im thinking he should start over Pau (matter of fact, Gasol should retire)...size, rebounding, passing...and can move his feet defensively...MUCH better option than lead footed gasol

I haven't liked Gasol starting and I would have thought Pop learned from last season that wasn't going to work out. But Pop knows best. He must have his reasons.

Joff is historically a worse defender than Pau. I wouldn't be keen on starting him with that justification. However, he seems more willing to score inside, which is something at which Pau just isn't good, at least in NBA play. I like the idea of Pau on the bench, but it might make more sense to have a BG second unit rather than two units that are bogged down offensively.

and can move his feet defensively...

I don't think that's accurate at all. He is not as slow as Pau but not really quicker than your average center. Even at the Euro level you could see that his P&R D is not great. His rim protection is also non-existent.
But looking at the other options, there's really no obvious choice to make. I would love to see Gay start at some point in the season but I'm not going to get my hopes up.

Gasol, when he wants to be, can be a factor at the rim. His rim protection again Houston starting in game 3 of the Semi's was very good. I haven't been able to watch the preseason so I have yet to see Joff play but I would actually rather see Anderson get the Blair start (starts but plays only 20 minutes)with Gay playing with and against the second unit (s) and closing each half along with Green, Leonard, and LMA.

Anderson has shot 40% from the corner 3 for his career, good defensive rebounder and is an above average defender and passer. I fully expect Gasol to start though, I don't love his paring with Aldridge but I get it.

Don't look at the percentage... Look at the shots he turns down that destroy our offense... His percentage doesn't make up for that

I'm not sure what Gasol's role is going to be beyond providing articulate post game interviews. If there was an all-star slot awarded for thoughtful, insightful responses to reporters sleep-inducing boring line of questioning, then Pau would definitely be on it. Kudos to him for his interviewing efforts. I'm looking forward to another full season of hearing him respond to the same 5 or 6 reporter questions every game on behalf of the team.

I'm starting to think Pau only makes sense as a starter. The bench doesn't need a guy who doesn't roll and is reluctant to score in general. Pau does add great B2B passing (WAY better than Joff despite his pre-season showing). He also takes strain off LMA when it comes to facing other bigs. At the beginning of the year when Aldridge has to be the first option, taking some of the banging down low away is a good thing.

Gasol's place is really just off the team. If being in the WCF isn't enough to motivate him, nothing is. The bigs should have been LMA, Bertans, Lauvergne, Lee, Milutinov/Bell and then possibly another big coming over as a buyout. There's just no room for Pau's skill-set if he can't bring better effort.

As TD 21 and I said b4 the season started, he got paid and minutes will be found for him. He was likely going to be starting bc Pop was going to find ways to maximize his strengths while keeping Lamarcus as a PF. Pau's strengths currently are his passing and shooting which opens things up for LMA and Kawhi; also for one of Murray or Tony when they are back. However Pop is pretending that pairing worked out last season bc they didn't. I suppose they hope LMA more aggressive with better spacing (which Dedmon didn't provide) and MVP Kawhi will make it right. They may in fact do that.

My concern with Pau is really that his play hasn't looked like he's deserving of such a large and important role.... but I hope I am wrong. We shall see.

Then there's the matter of his contract which makes me uneasy.

Joff should start and it's honestly not even close. Kawhi would hugely benefit from having a great roller

Great roller... lol. The problem is pau doesnt set picks. Its what made lee the best big spurs had last year. It matters zero, what any of these clowns do right now, other than make contact, then you can pretend you know what you are talking about.
