I know this was posted over the weekend, but they made it official today ...

SPURS WAIVE FORWARD JAWAD WILLIAMS

SAN ANTONIO - The San Antonio Spurs today announced that they have waived Jawad Williams.

Williams, a 6-9 forward from North Carolina, appeared in three preseason games for the Spurs, averaging 4.7 points and 1.7 rebounds in 16.3 minutes per contest.

The Spurs roster now stands at 16.

So Williams and Bailey are gone now, correct?

That leaves Ford and Sanders as far as guys most posters here like?

Well Graham is left too. But though he works hard, he doesn't seem to be NBA ready.

The Express-News indicated that the Spurs would pick between Ford and Sanders for MAYBE one roster spot. So they are not even sure to carry 14 players I guess.

I could see the Spurs sticking with 14 from what they have, and keeping that 15th spot available for emergencies or in case a Mike Wilks-like castoff becomes available; someone who can step in play as a passable replacement in certain spots. With the movement to a nightly inactive list, there is a greater need to have more guys who are NBA-ready and can play.

Thrown back into the lake to grow a little more.

Work on that game Jawad, specifically, dribbling, shooting, and understanding passing lanes. Somewhere in there, you've got to improve anticipation and basketball instincts also. Am I asking for too much? Good luck.

You can do it!!!

I thought the teams were going to be required to carry more players since the ridiculous bogus IR assignments were stopped. Aren't they supposed to carry 15 active players according to the new contract?

They have to carry a minimum of 13. The league has to "average" 14. (I'm not sure how they control that if the minimum is 13). And the maximum is 15.

I think the issue has to do more with money. The Spurs are already over the luxury tax. With each minimum contract now counting double for the Spurs, I'm guessing it will be close to impossible to get Holt to sign off on carrying a 15th man. It appears that the Spurs aren't even sure he'll want them to carry a 14th man.

:rolleyes

sign them to non guarantee contracts and cut them right at the tax deadline
if they can trade barry, rasho or even beno for picks they would be under the tax bracket

My bad, bad math.

Of course, once they deal off Radoslav or Nazr . . . .

Speaking of Mike Wilks...is he getting any looks from other teams? The guy wasn't bad. He deserves a chance.

Cleveland Cavaliers. Third PG behind Damon Jones and Eric Snow.

Wish he was still with our team. He was a pretty good player.

Do you mean Wilks or Jawad Williams?

Neither of those guys would make this team.

I meant Wilks. Everytime he played on the floor, he played pretty good for a bench player.

I think we should keep it at 14. That way we'll have room for one when we trade Rasho for Lebron and Iggy.

I don't think his contract is guaranteed yet. He's fighting for a spot there.

I doubt the Spurs have any need for another point guard.

People forget. When the Spurs won the title in 2003, they only carried 13 on that team. They signed a couple of ten day contracts- including Devin- when Speedy got hurt.

They should've waived a foreigner.

I remember that.

But the Spurs bench is relatively old this season and it would be nice to carry one young guy on the inactive list to groom for the future.

Only if Isiah bolts from the Knicks to take over Cleveland.

So then could we keep sanders on the roster and send graham & ford to the NBDL?

The players you send to the NBDL count against the 15. You have to sign them (and pay them their NBA money) and send them down to the NBDL.

...and they can be sent to the NBDL up to 3 times (only) in a season and they have to be 0 or 1-year of experience players (only).
