After blowing up to 230 pounds in early 2017, now 199.

Want to keep it going.
Recovering from Frozen Shoulder, so have not added weight lifting to upper body yet.
Fat %, need to know which device or method is accurate. I just learned a lot of the devices are not accurate at all.

How are y'all doing?

There are 30-40$ scales which tell you your body fat% water % bone % weight at walmart and stuff.

Researched it bro, they are inaccurate.
Usually take fat reading from legs only.

They seemed fine to me. You can always get the hand readers that they use at gyms.

Like I've said though, I've never had my body fat percentage move more than a few tenths of a percentage after any use. They were reliable for me. I have one.

Still staring down that 400 lb bench goal. Had a slight setback and now I'm ready to get back to the 5x5's again. Did a lot of isolated tricep work over the past few weeks and it seems to have helped. Got under 315 and knocked out a few reps with no problem.

Started lifting weights at 15 for football (pushups, pullups, situps around 10) been at it ever since. There is no ...whatcha going to do in 2018?

Key word.....routine. I lift mon-fri, take the weekend off. The workouts are basic progressive training. Three sets, 12-10-8 reps for six months, then add weight. Didn't get into the cardio until about 10 years ago, here it's running in place, jumping jacks, skip rope. The whole...routine..takes about an hour.

Don't get too wrapped up in the diet, not training for Mr.Olympia. I do go with only eat when starving (once I get hungry go an hour). Yes we have no set meal times. Don't concern myself with what to eat. Only drink bottle water***. ONE....large mug of coffee in the mornings. Never snack around mon-fri.

*** the hell with everything Sat/Sun, totally pig out, drink, whatever....works for me. Yep, part of the.....routine.

You every try mixing in lockouts? that really helps since its usually the second half of the lift that is weak point

Been doing floor dumbbells along with my tricep work to try to eliminate catch points. Bring the dumbbells down slow, touch elbows to the ground and explode through.

They wouldn't let us lift that early because they said it would stunt your growth. A certain coach doesn't show up to practice some days and everyone is in the weight room getting in reps :lol

My dad wouldn;'t let me lift weights at first. So I did TONS of pushups, lifted chairs (when he wasn't around). Then when I turned 15 he bought me a bench and a 120 pounds. Yep, off and running.

Zane was really impressive, might not have size but he was like a statue. When you go into bulky guys, hard to beat Flex Wheeler who managed not to get that pregnant stomach thing going.

I've put in 10 serious years into weightlifting. I'm happy where I am with strength, size, tone, etc - but you always gotta want more and I want to look like I'd be able to compete in a show, but I'll never dedicate myself to staying under 8% bodyfat.

I destroyed a large bag of Doritos and refries on New Years night. Otherwise I did remarkably well. Hard to believe I went from 199 to 197 over the holiday week but I kept up with the exercise routine and didn't go too AWOL on the diet.

thats impressive. i've been tryin my best to eat healthier since getting married... my breakfast tends to be steel cut oatmeal + banana, though sometimes i'll have cereal (honey cluster flavored Fiber One) instead of oatmeal if i want something lighter. i used to have cereal daily, and the sugary ones, so thats been a positive change.

ive also been forcing myself to have more salads/veggies than before, but mainly with dinner. my lunches have room for improvement (typically some kind of carb with chicken... usually veggie noodles instead of pasta though). occasional roasted veggies but haven't been having enough salad with lunch.

also could do better on fruit. outside of my morning banana, i basically have an apple every couple of days. problem is im generally not a fan of fruits outside of those, grapes, and watermelons (which arent ideal)

best thing i did was cut soda out of my regular diet a couple years ago. beyond that, there are a lot of small, easy changes people can make to their diets to get started (cutting creamer out of coffee and replace with skim milk... IF you find yourself having fast food, dont get cheese/sour cream on stuff)

I mostly eat lean proteins but the conventional wisdom about butter and red meat is a little confounded by other variables. Like people who eat red meat are more likely to smoke and drink and if they eat a lot of red meat its like hot dogs and sausages a lot of times so the calories add up. Plus they overeat. Nothing inherently unhealthy about red meat nor butter. Being overweight is unhealthy regardless of your diet. Even bacon (https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/is-bacon-bad-or-good#section4) and eggs (https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/why-are-eggs-good-for-you) have made comebacks. Only thing everyone agrees about is trans fats being bad. I do a thing called IIFYM (If if fits your macros) and when I was learning all this read a lot of this Alan Aragon guy.

Basically you determine your macronutrients like me its like 300 grams protein, 350-400 carbs and 100-150 fats (I'm 6'4 265 lbs plus exercise a lot so thats why its so high) Plus your fiber totals. And then it doesn't really matter what they actually are from a body composition perspective. Like A&W root beer carbs is no more likely to be turned into fat if you're not overeating than any other carb. That Aragon guy has argued this over and over with people and no one has any evidence to the contrary.

