Cars on base used to stop driving and pull to the side until the anthem was over. People who were walking would stop and do the same. I also remember lifeguards blowing their whistles at 5:30 pm and being asked to get out of the swimming pool at the military officer's club. Patrons would face the direction of the Post flag (which was not visible) and stand with hand over heart as the anthem was played. Cars on base used to stop driving and pull to the side until the anthem was over. People who were walking would stop and do the same. I think a cannon would go off before and after so people would know when to stop or carry on.
