SA is the second safest of the ten biggest cities in America, second to San Diego. Maybe having a Seaworld just makes people less violent. My shithole of a city? Twice as violent per 100,000. I blame it on the underachievement of Yao Ming.

The safest big U.S. cities in 2004
Crime is dropping in most urban areas thoughout the nation.
October 17, 2005: 11:30 AM EDT
By Les Christie, CNN/Money staff writer

NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - Crime continues to fall in the United States, according to the latest FBI statistics.

Violent crime, which includes murder, forcible rape, robbery and assault, inched down at a rate of 2.2 percent in 2004 and the property crime rate fell by 2.1 percent.

The decline was led by major cities; those with populations greater than one million recorded a 5.4 percent drop in the rate of violent crime. Cities with populations between 500,000 and one million had a decline of 3.4 percent.

The Northeast compiled a 2.6 percent drop in the rate of violent crime, which led all regions. Crime in the West fell 2.0 percent, in the Midwest 1.5 percent, and in the South 1.2 percent.

Ten biggest cities
New York City continued to be one of the leaders in crime reduction. Violent crime incidents fell 6.3 percent there in 2004, including a drop in murders to 570 from 597 (4.5 percent).

The rate fell even faster in Los Angeles, which had 42,786 crimes of violence in 2004, down 12.4 percent from a year earlier. Still, despite having less than half of New York's population, LA recorded nearly as many violent crimes, including 518 murders, three more than in 2003.

San Diego, with only 6,774 in 2004, had the fewest violent crimes of any city with more than one million in population. Its rate of about 521 violent crimes per 100,000 population also topped the safe cities list. It was closely followed by San Antonio with 7,846 violent crimes and a rate of 654.

Detroit, with a violent crime rate of about 1,657 per 100,000, was the least safe of the top ten cities. It recorded 385 murders in 2004, 19 more than in 2003, and about 39 for each 100,000 residents. That was about eight times the rate of San Diego, which had only 62 homicides in 2004.

The FBI cautions against using these statistics to compare cities; results can be greatly affected by reporting errors or failure to report crimes at all. The Bureau's primary objective is to generate a reliable set of crime statistics for use in law enforcement administration, operation and management. The FBI does not rank cities itself; it merely provides alphabetical tabulations of crimes.

The rankings of the ten biggest U.S. cities
1) San Diego -- 524 violent crimes per 100,000 and a total of 6,774

2) San Antonio -- 654 --Total 7,846

3) Phoenix -- 676 -- Total 9,465

4) New York -- 687 -- Total 55,688

5) Los Angeles -- 1,126 -- Total 42,786

6) Houston -- 1,173 -- Total 23,427

7) Chicago -- 1,210* -- Total 35,106

*Chicago did not report forcible rape totals.

Oh come on. It's really an expression of disappointment in the shit play of the Texans.

Although being able to explain the level of vomit-inducing feeling of .04 to Astros fans this morning has been sort of fun. Suddenly I have many more people who understand . . .

Well compared to Houston, San Antonio might be a few degrees warm but doesn't have 175% humidity, so I'll take SA's heat over Houston's. And clooneychick hit another thing on the head. They have TC here but it's not like San Antonio where there's one on every street corner. Where I grew up I had three TC's that were within ten minutes of my house. Here there's only one, and the rest are at least twenty minutes away.

And I'll take the dust over the smog and swamp stink that pervades this city.

The humidity in Louisiana is just awful. It makes my hair frizz as soon as I step out the door. Just like Spurs_fan-I would much rather live with San Antonio's heat than have the humidity + the heat.

Good point. But I thought even just Dallas was bigger than SA. I guess I was wrong. Of course this list doesn't say whether it's based on population density or square miles.

I just looked here (http://www.citypopulation.de/USA.html) and for 2003 it has San Antonio and Dallas pretty much neck and neck. Looks like Detroit and San Jose made come-from-behind victories. I wouldn't think it would be square miles, because NYC isn't that large is it? Also, the 10 cities listed in this post were in the top 11 population wise on that site, so I imagine it is by population.

Dallas-Fort Worth is a metro area, well more a CMSA/PMSA.

San Antonio as of now is the 8th largest city passing Dallas last summer.

It's also been noted that San Antonio will soon pass San Diego for 7th largest city.

According to new data from the Census Bureau, San Antonio is poised to surpass San Diego as the nation's seventh largest city. San Antonio will slide into the seventh slot around 2010 if it continues to grow at the same rate it has since 2000. The city had the third-largest population increase in the nation from July 1, 2003, to July 1, 2004, adding 22,000 people. Just last year, Census numbers moved San Antonio from ninth to eighth on the list, bypassing Dallas for the first time.

Also, we're the third fasting growing city in the nation. Behind only Los Angeles and Las Vegas.

Cool, thanks! I went to the Census Bureau site and got confused. It's too late in the day for me to have to actually think to find something on that site.

Man, he just doesn't stop. City size means very little. SA's MSA is 40th in population in the US.

And to throw a bone to the San Antonihomers, SA is indeed a pleasant place to live.