The micronutrients are different so soda is lacking here since they refine it and remove all the vitamins from it so I take either a good multivitamin or add vegetables to my diet which almost all have no calories and are loaded with nutrients. Like an entire head of cabbage is 200 calories so I make a pita wrap with half pound of grilled chicken breast, diced tomatoes (also like no calories), shredded cabbage and plenty of mayo and ranch dressing. Or I make a big chef salad with all kinds of diced vegetables and nuts plus grilled chicken, shredded cheese and top it with ranch dressing. The vegetables give me nutrients plus its real good tasting and Im not eating handfuls of pumpkin and chia seeds like some phaggot hamster in a cage. Another option is eat what you want that tastes good then buy the vitamins and such separate which is much more fun like get a good comprehensive multivitamin.

Jiu jitsu 3x per week, strength training 3x per week, and cardio 2x per week, still can't hit goal. I'm unwilling however to give up drinking on weekends. Don't know if that's the final push I need

My fitness goal is to reduce my blood pressure.

I'm actually in really good shape (6'1, 180lbs) and do pretty intense cardiovascular workouts three to four times per week. But I just got my blood pressure score for the first time in five years and I'm in the freaking hypertensive range. I don't overeat, but there's plenty bad food that I eat, so my diet is going to change, drastically. That's the goal for 2018: reduce the blood pressure to healthy range with the primary strategy being diet change.

Did you get bloodwork done? You can have primary hypertension (genetic) or secondary hypertension (caused by something else). In either case as a 6'1, 180lb, active person it's probably not something that just cleaning up your diet will fix because you shouldn't be hypertensive.

Agree here.
To the Doc.

I work out very hard maybe miss a day in a week. Eat well, run in road races, swim, bike, do sprint triathlons but could not lower cholesterol. A cocktail of a statin and Zetia and I'm really good. Lots of HDL, low LDL, low overall. Complete change. The doc eyeballed my serum and said it was crystal clear. Just started this. But it's now a lifelong deal. My first pills. I have a friend who does somewhat the same (on a tough but lesser scale) but with high BP. He is on medication. It works. You need to at least find out. It's actually sort of a downer because I thought I was fairly invincible due to really good conditioning, I was wrong. Doc also said I could be a little more flexible with the diet. Just keep the fiber up per usual. Colon cancer is a big killer.

A lot of people confuse physical fitness with health but it's just one component of good health along with things like diet and genetics. Genetics is king component, meaning it can over rule everything else. Most recent research is showing an individuals microbiome might be as important as genetics in determining overall health but it's still not well understood, very complex system.

Absolutely.^

The micro biome of the intestines is very critical. For healthy skin, you gotta have the right "floral" balance.
Biology is extraordinarily difficult because all of the variables.

NPR on Fridays at 2 can lead you (us) to some fantastic stuff. That is an incredibly good program. If Ira Flato goes down because of some diddling with the female staff it will kill me before anything else.

Genetics and cellular biology is just absolutely exploding.

And even more importantly to your point, you gotta have a feel for how we work because in today's health care it is incumbent upon the patient to be proactive.

Yeah go get checked by a doc after you get your results from the insurance company. You could also swing by cvs/walgreens/heb clinics and just ask them to check your BP. Could have been something as simple as miscalibrated pressure gauge/monitor, too small a cuff will give false high readings, etc.

Good fats have just as many calories per gram as bad fats. Both have long hydrocarbon chains "tails" that are energy rich. It's the arrangement of the hydrocarbon tails that can make them "sticky" which is, overall, not a good thing. It also appears that taking in refined carbohydrates (sugars) with them has an interplay biochemically into how they are processed. The aforementioned is fairly up to date. But this will change with new research that is very frustrating for some people as the press tend to pick and choose which studies to accentuate.

Summary: fats are great at making you fat. But they can also be important in suppressing hunger for processed sugar intake. Which is very easy to overdo, and will also make you fat if you store too much of it. (Even with a little more than 1/2 the energy per gram, sugar will be stored as glycogen first and if those stores are full, fat.) In many food rich country peeps don't excercise enough to lower glycogen stores, so the carbs "become" fat. Basically.

In would not trust most chiros talking Biochem.

So therefore proper fats can help a person lose weight.
If eating the proper fats helps kill the desirefor processed sugan and/or to down a bag of Doritos, then viola.

For most people.
Another part of the problem, we process stuff differently. Nordic folks and American Indians evolved very different diets. Hispanics have a lot of trouble with the sugar fat combo. Others, not so much. It's biochemical, which is why I would advocate for panels (chemistry tests) which tell people what they are allergic to, what drugs for anesthesia would be an addictive problem, and what kind of diet is best for an individual. This is on the way, but not nearly fast enough. We are not all exactly the same.

Stay safe:

High fiber
Protein
Good fat

also, as an aside...

