I was wondering if anyone knew the details of why the knicks still owe him 39.8 mil even though he is retiring. Searching around the net it said that they got him to agree to a medical retirement which effectively has insurance kick in and pay 75% of the remaining money. That only raises more questions for me, does that mean that he could have retired not citing medical reasons and they still would have owed that money without insurance. There has to be some protection for these teams with these contracts, so a player can not just sign a big deal and then quit and still get paid.

There are protections. It is a contract, and if someone signs it and does not fulfill his duties, then he is in breach of contract and could be forced to pay reperations to the team.
