Tapper: NBC's Reason for Killing Weinstein Story, 'Seems Like a Real Lie to Me'

CNN’s Jake Tapper on Wednesday took a hard stance against NBC for not publishing Ronan Farrow’s bombshell report on decades of sexual misconduct by film producer Harvey Weinstein, saying their excuse for not moving forward, “seems like a real lie to me.”
Farrow’s months-long investigation into reports of Weinstein’s behavior was spiked by NBC News but later published by the New Yorker. NBC said the story wasn’t publishable, per MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow, and an NBC source told Politico Tuesday what Farrow had early on “was nowhere close” to what appeared in the magazine.

"An NBC source told ‘The Daily Beast,’ quote, 'He brought NBC News early reporting on Weinstein that didn’t meet the standard to go forward with the story. It was nowhere close to what ultimately ran. At that time, he didn’t have one accuser willing to go on the record or identify themselves. The story he published is radically different than what he brought to NBC News,' " Tapper read on the air to Farrow.





“That seems like a real lie to me,” he continued.

“My understanding is that while the story was at NBC, you had three named women, the full NYPD audio, and every one of the quoted executives and employees in your story. You had them all. What’s the truth here?”

Farrow referred Tapper to his interview with Maddow the night before – where he said he had, “an explosively reportable piece” and that The New Yorker realized that immediately – and instead talked about focusing on the women.





“Look, Jake, you understand this, these are human rights abuses, as you said," Farrow replied. "These are women coming forward with a very, very hard set of stories and I really want the focus to be on them and what they did and continuing their fight."

“I truly do think it’s very important for us to stay focused on the women here,” he added.

An NBC spokesperson who spoke to the Beast on condition of anonymity said the allegations are “absolutely false.”

“There’s no truth to that all,” the spokesperson said. “There is no chance, in no version of the world, that Susan Weiner would tell Ronan Farrow what he could or could not report on.”