I drink lots of water but still have a problem with sodas. I have been to Michigan where they call it "pop". They put more of a twang on it though, so it sounds more like "paaaaap" :lol

Legs have been doing squats without weights, one legged genuflection type bends etc for 6 months now. Noticeable gains in strength and toning. Mrs. Fabbs tingles when squeezing my glutes.
Arms had just reached point to where rotator/shoulder injury seemed to be healed so began butterfly type lifts with 8 pound weights just for starters. Somehow reaggrivated shoulder/rotator (not during these butterflys). I'm wondering if it happened during Planks which I also just started. Specifically side planks. No pain during planks but timing coincides with shoulder-arm oowie.

Anyhow shoulder is somewhat better this week.
All along have been doing the Tom House MLB pitching trainer exercises.

Lifting is really not gonna get rid of a lot of fat, it's just gonna hide it with muscle. You have to get your heart rate up consistently for 45 min straight every other day eventually (warm up and cooling down not added in) Only way to do this is use the biggest muscles in your body, the legs. The activity getting all of these large muscles involved for the longest period of time without making them go anaerobic is quite simply a running program. It's hell on your knees if you are too big though. It's not good for big skeletons. Nothing cuts the fat better than running other than cross country skiing. Add that to weights and you will see the muscles even better as the fat layer in the skin going away can't hide the muscles. If shape is simply being able to lift a ton of weight, you lift. If shape is being able to lift a lot of weight many times, you lift. If shape is looking like a magazine Schwarzenegger, lift for specific muscle groups. But lifting gets you anaerobic very quickly. You can't keep the heart rate up easily and stay aerobic like you can with a running program. Changing stations in the weight room... It's not gonna do what running can.

So what is Mrs. Fabbs after... ? The big thick hard Fabbs, the lean durable Fabbs, we just don't know...

Warning Fabbs all of the above can injure you. Changing shoes out, running on softer surfaces, losing enough weight to actually even begin running without hurting yourself, walking... It takes time. Not running on a tread mill exclusively to get into awkward bad habits (the balancing required in running winding soft trails and paths is absolutely a wonderful extra)

I didn't say that the whole chart wasn't hard. I said the basic plank is dumb. Its pretty much a resting position. I literally use it to rest inbetween different ab exercises when I need to. Honestly the "elbow plank" as they call it is more my rest position than anything.

Some that will help you lean out, some help with definition, some with size etc. Just depends tbh. Whey is pretty versatile imo. Whey Gold Standard is my preference.

Avante does that a couple of times a day.

I keep it fast and simple anymore. At this stage of the game it's all about maintaining and sustaining what took years to build. I haven't worked out since I 've been gone, simply too busy or tired. And nothing to workout with being away from home.

Will start back up Monday.

It's not about how much weight ya can toss around, that is for kids. What is really going on his progressive weight additions and the sets and reps. AND....doing it. I will pay the price for missing time.

I can get in and out in about 30 minutes.

I do get a kick out of posters who...I lifted a VW today, three times.

And it should never be .....my goals for 2018. You make a life commitment to staying fit, it becomes who you are. Not a yearly thing.

Obviuosly an athlete will have different goals from a yearly perspective due to age and whatever the performance schedule looks like.

I was talking Joe Public, just those in the work world trying to stay fit. It's not really about this year, that year, it's more about a constant. What works for me,

First off I left a gym to work out at home. It's faster and I stay more focused. Too much standing around, visiting around at a gym. I want to get in. get it done and get out.

I work upper body Sun, Tues, Thurs, lower body Mon, Wed, Fri. I take off Sat.

Just your basic three sets of 10/8/6 adding weight every six months. Nothing exotic just the bench, curls, shrugs, dead lift, overhead, squats, calf curls. leg raises., etc.

As ya get older, ya realize cardio conditioning is becoming more an more important. I run in place with some music or speed walk or jumping jacks. I go until fatique takes over,

Bottom line is...

Never ever ever miss a workout. Only a death in the family/an act of God is more important. You MUST have that attitude. This isn't something you play around with, this is who you are, And it's real important everyone in your orbit knows this, they get where you;re at. You will need them buying into it.

The most important, sexy....muscles? Abs, nothing sucks more than a fat gut and nothing more attractive than washboard abs. And the legs, never want to lose that spring. And a nice tight ass....doesn't hurt.;)

Attibuted to? Your diet, exercise or both?

Dec and 1st half of Jan I fell down too.
Had a high blood sugar reading. So I looked at the Glycemic Index and GLoad charts. Got back on good stuff and already feeling better and dropped back to 198. My ideal playing weight should be 193.

Finally started putting on natural weight the last few years as metabolism has slowed down. Has actually been great for lifting. Sitting at around 155-160 right now. Want to hit bench goal of 300+ this year, did 275 for 4 reps the other day. So 300+ should be close. Might be able to hit it if I max out sometime. Would like to hit around 170 pounds by end of year as well.
