View Full Version : What pisses you off about the NFL?

It seems like the NFL is getting progressively worse every year, for a myriad of reasons. I'm not talking about the publicity stunts during the anthem, because if you have NFL Redzone you never have to watch that contrived bullshit in the first place. I'm talking about the product on the field, and here are a few things that have really turned people away (imo)...feel free to add any:
1. Penalties. It's almost as if the refs have egos now, in that they assert their will on every game. There are far too many ticky-tack penalties in key situations, especially holding calls (O & D) and the horribly misused "illegal contact" penalty. It won't end up being a big story because Philly won, but last night's game was an example of a one-sided officiating disaster.
...and what's the point of KR/PR anymore? I don't know the statistics but it "feels" like there's a flag on 70-75% of all returns...completely sucks the excitement out of those plays.
2. Wide receivers/TE's/etc can't catch. I feel like there's been more drops than I could ever remember. You have ONE JOB, catch the fucking ball.
3. Poor tackling...to be fair this isn't new, tackling technique has been declining for almost 30 years now. It still pisses me off when watching a little RB break a big play cause the dipshit defender goes for the big hit instead of wrapping up.
4. Piss-poor QB play. Outside of Rodgers, Brady, and Brees (2 of which could retire at any time), there are no sure things. Every other QB has bouts of wild inconsistency. There's hope with upstarts like Wentz, Watson, Carr, Mariota, Dak...but time will tell. More duds than studs at this position.

The AFC is boring as fuck and has been since 2003. The Patriots and Steelers both need a nice long 30+ year period of suckage.
The league and casual fans keep trying to shove gimmick QBs down our throat even though they keep getting exposed once defenses have enough tape on them.

Penalties for sure. And the NFL constantly adjusting rules regarding celebrations of any sort. As long as it doesn't delay the game, who cares.

Agreed on all of OPs points. Also:
1. Monday Night Football has gone to shit for about a decade now. MNF used to be the biggest game of the week, pitting the best matchup of the week. Now, it's usually 1 good team vs. 1 putrid team. Sometimes, it's even 2 bad teams. Rarely is it 2 of the elite teams matching up against each other. Also, the Sunday night FLEX scheduling needs to start earlier. No one wants to watch an 0-5 Giants team with all of their WRs injured play in primetime this weekend.
2. The instant replay system. Why does the ref have to go look at the replay and make a decision on whether him or a crew member got a call wrong? These refs have egos, and they aren't going to admit that they made a mistake unless it's obvious. Let an official in the press box control the replay decision. That's what College Football does. It's quicker and they get the call right more often because the ref on the field doesn't have to swallow his pride.
3. Overtime rules. So dumb. So if you lose the coin toss, and the other team scores a TD, they win. But if they only score a FG, the game continues. LOL. Let both teams get the ball, maybe at midfield (not the 25 yard line like in college). Play it out like they do in college after that. And ties should not exist. This isn't povertyball.
4. Homefield in the playoffs needs to be addressed. Why should a shitty division winner with a 9-7 record get home field advantage over a strong 12-4 Wild Card team? I'll admit that I'm still salty about that 7-9 Seahawks team getting to play at home in freezing weather against the 11-5 Saints and pulling off the upset. No way the Saints lose in the comfort of the dome.

Well winning your division should get you in the playoffs. But if your division is shitty then why get rewarded with a home game vs. a wild card team with a better record?

Players worrying about their fantasy numbers instead of the team. Refs orchestrating the game. Late flags because of the crowd reaction. Holding should be eliminated, it's a dumb penalty. I also liked it better when we weren't concerned with who the players were fucking during the off-season.

Yeah i hate when people say that the league is making a ton of money under his watch. The product on the field has been so good that it was gonna be profitable no matter who was in charge. I think the NFL makes money in spite of him, not because of him. Hopefully JJ and Kraft can get that fuckbag ousted.

