View Full Version : NBA: Is the mid-range game history?

All I see now is layups and floaters to the basket or a kick out 3. Noone shoots the 8-14 ft jump shot AT ALL anymore. Is this part of the game history? or will it eventually return to the game?

I used to hit the mid range shot all day, seems like its a lost shot in Todays NBA, Todays college to. :claw

I agree with these........everyone else floats the ball like DeJonte Murray or either shoots/dishes for a 3. I attend AAU games all the time and if its not a floater, its a damned 3 (shooting 20% from there doesnt matter). These kids cannot hit a mid range jumper to save their ass. Is this part of the game history? :smchode:

Kyrie drives to the bucket or shoots 3's. He does not shoot mid-range.

yes he does not as much as the others for sure and i debated his inclusion ...but seen him more this year he has full arsenal but not as frequent as those listed
and i know he is tosb but wade still a mid range beast when hot.
And Tatum shown some nice mid range but i think analytics push will move him further out

Got it. I think Lonzo should start "smaller". Try to hit some closer jumpers before living at the 3pt line. He may move up to 33% shooting. :lmao

These things are cyclical. Defenses will find better ways to shut down modern offenses, then somebody out there will figure out they can use all that uncontested floor space to score from mid-range, or some team will dominate in the post again, teams will copycat, and then there will be threads lamenting how fewer 3’s are being shot.

Yeah...it'll get to a point where nobody bothers defending the midrange anymore, and somebody will realize, "hey, maybe we should take these wide open shots from in between." :lol

It's pretty well history atm, as people keep saying, it's not 50% harder to shoot a 3, but you get 50% more

when the league will realize the game is even too boring for casuals (aka when the casuals educate themselves minimally) we'll see a cleanup of defensive laws and the midrange will make a big comeback. The NBA has managed to partially destroy the game to please the casual fan, greedy assholes :depressed

Contact in the lane even on midrange jumpers takes too many players out for a 33% less reward vs risk result.

There are very few guys in the world who can play at Lebron's pace and still remain healthy. Everyone else has similar results to those three above, but the 3pt shooters who avoid contact most of the time seem to stay in the game a lot more.

Each of those 3 Spurs players have more injuries than Steph and Klay combined.

This is discounting that Pop may have bullshitted some of those for rest purposes.

I notice this mentality has spread to the gym even. Much more threes. It's a boring way to play.

Dude, tell me about it...randoms will just ignore me wide open in the post so they can jack a 3 like Curry or bulldoze to the paint like Lebron (and usually fail).

Midrange won't go away completely but certainly has been devalued. But there is still value based on defenses giving teams those areas to get good looks. Because of the three point shot becoming so prevalent, we're seeing more and more 4 guard/wing line-ups where all four guys can switch everything and recover more quickly on close outs and rotations. Then the fifth guy is the help defending shotblocker. That leaves midrange areas open for quality looks. Close out runs at you hard, pump fake, take a step in and shoot the midrange. Rotation is sprinting at you running you off the three point line, drive right past him for the runner/floater before the shotblocker gets to you. The midrange game is more about runners and floaters now. It's a very difficult shot to defend so if you're good at it, it's a weapon.

There's still a place in the game for the midrange. And maybe more players who are simply not good three point shooters will go back to it more. Lord knows there are plenty of players who should.
