) upon signing with the team as a free agent in the summer of 2015.

I'm usually with you, KK, but this time you went too far. Sean is one of my favorite players and the Spur that I modeled my game after in high school.

He's not Mike Smith, so he's automatically a huge upgrade. What they really need to do is get Bill Walton back in the booth with Ralph for at least a few home games.

As a player especially in college he was a beast.
he used to take a wet shit on my Bruins of that era and was a good, not great pro.
but i think he is a blatant homer and vastly overrated in the 210 area code.
he is far from the worst though ...and i freaking hated Bowen as a player but he has been solid as studio TV guide.
helping carry a broadcast is different though ...we will see.

That stuff is overblown, tbh...When Sean is going into full-blown homer mode, he's usually speaking sarcastically and making it quite obvious that he's being biased. That's more you can say about a lot of other guys calling games. There are maybe a 2 or 3 commentators in the entire league that are not homers.

Michael Smith was the butter to Ralph Lawler's biscuits, tbh.

Yeah that homer stuff is exaggerated. Sure sometimes he's a homer, because it's a spur broadcast, but most times it's tongue-in-cheek when he does it. He is always giving major credit to other players during games.

The Houston dudes are legit homers.

He was a homer with shit takes. There's a reason why "settle down, Mike Smith" became one of Ralph's catchphrases over the years: it's because Mike Smith kept saying stupid shit all the time.

Never said he does not give credit ...
But i ready admit my broadcast standards are high cuz i grew up on Vin, Lawler, Miller and Chick. Their analysts even Stu are overrated ...but Sean is mediocre to me ...shitty was probably to strong and i dont buy ...its all tongue n cheek. he is your guy so i get the support but Spur fan has some obectivity conflicts on the matter.

We agree Rox announcers sux bad ...

The Warriors' team is awful and have been for a while. Sean shouldn't have to apologize for slanting toward the Spurs when it comes to his coverage or how hard he'll complain about a foul or whatever. What he doesn't tend to do is look at a replay and lie about what just happened. Warriors guy saw the replay of Klay pushing a guy off last year and still said, "He didn't touch him". That's when being a homer gets in the way.

I think the perception often comes from fans of other teams who are made that Sean doesn't talk about their team enough during broadcasts. But honestly, the Spurs have won more games than anybody during Elliott's tenure there. It's just likely that the Spurs are winning any given game and are thusly more interesting to talk about. Then you add it that most of the legitimate teams the Spurs face are on national broadcasts and thus Sean is not able to talk about them.

This all the way. Sean will homer it up about a call, and then after the replay say "i'm gonna pretend i didn't see that". He admits to wearing silver and black glasses and jokes about it. He's pretty funny.

Other homer commentators just bitch about their team not getting calls and are never objective. I've never understood the hate for Sean Elliott as a broadcaster.

and i respect that too ...
Chick was a Laker fan but he got on em ...i dont mind if an announcer roots for the team he covers for years ... but he should also have the journalistic integrity to call it like they see it if they underperform and that is something the best like Hearn do. Most make excuses blame refs etc. instead

First of all, of course he is a blatant homer, he was a Spurs player, all but one year, and got his only ring with us. Also, he is employed by the Spurs as a broadcaster. Now, if he were working National games, I would give more weight to your argument. Still, as homer announcers go, Elliott does a better job than most at criticizing the home team and praising the opponent, something Boston, PHX, Dallas, and Houston homer announcers almost never do.