Same with basketball too when you have genetic freaks like Dwight Howard who can't even develop proper fundamentals/consistent free throws after 10 years in the NBA. I don't know if the NFL has always had guys dropping routine catches like this, but yeah it's pretty bad. Most of the time they just jog back to the huddle like nothing's wrong.
In general, the stupid plays have always pissed me off (running backwards after the catch when all you need is two yards for the first down, taunting penalties that cost your team 15 yards, front flips into the endzone, etc) but I guess that will never change when the majority of the players have IQs under 90

It’s the youtube/espn mentality of this crop of receivers. You can’t just catch a 10 yd slant and go down. You have to catch it one-handed, hurdle two defenders, and break it for an 80 yd run. They don’t bother to remember that step one is to fucking catch it. That’s another reason why untalented guys like Welker and Beasley can have productive careers, simply because they’re the few guys left who aren’t trying to make a Youtube Highlight Mix every time the ball comes their way.

I don't understand why the owners are OK with him going on vendettas against players like Brady, Peterson and Zeke knowing it'll result in a court battle. It doesn't make the NFL any more money, all it does is make a lockout more likely during the next CBA negotiation.

I must counterpoint:
1)The have to call penalties, cause if not you'll have everybody be the seahawks and just foul all the time like they do at home
2)Blame the shit/inconsistent qbs, brady/brees/rodgers' receivers can catch just fine, but when a wr doesn't know if he has to do a handstand to catch a pass because it was put on the wrong side of their body or behind them or 3 yards in front of them they're going to make mistakes.
3)Blame the concussions, and guys going for strips, but yeah this one is the easiest fix.

Homer Jones was a 9.4 sprinter at Texas Southern back in the 60's, he was one of the few to beat Bob Hayes, he did that at an NAIA meet at 200m. He was the first player to run a kickoff back to score on MNF. And.......the guy who started it all, yep.....the daddy of ...THE SPIKE. He was a WR for the Giants and the Browns.

Yep, there are millions of other similar stupid plays that are annoying but taunting penalties would be the most intolerable for me as a head coach. There's just zero reason for it if you're a disciplined team. I'd bench the player for atleast a quarter and I bet you Belichick does something like that. Or fine them.

I can understand somebody new to the sport being turned off with todays game. But all us long time fans will never NEVER NEVER miss a game if possible.
I have missed......0....games I could have seen on TV this season. That has been going on for a long long time.
BUT.............if a rival league did show up, and they made it real clear they weren't concerned with safety, ya got one replay per half per team. One foot ln bounds for a reception, no FG's ouside the 20, all conversions two point plays. The NFL would be in trouble.
I played in some HS alumni games. So we all had to sign a form releashing the school of any obligations, it was all on us. That's all it takes. Ya wanna play a dangerous game, ok, if not......don't.
Not concerned about Willie smacking his hoe around, not the leagues problem.
Changed my mind.....no replays at all. If a mistake is made, oh well. And.....no phones on the sidelines, the QB calls the plays as does your defense QB. And....holding will be allowed as long as ya don't grab and throw someone down.
Avante
12-05-2017, 02:46 AM

Yeah...exactly. 3rd and 1 and some RB gets a yard in a half. Then he has to get in a clear spot and indicate 1st down for everyone.
And more irritating...
A cornerback gets beat but either the QB overthrows or the WR drops the ball. So then the CB has to celebrate and beat on his chest.
I can't remember where the line came from but it was a coach somewhere that said, "act like you've been there before".

Sudden death overtime only makes sense in sports in which scoring is inherently rare and anemic, like soccer.
For football, especially in the playoffs, there should be no sudden death. Even the worse teams in the NFL are going to score 14-20 points most games. And in the playoffs, those bad offensive teams won’t generally be there. It doesn’t take much to score a FG. No sudden death. No first touchdown wins. Just add another timed extra period and play until 0:00. Don’t want to make it a full 15, fine. Make it 10 minutes. But sudden death doesn’t make sense in a sport where scoring is not rare or difficult.

