Yea, the liberal establishment suddenly decided the alternative spelling was no longer valid because it would destroy their narrative / seminal moment about Dan Quayle being an idiot. I had multiple teachers teach me the alternative spelling. As well, I even watched at least one news report (IIRC more than one) in which the anchorman / journalist stated that Quayle was not wrong about the alternative spelling. Quayle did not misspell the word. He did choose the less popular spelling, but he was one hundred percent correct.
:lmao it was a liberal plot to change spelling of potatoe

The so called pomato or totato...
This is interesting in that both these plants are closely related. One puts most of its energy into the tuber, potato, and one puts a lot of energy into the fruit, tomato. You can even graft them together.
Next time you grow a potato plant, let it flower and fruit and boom, you will see tomatoes. Only they usually stay green and small. Or conversely, plant a tomato, pull it up and you will see very small tubers, potatoes, as apart of the stem/root system. It's pretty neat. The leaves of both plants smell and look very much alike. Only we have perfected varieties for growing large fruits, or large tubers now. Boots gets very upset when I get into genetics of food crops so I'll end it here as the excitement may be too much for the board.

Definition of meme
1 : an idea, behavior, style, or usage that spreads from person to person within a culture
Memes (discrete units of knowledge, gossip, jokes and so on) are to culture what genes are to life. Just as biological evolution is driven by the survival of the fittest genes in the gene pool, cultural evolution may be driven by the most successful memes. —Richard Dawkins
2 : an amusing or interesting item (such as a captioned picture or video) or genre of items that is spread widely online especially through social media
… the band encouraged fans to make memes to advertise the U.S. release of their EP … —William Gruger
The grumpy cat meme frowned its way onto the Internet in September 2012 and never turned its dissatisfied head back. Since then, the image of the cranky cat has grown more and more popular in direct proportion to appearing less and less impressed by fame. —Anastasia Thrift

Yup. And I'm not an etymologist, but my guess would be that potatoe was actually the original spelling and that it was then cut down to potato out of convenience. But the spelling was never considered incorrect at the time of Quayle's "gaffe." If anything this just makes liberals look bad for not caring that they tout ignorance as if it's truth.

Well, spelling is much different than pronunciation. My post was just a possible explanation of why it would be spelled like potatoe - not that that spelling is correct in current day English - maybe in old/middle English - not even that far back - maybe three hundred years ago?

But that's not what I said was fake. I said it was fake that so many try to pretend Quayle misspelled the word. That doesn't bother you? Cos at the end of the day it's just about getting hit point, not being fair minded. It sure bothers you.
I think his trying to throw the school under the bus for his fuckup probably makes him a bad person.
Either he was truly stupid or was too dependent on scripts to be respected. Take your pick.

Well, spelling is much different than pronunciation. My post was just a possible explanation of why it would be spelled like potatoe - not that that spelling is correct in current day English - maybe in old/middle English - not even that far back - maybe three hundred years ago.
Try the eighties. NYT used the spelling in a 1988 article.
And it was a good explanation, btw.

Potato - phonetically would be po as in pot, ta as in tap, to as in top.

He was the moderator. He was getting the kid to spell the word as written on the card. Having good intentions doesn't make one a bad person. Obviously, you're a steaming pile of shit (aka a bad person) in your own right though.

Careful Pavlov doesn't like intermingling spelling with grammar. He's a Purist.
According to my dad, English is very difficult to learn - unlike Chinese which doesn't have tenses, little grammar - but no alphabet, and those tones are the same to my tone-deaf ears. English: I read. I read (pronounced "red" as in the past). He can't tell the difference.