The OT rule is stupid though, no one would complain about it being unfair if both teams get the chance to score, and you shouldn't get that much of an advantage from winning a coin flip.
The college rules would be stupid because they remove any need to have disciplined special teams and make it so teams don't need to sustain a 70+ yard drive, but I think modifying the rules to make it so each team gets the ball makes sense.
Will Hunting

I still think the Patriots win in overtime either way though. The Chiefs D had been on the field for 40 minutes in regulation and was exhausted, the Patriots would have been able to score touchdowns at will, and Flores would have been able to pull a redzone stop out of his ass with a timely blitz that led to Mahomes being sacked.

NFL's OT rules have never been ideal, but i think it's been fine since they did away with the first drive field goal stuff.
we've seen teams elect to kick in OT instead of receive... it's happened 11 times in league history (and most of those happened BEFORE they took away the opening possession field goal bullshit) and the team electing to kick has won 6 of those 11

As someone suggested, maybe just having an exrra 10 or 15 minute period added would be better, but the current OT rule isnt that bad or controversial IMO
spurraider21
01-21-2019, 03:39 PM
just adding an extra period wont solve the problem. the team winning the flip still has the decided advantage. they either have more possessions or equal possessions. the patriots first drive of yesterday's game lasted for 8 minutes and ended in a touchdown. what if they just repeated that in overtime, and instead of scoring a TD, took 3 extra kneel-downs to kill clock and kick a field goal?
the coinflip at the start of the game matters less because one team starts each half with possession anyway.
the only way to actually balance is to go with a college style format. or you could get even more gimmicky and say there are no kicks allowed (no field goals or punts)
HarlemHeat37
01-21-2019, 03:50 PM
I don't know what the solution is and the current format is much better than the old rules, but I'd still like to see a change..yesterday would have been more fun if Mahomes had a chance, could have made a great game even better..
Something like Rodgers vs. the Cardinals is annoying, for instance..people like seeing great QBs with the game on the line, not a defense blowing it..even better in yesterday's case, where you would have had Brady and Mahomes going back and forth until one of them made a mistake..
The problem is that you can't expect human beings to play football all night, they'll die:lol

No, definitely not, but I also never thought it was the horribly unfair system that people started making it out to be around 10:00 PM Sunday night. I just don’t want the college system in the pros, I think that’s a ridiculously gimmicky system. Maybe a system where both teams get a shot at the ball, and no kicking scores are allowed. Back when a FG could end the game in sudden death, yeah everyone complained, and that system lasted for decades. But after 2009 when they changed the rules, I heard almost no complaints until the Patriots started benefiting from it.

I like the NFL's OT rule ever since they got rid of kicking a FG to win on the first possession. No matter what whoever wins the coin toss gets a huge advantage unless the OT is just a second full game.

I’m with you on your last two sentences. Just make it an extra quarter or 10 minutes...if it’s still tied THEN go to sudden death (in the playoffs). You’re right in the fact that scoring is too frequent to do sudden death. I think the main argument is that the NFL game is too taxing, but plenty of OT’s go 10+ minutes as is.

Will Hunting
01-23-2019, 11:23 AM
Having an extra period would be fair, I’d just make it 15 minutes instead of 10. At only 10 minutes you’re more likely to have a scenario where one team gets 2 possession and another team only gets 1. If it’s still tied after that then I’d go to soccer style sudden death where each team gets 5 chances to score from the 5 yard line and whoever gets in the endzone the most wins.

Handcuffing themselves on plays like these is indeed pretty retarded, tbh. Just like when the NBA refs have to check whose ball it is and they see that they missed a blatant foul but can't do anything about it.

Not really taking sides here, but the difference is that in football a first down is a bigger deal than a completed pass in Soccer because it's harder to get those yards back if you're the other team. In Soccer, a 20 yard pass doesn't mean much because it can be canceled out a few seconds later when the other team steals it. So after awhile, Pablo and Juan just slapping the ball across the field feels boring because 90% of the time you'll just give it back to the other team without scoring
In football though, you have to go through the whole force the other team to punt, then march back down yourself cycle before you get to the same spot on the field going the other way.
